Panandaikar COMMITTED TO ABOLISH CONTRACT LABOUR SYSTEM: In a bid to encourage regular employment of persons and restrict contractual employment in the State, the government will move an amendment to the Contract Labour Act in the forthcoming session of Goa Legislative Assembly scheduled to begin in July 2004. This was announced by Labour Minister Dr Suresh Amonkar yesterday. (GT) COMPENSATION FOR NRIS: Compensation for the kin of Goans working abroad who die due to accidents while on duty? Following instructions from the government, the NRI Facilitation Centre is presently engaged in working out the modalities of such a scheme. "The Chief Minister has given the Centre a directive to work out a plan to compensate the next of kin of those who have had fatal accidents while on duty," says Chandrakant Keni of the NRI Facilitation Centre. This compensation is not to be confused with the Insurance scheme floated by the Centre, which besides non-fatal accidents, terrorist attacks, etc. (H) GRID FAILURE PLUNGES N GOA IN DARKNESS: The entire North Goa district plunged into darkness for nearly an hour with the disruption of power supply from the Maharasthra grid around 8 pm on June 4. During the last three days there has been a disruption of power supply on the Kolhapur-Colvale line and the officials at the State electricity department are trying to verify the exact reason behind the disruption. (NT) COLVA FIRE: Five business establishments, including a restaurant, a jewellery-cum-cloth shop and a ready-made garment shop, were gutted in a major fire at Colva in the wee hours of June 4. The total value of the property destroyed is being put at around Rs.19 lakh. (GT) CITY'S PARKING PROBLEM: Social scientists and other experts will be inducted into the panel of planners and architects under the banner of "Together for Panjim" to broad base people's involvement in the planning aspect of the city, according to Corporation of City of Panaji Commissioner, Sanjit Rodrigues. While replying to points raised by citizens at the 'Meet the Think-Tank' programme organised by CCP and Architects Initiative as part of Panaji Expo at Kala Academy yesterday, he admitted that the panel was dominated by architects. The interface generated a lively debate on the city 's parking problem and the likely increase in volume of traffic vis-à-vis the holding of the IFFI 2004. (GT) HERITAGE ISSUE KICKS UP DUST: The issue of heritage sparked off a bit of controversy at the interactive session with the Think Tank at Panjim Expo, where the panel was quizzed on why it was so important to preserve Portuguese heritage. Architect Raya Shankwalkar responded by saying that it was not only Portuguese heritage, but all heritage-pre-Portuguese as well as Portuguese that was being preserved. The Adil Shah Palace also was spoken about, where a member of the audience said that the importance of this palace was that it was the only building still habitable dating from its period. (H) MEET ON CHILD LABOUR: The National Co-ordination Committee Meet of the Campaign Against Child Labour will be held at Holiday Village, Betim, on 6th and 7th June. The meet is being hosted by the Child Rights Cell of the AITUC. (GT) SUPRIYA MURDER CASE: The police have filed a charge sheet against accused Dipesh Raikar, Rajeshree Tarikar and Evaristo Pereira for hatching a conspiracy and murdering 24-year-old bride-to-be Supriya Lotlikar, and for also destroying the evidence after committing the ghastly murder on 26 February. (GT) RANDHAWA TAKES CHARGE AS DIG: Mr Narinder Randhawa took charge as Deputy Inspector General of Police, Goa, on June 4. Mr Randhawa has held various posts in various places in North India. He was holding the post of additional commissioner of police, Delhi, at the time when terrorists attacked Parliament. (NT) CONCERN OVER SAFETY OF WOMEN: Bailancho Ekvott, a non-government organization committed to the cause of women, have addressed letters to the Chief Minister, the chief secretary and the director general of police for action into the spate of murders of women that have been reported this week. (GT) FISHING BAN: The State government has banned fishing by all kinds of mechanized vessels within the territorial waters of Goa from June 10 to August 15. The Coast Guard and naval authorities will patrol all the beaches especially Hollant, Chapora, Colva, Vasco, Baina, Calangute and Nerul and seize vessels violating the ban. (NT) RACHOL LOCAL REMANDED: One James Gomes, a resident of Rachol, was remanded to two days police custody in connection with a chain snatching incident that occurred at Dramapur recently. (H) TWO HOUSES DAMAGED: A branch of a banyan tree came crashing down on the house of Judas Silva near the Mahalaxmi temple at Benaulim, causing a loss of around Rs.50,000. Another tree fell on the terrace of one Dr George at Aquem in Margao. (H) CASHEW PLANTATION: The Department of Agriculture will distribute about two lakh cashew grafts this monsoon to cashew growers in the State and will bring about 1000 hectares of land under cashew cultivation. (GT) VENUS TRANSIT: The great even of Venus transit will take place on 8 June. This is a rare opportunity and will have to wait up to June 2012 to see it again. Goa Science Centre at Miramar, Panaji, has made elaborate arrangements to view the event through telescope projection and sun filters, etc. (GT) MAN DIES OF BURNS: Joao Coutinho of Margao set fire to himself in an attempt to commit suicide at his residence. He succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment at the GMC. (NT) FROM BAD TO WORSE: Why has safety in the State of Goa reached such deplorable levels? The issue is simple-over the past few years, with the budget on tourism having increased four times and with the increase in the number of tourists visiting the State on the rise, the accompanying number of people flocking to Goa to service this tourist industry is also on the rise. And that is adding to the crime wave which is gripping the State. But instead of regulating this flow the government is encouraging more and more people to come to the State without caring for the concerns of its citizens.
