ANSWER TO BRITISH MURDER MYSTERY IN GOA? Scotland Yard detectives have
reopened investigations into the mysterious disappearance of the Seventh
Earl of Lucan who disappeared 30-years-ago after allegedly bludgeoning his
children's nanny to death. It is expected that one of the areas of
investigation will check into whether Lord Lucan surfaced in Goa and took on
the guise of a hippy. They have also developed an image of how Lord Lucan
would look at the age of 69, his current age if he is still alive. (GT)

TOI GROUP TO MANAGE IFFI: Times Infotainment, a subsidiary of the Times of
India group has been appointed as the event management company for IFFI
2004. The firm, whose bid was the lowest among 17, was chosen from a host of
bidders to handle the management of inaugurals, award winning ceremony,

"HUMANITY IS GREATEST RELIGION": Archbishop Patriarch Filipe Neri Ferrao
called upon the masses to follow a spiritual path and dedicate themselves to
the services of humanity. He was addressing a gathering of his followers at
Our Lady of Grace Church Hall as a part of his pastoral visit to this
Church, on October 17. "The message of peace, humanity, integrity and
brotherhood should be passed on to one and all. This will make our country

BATORA RESIDENTS AGAINST HILL-CUTTING: The residents of Batora-Curtorim have
alleged that a hill is being illegally cut at Batora to construct a housing
project comprising about 140 residential units and have asked the Curtorim
village panchayat to initiate steps to curb the activity. (NT)

MAN COMMITS SUICIDE IN MOIRA: One Rosario Fernandes (19), resident of
Katizorwado, Moira, committed suicide on October 17 morning by hanging
himself with a nylon rope to the ceiling at his residence. Although the
exact cause of the suicide is yet to be ascertained, family sources said
that the deceased was a cancer patient and was ailing for about four years.

RAPE CASE SUSPECT GETS REMAND: Parshuram, who was arrested by the Colva
police on October 16 for allegedly raping a minor girl, was produced before
the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Margao and a seven-day remand was

ATEC, CANADIAN COLLEGE JOIN HANDS: A memorandum of understanding was signed
between Agnel Technical Education Complex, Verna, and Algonquin College,
Ottawa-Ontario, Canada, as part of the ongoing Canada India Industry
Institute Linkage Project. The main objectives of the MoU are the
development of programmes in hospitality and tourism; the development of new
curriculum in Photonics; the identification and development of other
programme in areas such as health and community studies; a review of
curricula, teaching methodologies and practicum's of programmes that lead to

"FRENCH SCIENCE TODAY" LECTURES AT ALLIANCE FRANCAISE: Alliance Francaise de
Goa will organise "French Science Today 2004", under the aegis of Alliance
Francaise Network and the Scientific Co-operation Section of the Embassy of
France in India. The lecture on Biology will be delivered by Dr Jean-marc
Reyrat on October 20, at 6 pm at the Goa Science Centre, Miramar. Dr Richard
Taillet will deliver the lecture on Astrophysics on October 26 at 6 pm, at

organised a two-day seminar on intellectual property rights in association

'HINGLISH' MAY BECOME A WORLD HIT: Professor David Crystal, the author of
more than 50 books on English, says 350 million Indians speak it ('Hinglish
') as a second language in India, exceeding the number of native English
speakers in Britain and America. Professor Crystal argues that the growing
popularity of Indian culture around the world, including Bollywood movies,
means that Hinglish will soon become more widely spoken outside the

"POETRY PEOPLE" IN MAPUSA: Poetry People, a group of poets and poetry
lovers, was formed at a small gathering Mapusa on October 16, at the second
all-Goa poetry reading session (the first was held during the Mhapsa Fest
last year). The participants of the 14-odd gathering at Cedric and Emily
D'Souza residence at Merry Villa, Altinho, Mapusa, spent a few moments to
reflect on the life and work of the late Dom Moraes, one of the country's
best known poets. Among those who recited the poems were Anita Pinto, Tara

BSNL BROADBAND: Connecting 198 cities, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd will roll
out its Broadband services by December 2004. "We plan to target one million

political gamble has paid rich dividends. If this formula is repeated then
the Congress party may lose some more MLAs unless the damage control begins
promptly.People would be closely watching the rehabilitation of the neo-BJP
MLA, Mr Fernandes. He would certainly expect a position of power as a
"reward" for his political gamble. The state government is promoting
