But for several years, a small village has been bearing silently the stink and the polluting wastes flowing down the slope. Ensconced in the valley beyond the massive complex, life in the heart of this village sprawled on the Bambolim plateau is quiet and unhurried. But just scratch the surface and contaminated water spouts from the earth. (GT) TAXI DRIVER WAS MURDERED: COPS: Mapusa police have registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC following the post mortem report received in connection with the murder of Antonio Mariano Rodrigues (45), a taxi driver found murdered on Monday (April 26) at Mapusa Tar river. (GT ) "MILAGRES FEAST" IN MAPUSA: The feast of "Milagr Saibinn" (Our Lady of Miracles) was celebrated at the church of St Jerome in Mapusa on March 26. For the entire taluka of Mapusa, "Milgarichem Fest" is a major event. Not only the Catholics, but a large section of the Hindu community also visits the Mapusa church to pay homage to Our Lady. On the day following the feast, one sees long queues of Hindu devotees, particularly women with small children or with wax offerings, in thanksgiving for favours received or to make vows. This year, however, the "fest" lost a bit of the usual pomp, because most of the adults had to rush to the polling booth to exercise their franchise in the Parliamentary Poll held on the same day. Being a dry day with bars and alcoholic sale outlets closed due to the elections, the "kopachem" (drinks) that accompany Goan festivity lacked much of its usual punch. Even the large fair of furniture, toys and "kaddio-boddio-khajem" (traditional Goan sweets) that spreads along the sides of the two busy roads flanking the church, appeared a bit subdued this year. By the way, with the "khozne-gornal" (fireworks) being a thing of the past and the large, ceremonial processions toned down due to the burgeoning traffic on Goa's roads, the feasts have lost much of its erstwhile glamour. We greet Iona Gomes [EMAIL PROTECTED] and other Mhapxekars, though belatedly. (GoaNOW http://www.goacom.com/goanow) TO CONSIDER 4-LANE ROAD: A final decision on the approval to the four-lane road project, dredging of River Mandovi and a temporary auditorium at Campal would be taken by Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority later this week. After a meeting on Saturday, the panel headed by Chief Secretary DS Negi, as chairman, met again yesterday, but a discussion over the approval to the projects was not conclusive even after more than two hours. (GT) VOTING PERCENTAGE INCREASES IN BARDEZ: In the dance of democracy-Lok Sabha elections-enthusiasm among the voters was at its peak in the Bardez taluka. Comprising of six assembly constituencies: Tivim, Mapusa, Siolim, Calangute, Saligao and Aldona, the overall voting percentage increased by 15.40 as compared to the Parliamentary elections held in the year 1999. With a strength of 1,51,025 voters, a total of 91,683 voted taking the voting percentage to 60.70. Saligao constituency represented by Dr Wilfred de Souza, the Congress-NCP alliance candidate for this year's Lok Sabha elections, registered a maximum voter turnout of 64.34 per cent although it has the least number of voters among all the constituencies in this taluka. (Mohan Naik in GT) HIGH POLLING PUTS BJP IN A FIX: Just as high polling was a matter of concern for the BJP in South Goa and Salcete in particular, a similar situation stared at them in Bardez and Tiswadi talukas of North Goa, where an unprecedented higher turnout was witnessed. (H) I HAVE EDGE OVER MY RIVALS: WILLY: The Congress-NCP alliance candidate for North Goa, Dr Wilfred de Souza, said he was satisfied with the voter turnout in the Panaji Parliamentary Constituency and felt he held a slight edge over his rivals. (GT) CPI FLAYS GOVT OVER DAS NAIK'S DEATH: Expressing his shock over the untimely death of information officer, Das Naik, Communist Party of India Goa State Council Secretary Christopher Fonseca condemned the vindictive attitude of the government in drawing up schemes to forcibly evict certain officers in government service by forcing voluntary retirement, arbitrary transfers and suspension on them. (GT) IFFI IN GOA A POINTLESS EXPERIMENT: "STATESMAN": In its editorial 'Films on the beach: Goa proves a pointless experiment', the national daily "Statesman" stated that the query as to why Goa was selected as the permanent venue for the film festival entailing huge costs in new infrastructure with doubtful returns is a question only the ministry of information and broadcasting can answer. "The major film establishments within the country and producers abroad have not responded to the question with great enthusiasm. It is an obsession from which officials have no hope, the editorial adds. Admitting that Goa is known for its beaches and ethnic attractions and for producing famed footballers, the editorial, however, states that Goa cannot boast of a film culture worth talking of. (H) MAPUSA LAWYERS CONDEMN POLICE INACTION: The Mapusa Advocates Forum has condemned the lethargic attitude of the Panjim police and its sheer inaction in registering an offence against a KTC driver. The KTC driver has been accused of assaulting a young advocate from Mapusa, Chandan Chopdekar, following a freak mishap. (H) BODY FOUND: The Maina Curtorim police on Tuesday found the dead body of 60-year-old Caitan Rebello of Zorivaddo, in Davorlim. (NT) SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABILITY ON THE RISE AMONG CHILDREN: A two-year study-Paying Attention Learning--done by Sangath Society for Child Development and Family guidance has found that around 40 per cent of the kids in the study have specific learning disability problems. While this figures is definitely higher than that of earlier years, the increase could be attributed, at least in part, to increased awareness and correspondingly increased diagnosis. (H) ALL GOA MANGO SHOW: The Directorate of Agriculture will organise an "All Goa Mango Show" from 15 to 17 May, 2004, at Menezes Braganza hall, Panaji, Goa. The main objective of the exhibition is to bring the awareness among the unemployed youth, students, the farming community and the public in general, and to expose them to the latest development in the field of mango cultivation and also to bring competitiveness among farmers to increase production and productivity of the mango crop. In Curchorem, Maina Sports Club defeated Uguem Rising Club by a solitary goal to advance in the Holy Cross invitational soccer tournament. At Saligao, Young Boys of Tonca, Panjim, defeated Holiday Sports Club, Arpora, by a solitary goal to move into the semi-finals of the Kingfisher Champions Trophy.
