Jamir reaches Goa * Fishing ban not violated: Government. WOMEN'S POLICING: The State of Goa has finally decided to be fair to the fairer sex. The Director General of Police Amod Kanth has said that the Women's Police Station will soon be given a major facelift and will be expanded to serve as a crisis intervention centre both for children as well as women. However, it would continue to remain in the premises of the police headquarters, Panaji. (GT) RAPE GRAPH ZOOMS UP: The number of rape cases has reached a ten-year high in the year 2003 with 31 cases. In most of the cases, the accused is known or a close relative, boyfriend, neighbour, employer, colleague or doctor. (GT) BILL TO CHECK NOISE POLLUTION: The government on July 20 informed the court that in the next assembly session, a bill to control noise pollution in Goa would be presented, which would take into account the tourism aspects of this State. When the petition filed by the Goa Environment Federation challenging the violations in the Noise Rules came up in the court, the Under Secretary, Home, DS Chawan, in an affidavit stated that the government has decided to bring about an enactment, which will contain all the relevant provisions of the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules 2000 so that the authorities can do all that is required to make it as "perfect and suitable" for Goa to effectively control noise pollution. (H) POTENTIAL NAPHTA LEAK: The petroleum pipeline running across Vasco and Mormugao is the centre of a fresh controversy when it emerged that large section of it is being exposed to lashing waves of potentially corrosive seawater. (Reuven Proenca in GT) CORRECTIVE ACTION: Zuari Oil Tanking Limited Managing Director EP Esteves said that corrective action to re-bury its `multi-product` pipeline at Baina beach will be taken up n the coming weeks. (GT) NABBED FOR POSSESSING FAKE CDS: The Vasco town police arrested on Naresh Kukreja, of Sangli, for possessing 250 counterfeit CDS. (NT) TENANTED LAND WILL NOT BE CONVERTED: "Tenanted land will not be converted," said Minister for Town and Country Planning Atanasio Monserrate, while answering to the Opposition onslaught during Question Hour on July 20. The minister was severely criticised by Saligao KLA Dr Wilfred de Souza, who in his queries raised concerns over the fate of agricultural land in Goa. (H) GSIDC ISSUE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said he was ready to hold an inquiry either by the Comptroller Auditor General of India or by the Chartered Accountants Association into the allegations of flouting of tenders by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation. In the Goa Assembly, Parrikar dared Pernem MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu to accept the challenge stating that he was ready to resign if charges were proved by these agencies or else the MLA should quit. (GT) BAN ON SWIMMING: Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes drew the attention of the government over the increasing deaths of people, mostly tourists at the sea. He said while the government globally advertised about `365 Days of Tourism in Goa`, there would be 365 deaths in the state if beach safety is not streamlined. The MLA demanded a ban on swimming in the sea in the monsoon. (H) FARMERS THREATEN TO COMMIT SUICIDE: Agriculturists Joaquim Crasto and his joint family of 30 members along with Jose Sebastiao Crasto and all residents of Chovoth, Davondem, have threatened to commit suicide if their prime untenanted land admeasuring approximately 5,000 sq mts is not excluded from the proposed land acquisition for the proposed multi-purpose truck terminus planned by the State Urban Development Authority. (GT) DALGADO AKADEMI HAILS GOVT DECISION: Dalgado Konkani Akademi has expressed satisfaction over the unanimous resolution passed by the Goa Assembly, providing financial assistance for the development of Konkani in the Roman script. Akademi convenor Tomazinho Cardozo thanked Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for accepting the resolution, Saligao MLA Dr Wilfred de Souza for tabling the resolution and to all the members for supporting it. (GT) FAKE POLICE OFFICER: The CID/Crime branch police on July 19 arrested one Cedric Lawrence Fernandes, a resident of Menezes Bhat, Sao Jose de Areal, for posing as a police officer and cheating the public. Police said that Fernandes posed as a police officer and took money from a scrap dealer at Margao by threatening to arrest him. (GT) JAMIR RESIGNS FROM LEGISLATORSHIP: Goa Governor SC Jamir, who was elected from Aonglenden Assembly constituency of Mokokchung to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, has resigned from the seat. (GT) KAKODAR TO RECEIVE GUJAR MAL MODI AWARD: Atomic Energy Commission chairman Anil Kakodkar, who used nuclear technology to improve the life of the common man, has been chose for this year`s Gujjar Mal Modi Innovative Science and Technology Award. Previous winners include President AQPJ Abdul Kaam and space scientist Satish Dhawan. "Dr Kakodkar is an apt choice, while announcing the award because of his outstanding contribution to research and development of Indian nuclear power programme," said President of the Foundation Satish Kumar Modi. The award will be presented on August 9 at the India Habitat Centre.
