After putting the ball past the Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Paul into the net, Junior went up in the air and was met by Bagan goalie Subrata Paul who also leapt apparently to thwart the Brazilian; Paul's right arm appeared to touch the chest of Junior who fell on the ground and lay flat.Cristiano's wife Juliana who left for Bangalore immediately after she received the tragic news, is likely to take the body of her husband to Brazil for the final rites. (GT) GOA CLUBS SHOCKED: Goa Football Association president Shivanand Salgaocar expressed shock over the tragic demise of Brazilian star player Cristiano after the Federation Cup final match in Bangalore. KONKANI TIATR AT IFFI: Goan traditional tiatr "Konn", written and directed by eminent playwright and actor John D'Silva will be staged in the International Film Festival of India at Open Air Auditorium, Campal-Panaji today at 6.30 pm. Free entry passes will be available outside the main gate of the Open Air from 5 pm onwards on first come first serve basis. (GT) "ALISHA" AT INOX TODAY: Rajendra Talak's Konkani film "Alisha" will be screened at Inox today at 6 pm. This is the first Konkani film which has the unique distinction of donning the honours at IFFI. The cast comprises of all Goan actors like Dr Ajay Vaidya, Ketan Acharya, Ashalata and the lead actress Priyanka Bhidye at Alisha. (GT) VINTAGE CELEBRITIES: On Sunday (Dec 5), the crowds lined up along the Dayanand Bandodkar road for a glimpse of celebrities of a different kind. As part of the 35th IFFI, the Vintage car Rally with a total number of 55 antique vehicles (pre-1951 era) was flagged off by the Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar. Five motorcycles, a BSA M-29 (1942), an NSU (1953), a Java (1948) and two Triumphs led the rally. The Rally also witnessed a 1928 Lanchester model owned by Dr Ravi Prakash of Bangalore who claimed that it belonged to Motilal Nehru. There was also a 1954 Carreira owned by DN Naik, Margao. Other cars that participated in the rally were a 1936 seven-seater Mercedes 230 W, a 1926 Morris Oxford, a 1932 Chrysler Cadillac and 1951 Pontiac Chieftain. (H) CM ADMITS GOOF-UPS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on December 5 admitted minor goof-ups in the organizational aspects of the IFFI festival but termed it as "a learning experience". The group of people objecting to holding of IFFI in Goa is "very small", Parrikar said, adding that their opposition apart, he faced no obstacles or difficulties whatsoever in putting up the infrastructure in record time for the festival. Parrikar also disclosed to the delegates that the privilege of hosting IFFI in Goa was a "gift" he received from former I&B Minister, Sushma Swaraj, after winning the mid-term election in Goa in 2002. (H) CM PRIORITISES ON HEALTH, EDUCATION: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, said on December 5 that while Goa has hosted the International Festival of India, the government continues to have health, education and other basic needs as its priority. Responding to an observation made by Goan pop star, Remo Fernandes, which appeared in the local dailies on December 5, Mr Parrikar said he fully agreed with Remo's view. He said his government had strengthened healthcare facilities in Goa, laid stress on imparting quality education vis-à-vis computer education. (NT) RUSSIAN WOMEN IN SEX TRADE? Though government has succeeded in clearing prostitution from Baina area, it is alleged that the sex trade involving women from Russia is mushrooming in South Goa. According to reliable sources, a large number of Russian females visiting Goa as belly dancers and putting up at starred hotels along the coastal belt of South Goa are learnt to be involved in sex business. (H) BODY FOUND: The body of 44-year-old hawaldar Suresh Naik, was recovered some six kilometers of Mormugao Harbour on December 5 morning. Naik, who was residing at Porvorim, was reported missing on December 1. During the past few days, Suresh was on duty at Panjim for the IFFI. (H) A DATE WITH HISTORY AT GANDAULIM: Croatian film director Branko Invanda, whose film "The Horseman" has been well received at IFFI 2004, had made a resolve to see the Sao Braz church when he left home with his wife last month. Accompanied by the heroine Zrinka Cvitesic and her boy friend, Igor Beketic, the foursome took time off from their engagement at the Festival to travel to the sleepy hamlet of Gandaulim with a population of only 200, barely 3 kms away from Old Goa.A Croatian scholar, Zorayka Matisic, had made a startling find - while studying Sanskrit in India - that her countrymen had links with the Portuguese and had constructed the Svete Vlaho (Sao Braz or St Blaise) church in Gandaulim. Some tourists are actually planning to move away for the Christmas period - the reverse of what used to happen. The road now needs an adjacent footpath.I write in the hope that something can be done before someone gets injured on this road. Ms Khan believed to have suffered the burn injuries while cooking around noon time at Chandor. (H) CASHEW NUT PRICE HITS ALL TIME HIGH: The cashew nut prices have gone up by Rs.50 per kilogram during the last one and a half months in Goa, but mind you this has nothing to do with tourism fever of the season. The hike in cashew nut prices is primarily due to the low yield of the crop this season, which in turn was caused by early rains this year. The arrival of monsoon in mid-May affected 15 to 20 per cent of the cashew crop. Average quality cashew nuts are available for Rs.270-300 per kg currently as compared to last year's price of Rs.200 to Rs.240 per kg. (H) PASSIONATE OUTPOURING: An exhibition of paintings titled 'Creative Images of Inculturation' is currently showing at the Fundacao Oriente art gallery, Fontainhas, Panaji. Works of Sister Claire and few others are on display. Sister Claire's paintings show her intense love and devotion towards the Christian faith and an everlasting influence of Hindu culture in which she spent her primary years preceding her conversion. Sr Claire was born in 1936 in Andhra Pradesh in a Hindu family.
