SEX WORKERS TO BE DEPORTED BY OCT END: A delegation of BJP which met Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar over the rehabilitation of Baina commercial sex workers yesterday (June 12) was assured that the Ribandar site would only be a transit camp. North Goa Zilla Panchayat president Anil Hoble said that the chief minister had stated that women housed at Ribandar would be deported to their native land before October 2004 end. (WE-GT) SEX WORKERS THREATEN SUICIDE: In an unusual twist, a number of commercial sex workers and Gharwallis in Baina have threatened to lay down their lives in the red-light area, if any attempt is made to forcefully evict them from their present homes. Unhappy with the rehabilitation package which is expected to take shape on Sunday, the sex workers told Herald on Saturday that they feared that the government would look after them only for a short while. (H) SAHANI REFUSES AUDIENCE: The Governor Kidar Nath Sahani on Saturday (June 12) declined to meet a delegation of Ribandar residents, who had come to Raj Bhavan to oppose Goa Government's decision to shift the Baina-based sex workers to Ribandar as part of the rehabilitation plan. The delegation led by social-activist Adv Aires Rodrigues and accompanied by local MLA Victoria Fernandes and Municipal Corporation Domingos Pinto, was stopped by a strong police posse that barricaded the road to Raj Bhavan near NIO. (H) .AS STATE READY: Sunday may witness an upheaval in the state as the government machinery is kept in readiness to transport the commercial sex workers (CSWs) en masse from Baina to the old Bal Niketan at Ribandar. The government has fixed June 13 as the date to shift the CSWs from the red light area to Ribandar under police escort, despite major opposition from NGOs and some CSWs as well. (H) BUILDER COMMITS SUICIDE: Prominent builder and businessman Stalin Manuel D' Souza, allegedly committed suicide. The 51-year-old D'Souza, who was an outstanding athlete in his school and college days, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his office at Falcon apartments in Panjim city. (H) ALERT LIFE-GUARDS of Miramar Baywatch Association rescued a 22-year-old tourist from Bangalore when he was dragged into rough monsoon waters off Miramar beach yesterday evening. (WE-GT) IRREGULARITIES IN MPT'S TRAFFIC DEPT: A joint surprise raid by the vigilance department of the Mormugao Port Trust and the Central Bureau of Investigation on the office of the Assistant Traffic Manager (Commercial), has brought to light serious irregularities being committed in the traffic department of the MPT. According to sources, the joint raiding party found that there were more containers in the port yard than those shown in the records, which were seized by the party. The sources said that by manipulating the records the officials siphoned off the revenue of the port. (NT) TRAIN HALT AT KARMALI: The former Union Minister and the Member of Parliament from North Goa, Mr Shripad Naik, requested the Union Minister for Railways, Mr Laloo Prasad Yadav, to allow a halt for the trains bound to Goa or passing through the State, at the Karmali station. (NT) RESIDENTS OF RAWANFOND, Shantinagar and other neighbouring areas in Margao are up in arms protesting against the delay in completing work of the Rawanfond bridge. Yesterday was the third such time that local villagers, led by their MLA Luizinho Faleiro, gathered at the site highlighting their grievances. (WE-GT) OIL SPILL RESPONSE CENTRE: The State government through the department of Science, Technology and Environment is supplicating a proposal for setting up an Oil Spill Response Centre in Goa. (H) SEATS FOR LADIES: In order to avoid the problems faced by women passengers and senior citizens the State government has proposed to reserve front four seats for them in KTC as well as private buses/mini buses soon. It has been also decided to provide front side entry for women and senior citizens in the buses/mini buses and to introduce low-lying footsteps for the front entry of buses for the convenience of women and senior citizens. Several churches and chapels have been raised in the saint's honour, however, it is only in Siolim where one gets to see the statue of St Anthony, on the church frontispiece, with a serpent dangling on a rope in his right hand. Every year, on St John Baptist's feast day (24 June), the Siolim Sao Joao Traditional Boat Festival Committee organises a colourful boat parade which culminates near the St Anthony's church. From 2 pm on 24 June, packed with enthusiastic revelers, tastefully decorated boats will slowly glide down the rivulet to the beat of the Goan ghumott and kansallem. Goan folk music is wonderful. We tend to underestimate Goan music as not being up to the mark of say Mexican or Spanish. Why not? If they can do it, we can too.
