structure for private professional colleges, in keeping with the Supreme
Court directions given in the year 2003, at which time the prescribed Fees
Committee will be set up, say officials. (H)

MIGRANT LABOURERS SWEAT IT OUT: They form the backbone of the fishing
industry in Goa. A direct beneficiary of the "Susegad" attitude of Goans,
the migrant labourers employed on trawlers sweat it out in the absence of
any facilities to better their lot. The attitude of Goan employers toward
their employees in this field borders on indifference, to say the least.

RESOLVE TRAFFIC PROBLEMS: VELIM LOCALS: Agitated residents of Velim on
August 23 morning blocked the Betul-Margao road for well over three hours,
throwing vehicular traffic out of gear on the Betul-Velim route. They later
served a 15-day ultimatum on the authorities to resolve their traffic woes
or face daily protests. (H)

STORM BREWING AGAINST MOBILE TOWERS: Are more phone base station antennas
(towers) a health hazard to the neighbourhood? Whatever the claims and
counter claims, erection of cellular towers in residential localities,
especially on high rise buildings, is facing rough weather, so it seems. In
Salcete, it started with protests from residents of Navelim. Last week saw

of Maddel have come out openly against the proposed construction of a tower
in their neighbourhood. (H)

DEAD FISH AT HARVALEM WATERFALL: Harvalem waterfall is scenic during the
monsoon but the cascading waters have brought dead fish in the village.
Villagers suspect that a company upstream of the nullah may have released
chemicals, which seeped into the water and entered the stream, thereby
resulting in the mortality of the fish. Most of the fish found dead is the
sweet water variety including pittoll, thigur and other local varieties.

INCLUSION IN MPDA OPPOSED: The village panchayats of Cavelossim and Sao Jose

RE-LAUNCHING OF MID-DAY MEAL: The number of students seeking admission to
government schools in Mormugao taluka has been declining over the years.
These schools cater to the poorer sections of the society and a declining
admission rate is detrimental both to the future of these children and the
schools. Given the prevailing circumstances, re-launching the mid-day meal
scheme in these schools seems the only way to salvage the situation. (NT)

UMA TO HALT IN GOA: The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister, Ms Uma Bharti,

KLES TELE-MEDICINE LINKAGE: While Goa has yet to advance in the wonder world
of medical science and introduce super speciality services, the neighbouring
state's KLES-Belgaum is already working wonders for Goans who have been
thronging to this hospital during the last eight years. The hospital is
planning to introduce a bus service from Goa and better still it plans to
introduce tele-medicine linkage between its beneficiaries in Goa and the

lure tourists and foreigners. (H)

WHOM DO WE CATCH THIS TIME? No doubt the fishing ban was needed to conserve
depleting marine resources. However, this ban has become a contentious issue
between the western states of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka where the law
is observed more in breach than in practice. And today, the race is not on
who will get the best catch or who will bring in the tastiest species but
rather who can violate the ban at the earliest. (Edit in Herald)
