But the prompt arrival of Mapusa police averted a riot-like situation at the Asilo Hospital. According to information provided by Alex Fernandes, owner of Hotel MR International, located at Umtavaddo, Calangute, one Raghuvir Ganesh Naik (23), a resident of Moira worked as a receptionist. He suddenly took unconscious. The hotel owner immediately rushed him to Asilo for treatment where doctors on duty declared him brought dead on admission. (H) DEMAND TO CANCEL KBM POLLS: Sushant Kuncolienkar, one of the candidates contesting the elections of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal yesterday served legal notice to the KBM demanding that the entire elections slated today be cancelled and to conduct elections afresh. Sushant alleged that the returning officer had violated certain election procedures and the same was not as per the KBM rules and against the well settled principles of holding elections. (H) NRI GOANS TO COMPLAIN OF DUST POLLUTION: Residents from Sanguem, Curchorem and Sanvordem, currently working in the Gulf, have complained of the ever increasing menace of dust pollution and environment damage caused in the twin constituencies of Sanguem and Sanvordem. In a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, over 130 residents, reemployed in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar, state that pollution caused by iron ore trucks plying from Barazan, Bhati, Villian and Chiraband has made life miserable for people residing in Sanguem taluka. (H) WORKERS FACING BLEAK FUTURE: Rallies and pledges calling upon workers to put up a brave fight against injustice marked 'May Day' celebrations in the city of Ponda. Addressing workers, trade union leader Christopher Fonseca lambasted the government for indiscriminate selling of Public Sector Undertakings at throwaway prices to capitalists, which, he observed, has resulted in massive unemployment. "Fifty-five industries have closed won in Goa and are in the process of shifting to Himachal Pradesh for availing of the 25 per cent subsidy. Globalisation and liberalization has a cascading impact on many industries forcing them to pull down shutters thereby throwing thousands of workforce on the streets," he said. (WE-GT) MUSLIMS AWAITING PROPHET'S BIRTHDAY: As per the Islamic calendar, 12 Rabeel-Val is the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed and about 2 lakh Muslims all over Goa will commemorate this event on May 3. On this auspicious occasion, Muslims in the State will organise a procession, which begins at the local mosque of the village or city. Incidentally, even newborn babies and infants are made to appears in the procession for a short while, as parents believe that the act would shower blessings on their baby. At the end of the function, adults and children are given the traditional drink 'sharbat' and sweets 'mitta khana'. (H) KONKAN FRUIT FEST: The second annual 'Konkan Fruit Fest' will be inaugurated by Chief Secretary DS Negi on 07 May at 10.30 A.M. at Campal near the Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes garden At the fest organised by the Botanical Society of Goa along with the Corporation of the City of Panaji as the Festival Partners and participating agencies including Directorate of Agriculture, ICAR-Goa, University of Agricultural Sciences-Dharwad, RFRS-Vengurla, Ravi-Mangal Agro Pro-combine and others, a new focus this year will be jackfruit [kapo]. Banana [one 'hand' of about a dozen bananas per entry], Bullsheart & Soursop [single fruit], Sapota/Chickoo [six fruits] will also be projected. All fruits grown in the Konkan will be accepted for the competition and display. There will be on-the-spot competitions in fruit eating. Each contestant will have to bring one kilo or more of the fruit of the day [Friday -Mango, Saturday-Watermelon, Sunday- Papaya] and consume the maximum pulp in two minutes flat. A choice of fresh fruit platters, fruit shakes, fruit juices, mocktails, wines, syrups, jams, pickles and, of course, fresh fruits of different varieties will be made available to the visitors at reasonable prices. The visitor happened to be a four-feet-long crocodile. The crocodile, which was chasing a frog, strayed into Naik's house, located along the banks of the river Zuari. Neighbours rushed to the spot, but quickly turned into mute spectators as none had the courage to confront the menacing reptile, until Anil Vaikunth Naik (Sesa Goa) managed to tie the crocodile with a rope despite his suffering a bite on his hand. (H) BUYING FISH IN GOA & MUMBAI: My cousins, who visit Goa, often say it's simpler to eat fish at restaurants because it's more trouble to buy and cook at home. In Mumbai, the reverse is true.
