"domnic fernandes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> MONSERRATE HUMILIATED IN SA: The holiday of Town and Country Planning Minister Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate and his family turned into a nightmare, after a South African Airways official in South Africa allegedly accused them of buying their passports. Monserrate, his wife Jennifer, Sons Amit and Rohit and friend Anand Bose-A Vasco-based builder-allege they were rudely refused access to a flight to Kenya at Johannesburg International Airport on May 30. (H) DOM MORAES PASSES AWAY: Poet extraordinaire and literary giant Dom Moraes passed away in Mumbai on June 2 following a cardiac arrest. He was 66. Family sources said Moraes passed away in his sleep at his Bandra residence at about 3.30 pm. Born in Mumbai in 1938, he published his first book of poems, "A Beginning", while just nineteen. The book later won the Hawthornden prize. His cremation is scheduled for tomorrow at the Sewree crematorium. (H) GREENPEACE WANTS TO END "RIVER PRINCESS" SAGA: As the "River Princess" completes four years of being 'berthed' at Sinquerim, international environmental action group, Greenpeace, is preparing to throw its weight behind the movement to remove the stranded ship with minimum damaged to the surrounding environment. Speaking to GT via telephone from Bangalore, Greenpeace activist Ramapati Kumar said that the Indian chapter of the group was taking up the River Princess issue "on a priority basis".The River Princess ran aground off Sinquerim during cyclonic weather on 12 June 2004. (Reuven Proenca in GT) INLAND WATER ROUTES TO PRIVATE OPERATORS: The Minister for River Navigation and Inland Waterways, Mr Pandurang Madkaikar, said that the government would be allowing the private transport operators to operate along various inland river routes in the State. Mr Madkaikar said that the permission would be granted with the objective to reduce the traffic pressure on the limited roads, around Goa. There are large number of inland waterways in the State, like from Panaji to Cumbarjua (and Dona Paula to Mormugao Harbour), which could be adequately used by private transport operators for public transport system, he said. (H) PRINCE JACOB TAKES BOLD STEP: "Rupnnem", the latest tiatr from Prince Jacob will be released on 4 July at the Kala Academy, members of the Konkani fraternity announced at a media meet on June 2. Jacob said, "Rupnnem" is the Konkani adaptation of the Marathi natak 'Sahi re Sahi' written by playwright Kedar Shinde. "The purpose of this exercise is to expose tiatr audience to scripts from other languages and will also help to enrich our tiatr stage," he said. "Rupnnem" is the 36th production of Prince Jacob. (GT) KMPL CHIEF HELD: The Economic Offences Cell of the CID-crime branch arrested the chairman and managing director of Kalpavriksha Marketing Private Limited, Umesh Khade, for duping the Goan investors to the tune of Rs.347 lakh so far. According to sources in the EOC, around 2,500 Goan investors have lodged complaints against the firm. D'Souza, was strangulated to death at her house at Maikavaddo on June 2 night. She lived alone in the house. The police informed that the culprits entered the house by removing the roof tiles. After strangulating the woman using a rope, the culprits decamped with gold jewellery including two pairs of bangles, two pairs of finger rings and a chain. The victim's cousin, Filomena D'Souza, who resides at Valvaddo-Pilerne, lodged a police complaint and gave details of the missing jewellery. (NT) PRIEST HURT IN ACCIDENT: Fr PO Almeida, parish priest of St Alex Church, Calangute, was involved in a collision with a Scorpio four-wheeler at St Anthony's Chapel at Gauravaddo-Calangute while proceeding from Candolim to Calangute on his motorcycle. The priest has been admitted to the GMC for treatment. It was resolved that the future conventions will have the following guidelines: Need for Education to be discussed as it is important for today's progress in the world and East African Welfare fund to be started; Sports competitions to be contested by mixing Goan members rather than between regions or individual communities; To make conventions easier and more affordable for participants to attend, with host Goan families providing accommodation; To obtain funds from any available source and not just from Goan members. The album titled "60's and 70's Goan Boat Songs" is a compilation of 12 songs which include the Goan dekhni, mando, dulpods, Portuguese and English medleys. Mr Rodrigues will also release the collection in the Middle East and parts of Europe. He was the first person to start the concept of a one-man-band in Goa and has travelled to Singapore, Thailand, Dubai and parts of Europe performing solo as well as with international musicians.
