A large delegation of the State's tourism fraternity has headed off to Dubai in yet another attempt to woo the Arab traveler. Goa's tourism industry has been trying for several years to attract Arab tourists but without any noticeable effect. The Arab market is considered one of the most lucrative in the world. (GT) SHOWERS OF BLESSING OVER GOA: Light showers in the city (Panaji) and at sporadic places in the State yesterday and on Tuesday gave a respite to people from the sweltering heat. Medium to heavy showers are expected to lash the State in the next 48 hours, in some isolated pockets. (GT) HEAVY RAINS LASH VASCO: Heavy downpour disrupted normal life in the port town of Vasco on Wednesday evening. Power supply was cut off for over six hours in and around the port town, as the Electricity department officials claimed that power had to be shut down as a precautionary measure due to uprooting of trees. (H) MINING TRUCK KILLS 6-YEAR-OLD: A speeding mining truck claimed the life of a six-year old child, Sagar Rathod, at Surla, Bicholim, yesterday evening. (GT) VIGYAN RAIL TO CHUG INTO GOA: 'Vigyan Rail', a 12-rake train exhibition of Science and Technology is likely to reach the Margao Railway station on 21 May. It will be open for public till 24 May. (GT) CENTRAL PANEL TO INSPECT WORKS: All eyes are now on the visit of the high-powered committee headed by Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ravi Shanker Prasad, who is arriving Goa on a two-day visit from 8 May to review the ongoing works of IFFI. The committee will inspect some of the sites where work is going on in full swing.Meanwhile, the proposed IFFI-related plans are kept open for public scrutiny at GSIDC's boardroom at EDC House in Panaji from today. The plans can be inspected on all working days between 10 am and 12 noon till 12 May 2004. (GT) ASSAGAO SACRISTAN TO BE FELICITATED: Archbishop-Patriarch Emeritus Raul Gonsalves will be the main celebrant at the concelebrated mass at St Cajetan Church in Assagao on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at 4.30 pm, on the occasion of the completion of 50 years of service as a sacristan by Assis Conceicao Fernandes. Following the church service, there will be function organised by the Assagao Parish to felicitate Fernandes for his long and meritorious service to the community. The parishioners have opened a Savings Bank Account No.2902 at Central Bank of India, Assagao branch, to collect contribution to offer a small purse to Fernandes. (GT) REBELLION OF THE AVC GAONCARS: Cuncolim, on the southern boundary of Salcete is the gateway to South Goa and was an important village of Salcete Mahal. In time, Cuncolim became the most important of the five villages, the other four being Veroda, Assolna, Ameblim and Velim-all situated south of the eastern tributary of the river Sal. Because of the protection of the tributary, Adil Shah's armies retreated to Cuncolim to replenish and to fight their last-ditch battle to retake Salcete. The agricultural prosperity of Cuncolim was due to permanent fresh water, which descended from Bali and flowed onwards to Ambelim, Velim and Assolna to join the main River Sal before disgorging in to the sea.
