GoaNOW Webzine at: http://www.goacom.com/goanow 58% POLLING IN STATE: Polling for the Panaji and Mormugao seats as part of the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections passed off peacefully with no major untoward incident while the voter turn-out touched a fairly good 59.29 per cent in North Goa and a modest 56.97 per cent in the south bringing the overall total to 58.13 per cent. The highest voter turn out was witnessed in Tivim with 65.24 per cent followed by Saligao with 64.34 per cent while the lowest was Poriem with 54.95 per cent and 56 percent in Mayem. (GT) POLLING PEACEFUL: The improved turnout gave a clear indication that cutting across religious lines, people came out in large numbers to cast their franchise. Even old people and women carrying small children queued up with enthusiasm despite the terrible heat. (H) TURNOUT HAS BJP, CONG GUESSING: The relatively high turn out of voters in the minority-dominated areas of Salcete has left the political players in both the camps guessing, but both the Congress and the BJP sounded optimistic that the high percentage will go in their respective favour. While the Congress candidate, Churchill Alemao, said he will win by a margin of 30,000 votes, his rival and BJP candidate, Ramakant Angle, expressed confidence of winning by 25,000-plus votes. Churchill said never in the past had he witnessed such a heavy turn out of voters in Salcete, adding that the verdict would go in favour of the Congress. (H) EXIT POLLS PREDICT HUNG PARLIAMENT: The 14th Lok Sabha elections may throw up a hung House with the ruling National Democratic Alliance struggling to reach the half-way mark, exit polls conducted by various television channels yesterday showed. (GT) MISSING NAMES: It's not a new story that on election day, several citizens were compelled to come back home without casting their votes. It happened to no less a person than the former Indian army chief, General Sunith Rodrigues. Gen Rodrigues, who carried his elector's photo-identity card, was shocked when he was blankly told that he couldn't vote by the staff at the polling station. His wife's name figured in the voters' list, his had been deleted. (H) SILENCE BEFALLS ONCE ROARING BENAULIM: When elections take place, Benaulim thunders, they say. But, Monday proved to be an exception with the changed political equation and the voters deciding to cast their vote silently. In fact, Benaulim segment-right from Benaulim, to Colva, Betalbatim and Majorda-one could hardly find anyone ready and willing to talk about today's polling. S GOA CANDIDATES' FATE: The winner will be known only on 13 May. However, it was very evident that the battle of ballots was between Congress and BJP. But it is difficult to predict the winner. It is a matter of time to positively state which factor, whether the circular by the Diocesan Centre urging to vote for a secular party or the chief minister's extensive campaign in the Salcete taluka wooing the minority community, has played a major role. (GT) STRUGGLING TO COPE UP WITH RISING TRAFFIC: Mapusa-Panjim National Highway No.17 has become the busiest road as this road serves the only vital link for the vehicles from North Goa entering the southern part of the State. (H) GOVT SERVANT HANGS TO DEATH: Das C Naik, an information officer in the Department of Information, committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence at Khadpabandh-Ponda. He was 51 and is survived by his wife and two daughters, a son, mother and three brothers. (H) TAXI DRIVER'S BODY RECOVERED: Mapusa police have recovered a body of one Anthony Mariano Rodrigues (45), a resident of Merces, at Mapusa on 26 April. The body bore marks of severe head injuries and the Mapusa police have registered a case of unnatural death while the body is sent for post mortem at the GMC, Bambolim. (GT) ONE SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES: Chindanappa Upar, a 60-year-old non-Goan labourer, died of injuries after he was hit by a good strain at the Curchorem railway station on Monday. A total of 40 participants from different countries took part in the contest. Parish Youth, Nuvem, got the better of Cuncolim Union by a solitary goal to enter the quarter-finals of the 3rd Seamen's soccer tournament at Majorda.
