Addressing a press conference yesterday after a marathon meeting of KAB members at Goa Marriott Resort, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Ravi Shankar Prasad said the KAB had decided to hold the IFFI in Goa, as scheduled earlier, after viewing the entire aspect of ongoing preparations and assurances given by different consultants as well as Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, in particular. (H) COISSORO OFFERS AID TO RESTORE ADIL SHAH PALACE: Had Jawaharlal Nehru waited a few more years Goa would have been "taken over" peacefully said Narana Sinai Coissoro, vice president of the Portuguese Parliament. Documents, pertaining to the Salazar regime, released under the 30-year-old rule, revealed correspondence that advised Nehru against military action in Goa. "The decision was taken by (defence minister) Krishna Menon as an election gimmick a few days before the elections in Maharashtra," Coissoro said. Everybody was surprised that a country built on the principles of non-violence, non-alignment and panchsheel would take such a drastic step." Coissoro was chatting with the media after inaugurating an exhibition of paintings by Harshada Sonak at the International Centre, Dona Paula, on May 9.Coissoro (72) is a native of Ponda, who immigrated to Portugal in 1950 to study at the University of Coimbra. He represents the constituency of Setubal, and has served in various high-ranking public service and academic positions in Portugal. (GT) LISBON GRAPPLING WITH FAKE PASSPORT PAPERS: Vice President of the Republic of Portugal Narana Coissoro said that there are 18,000 applications from Goa fro Portuguese passports lying "suspended" with the Portuguese government, all under investigation. Talking about the problems of forged documents vis a vis Portuguese passports, the vice president said that the government in Portugal verifies the applications sent by the consulate. He expressed the view that the church and politics should not mix. Throughout the Portuguese history, there was a "mixing" between the church and politics. "In a secular state or nation, it is a good idea not to mix up the sword with the cross," he said. (H) PORTUGAL PRESIDENT TO VISIT INDIA: The vice-president of the Portuguese Parliament, Prof Naraina Coissoro yesterday informed that the Indian government had invited the Portugal President, Mr Jorge Sampaio, to India, and he would visit India soon, with a visit to Goa included in the tour. (NT) CYCLONIC STORM LOOMS OVER ARABIAN SEA: The cyclonic storm over east central Arabian Sea now has moved in a north-westerly direction about 350 km west of Panaji in Goa, the Indian meteorological department said in Pune on May 90. It now lies centered within half a degree of latitude 15.0 degree north and longitude 70.5 degree east and the system is likely to intensify further moving slowly in the a north-northwesterly direction, the IMD said. Rainfall is likely to occur in Guajrat, Konkan and Goa and other places. (NT) MEETING TO ADDRESS THREAT TO WORLD'S OCEANS: The first South Asia regional meeting on ballast water control and management will be held at the National Institute of Oceanography (at Dona Paula) on May 13 and 14. The introduction of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens to new environments via ships' ballast water has been identified as one of the four greatest threats to the world's oceans. As such, the Maritime Organisation is working to address the ballast water vector through a number of initiatives. (NT) MAJOR FIRE AT MURPHY UNIT: A major fire broke out at SS Electronics, situated on the Borim-Shiroda road yesterday night. The unit was manufacturing spare parts for the Murphy brand of radios. The damage is estimated at over Rs.10 lakh. (GT) IMMOLATION BID FAILS: Geeta Krishna Shiolkar (22), a married woman and resident of Siolkarwada, Mulgaon, tried to immolate herself by dousing with kerosene. She has been admitted to GMC, Bambolim, with 35% burn injuries. The reason behind Geeta taking this extreme step is yet to be ascertained. It is understood that she was married to one Krishna from Mulgaon a year ago. (GT) IRON ORE SPILL WORRIES SANGUEM LOCALS: Residents of Sanguem and the nearby areas have demanded the immediate refurbishing of the entire seven-kilometer stretch from Curchorem to Sanguem which lies covered with iron ore spillage on account of the frequent movement of mining trucks in this area. Consequently, this whole stretch has turned into a potential hazard for two wheelers and pedestrians alike. (GT) NON-REIMBURSEMENT OF TICKET FARE: Noted filmstar Shabana Azmi, who is in Goa in connection with the International Film festival of India, was shocked to discover that her air fare to Goa had not been reimbursed for the third consecutive time. (NT) WAT(ER) LIFE: CRY CACRA FOR NOBODY CARES! For the last month or so residents of Cacra have to wait for hours at unearthly times of the day to fetch water from the community well. None in Cacra has got a water connection. The PWD tanker supply is irregular. Villagers do not possess vessels big enough to store the water. Hence the water is released in the main well of Cacra. And, Cacra is not located in any remote jungle of Goa. It's barely ten kilometers away from its capital Panjim, and about one-and-a-half kilometer from the Goa University guest house. (Bindiya Chari in Herald) VOTING AND THE FEAR FACTOR: As the counting day, May 13, approaches, there is some suspense in air.But more or less, the results would be on broadly predictable lines. Unfortunately it is likely to expose the unwanted communal divide in Goa among the electors. This would be clearly visible when the Catholic candidates would take lead in assembly segments dominated by the minorities and the Hindu BJP candidates in Hindu-dominated assembly constituencies. A few constituencies with cosmopolitan character may be exceptions. In the manual voting and counting systems.it was difficult to identify boothwise voting pattern. But with the introduction of EVMs (electronic voting machines).this procedure compromises the sanctity of the voting process because in a State with less than 60 per cent voting and an average booth size of less than a thousand, boothwise voting pattern gives a lot of clues to the candidate..This is potentially hazardous for the electors. It the winner identifies certain booths where the electors have rejected him then one could imagine the treatment which those electors would receive when any developmental plans are conceived. (Nandkumar Kamat in Glimpses-NT) TRACING THE ORIGIN OF GOAN MANGO: The earliest literary references to mangoes were made by the Chinese authors, Hsuen Tsang and Fa Hsien, while Persian literature called it "Ambag", as recorded by Iban Haukal. In 1653, Niccolau Mnucci was the first historian to give the names of some of the Goan varieties. He wrote, "As I have promised to speak of fruits of India, chiefly of the mango and jackfruit, I may mention that the best mangoes grow in the inland of Goa. They have special names." The first register of the varieties found in Goa was by Sam Paio in 1902 and later by Rego in 1974. There were evidently no established criteria for attributing the names, as they adopted surnames and the Christian names of saints and kings. They were also influenced by questions of size, flavour, scent and other qualities. (Fernando do Rego in NT) ONLINE ART AUCTION: An Indian auction house of art works has closed the first half of the 2004 auction season with a sale of almost Rs.7.2 crore (almost 1.7 million dollars) thus doing better business than established western art houses like Christies or Sothebys. The cover work for this sale's catalogue, a 1963 'Samurai' by FN Souza, sold for over Rs.61.4 lakh (almost 143,000 dollars), creating a new price benchmark for Souza's early works. Lot 43, a 1960s head, also by Souza, sold for just over Rs.32,5 lakh (over 75,000 dollars). Almost 150 active bidders from over 15 countries jumped into the unprecedented bidding frenzy. The next online sale will be in December 2004.
