TRUCKERS' STIR CONTINUES: With the nationwide truckers' strike entering third day (August 23), the situation in the export-oriented industrial units in the State starting feeling the pinch as the goods could not be transported to the port. The president of the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Nitin Kunkolienkar, said things would become worse if the truckers' strike continues for few more days. (NT) VEGETABLE PRICE HIKE: With the truck operators on an indefinite nationwide strike, vegetable vendors in the State have already hiked the vegetable prices. (H) NEW FREE STRUCTURE: Academic year 2005-06 will finally see a clear-cut fee structure for private professional colleges, in keeping with the Supreme Court directions given in the year 2003, at which time the prescribed Fees Committee will be set up, say officials. (H) MIGRANT LABOURERS SWEAT IT OUT: They form the backbone of the fishing industry in Goa. A direct beneficiary of the "Susegad" attitude of Goans, the migrant labourers employed on trawlers sweat it out in the absence of any facilities to better their lot. The attitude of Goan employers toward their employees in this field borders on indifference, to say the least. (Joaquim Gracias in GT) RESOLVE TRAFFIC PROBLEMS: VELIM LOCALS: Agitated residents of Velim on August 23 morning blocked the Betul-Margao road for well over three hours, throwing vehicular traffic out of gear on the Betul-Velim route. They later served a 15-day ultimatum on the authorities to resolve their traffic woes or face daily protests. (H) STORM BREWING AGAINST MOBILE TOWERS: Are more phone base station antennas (towers) a health hazard to the neighbourhood? Whatever the claims and counter claims, erection of cellular towers in residential localities, especially on high rise buildings, is facing rough weather, so it seems.In Salcete, it started with protests from residents of Navelim. Last week saw hundreds of students coming on the roads in Cuncolim, protesting against the erection of a tower close to the school building. On Aug 23, the residents of Maddel have come out openly against the proposed construction of a tower in their neighbourhood. (H) BOOKED FOR SMOKING, SPITTING: The enforcement authorities in the State have booked 7538 cases under the Goa Prohibition of Smoking and Spitting Act, from September 2003 to June 2004. (GT) DEAD FISH AT HARVALEM WATERFALL: Harvalem waterfall is scenic during the monsoon but the cascading waters have brought dead fish in the village. Villagers suspect that a company upstream of the nullah may have released chemicals, which seeped into the water and entered the stream, thereby resulting in the mortality of the fish. Most of the fish found dead is the sweet water variety including pittoll, thigur and other local varieties. (GT) INCLUSION IN MPDA OPPOSED: The village panchayats of Cavelossim and Sao Jose de Areal on August 22 joined the chorus of opposition against the government move to include 18 Salcete villages in the newly-constituted Margao Planning and Development Authority. (H) RE-LAUNCHING OF MID-DAY MEAL: The number of students seeking admission to government schools in Mormugao taluka has been declining over the years. These schools cater to the poorer sections of the society and a declining admission rate is detrimental both to the future of these children and the schools. Given the prevailing circumstances, re-launching the mid-day meal scheme in these schools seems the only way to salvage the situation. (NT) UMA TO HALT IN GOA: The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister, Ms Uma Bharti, will make a transit halt at Vasco da Gama railway station on August 24 on her way to Hubli and the state BJP unit has decided to give a rousing welcome. (NT) CAMPAIGN AGAINST WIFE-BEATING: Over a hundred women gathered at Oxel in Siolim on August 22 to discuss strategies to stop wife-beating in villages. The meeting was convened after a mass door-to-door mobilisation of women as part of the campaign to stop wife beating in Goa. The women vowed to stop this crime in their village. The campaign was announced on March 8, when the International Women's Day was kick-started in Siolim by Bailancho Saad in order to seek community participation. (NT) US NAVAL SHIP COMING: The United States Naval sixth Pathfinder T-AGS 60 class ship USNS Mary Sears - the first US naval ship to be named after a woman - will drop its anchor at Mormugao Harbour on August 25 on a short recreation tour. (H) KLES TELE-MEDICINE LINKAGE: While Goa has yet to advance in the wonder world of medical science and introduce super speciality services, the neighbouring state's KLES-Belgaum is already working wonders for Goans who have been thronging to this hospital during the last eight years. The hospital is planning to introduce a bus service from Goa and better still it plans to introduce tele-medicine linkage between its beneficiaries in Goa and the doctors in the field of super speciality medical services.The hospital is now vying to promote health tourism and is eyeing Goa from where it hopes to lure tourists and foreigners. (H) ST BARTHOLOMEW'S FEAST AT CHORAO: On August 24 there will be festivity and celebrations all over Chorao, especially in the parish of St Bartholomew. The Church celebrates the feast of St Bartholomew, the apostle. Chorao or Choddnem is the largest of the seventeen islands in Goa. (H) HARVEST FEAST AT MERCES: The harvest feast of the Comunidade of Morobim-P-Grande, Merces Vaddy, will be celebrated on August 24, organised by the gaonkars of the said Comunidade. (H) LECTURE SERIES AT FUNDACAO: Noted artist/critic Mr Gulam Mohammad Sheikh, shall deliver two lectures at Fundacao Oriente on August 28 and 29 at 5 pm. Mr Sheikh will speak on 'Musing about Mixed Creatures' and will discuss about composite images in art besides his own works. Mr Jaimini Mehta, principal of Goa College of Architecture, will deliver a lecture on "Mythical Space" on September 4 at 5.30 pm at Fundacao Oriente. (NT) WHOM DO WE CATCH THIS TIME? No doubt the fishing ban was needed to conserve depleting marine resources. However, this ban has become a contentious issue between the western states of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka where the law is observed more in breach than in practice. And today, the race is not on who will get the best catch or who will bring in the tastiest species but rather who can violate the ban at the earliest. (H) D'PIETRO GETS FR ANTONIO KONKANI AWARD: Bonaventure Peter Fernandes, more popularly known by his pen name Bonaventure D'Pietro, has been selected for the Fr Antonio Pereira Konkani Award 2004, instituted by Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendr. Pietro, who was often referred to as James Hadley Chase of Konkani, wrote around a dozen novels and "Mhojea Paicho Fondd" and "Kallea Vistidachi Choli" were some of his popular novels. He has been awarded twice each in the past by the Kala Academy and Konkani Bhasha Mandal for his writing in Roman Konkani. The veteran writer, who lives in Chinvar, Anjuna, is also a versatile musician and has written three tiatrs. TSKK is planning to collect a corpus fund of Rs.12 lakh to enhance the award amount, which is presently Rs.25,000.
