Reacting to a series of reports on the controversial VCD on Goa's liberation struggle, the Governor told Gomantak Times in an exclusive chat, "I would like to know the details of all those who made the film or were associated with it in any capacity were associated with it in any capacity." (GT) NOTHING OBJECTIONABLE: KARMALI: Even as the Catholic clergy and the opposition has reacted sharply to the controversial CD titled "Goa ka swadhinta sangram", a member of the script committee of the film and freedom fighter Nagesh Karmali has vouched for the authenticity of its contents and have rubbished the objections.The script had been vetted by noted historians and people drawn from all walks of life which included some journalists, he said. (GT) FR OLAVO PEREIRA PASSES AWAY: Fr Olavo Velho Pereira, Director of Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media passed way yesterday evening after a terminal illness. He had undergone the fourth chemotherapy session only a few days back as he was suffering from cancer. He was 55 and was ordained priest on 27 April 1975. For the past few months, he had been staying at the Convent of St John of God at Old Goa with his sister who is a nun. His death has cast a spell of gloom among Church leaders and others. The funeral cortege will leave from his residence to the Holy Trinity Church, Benaulim, at 3.30 pm. (GT) GARBAGE PANEL CHIEF QUITS: Manohar Adpaikar, the PMC councillor, has resigned from the post of chairman of Garbage Management Committee and Committee for Legal Matters. In his letter of resignation, Advocate Adpaikar stated that he was not taken into confidence nor the decisions taken by the respective committee were implemented. (H) 50% OF GOA URBANISED: CM: The chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, stated that almost 50 per cent of Goa had been urbanized, while another 20 per cent of the State was semi-urban. Nevertheless, he said it was the duty of the government to take development of urban areas still further that too along with rural areas. (NT) FEASIBILITY REPORT ON MOPA AIRPORT: The techno-economic feasibility study for the Mopa international airport is all set to kickstart in January 2005. According to official sources, the study will be conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation from Montreal, Canada. (H) ESI HOSPITAL NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY: PARRIKAR: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, stated that the State pays Rs.10 crore as premium to Employees' State Insurance Hospital and it receives only Rs.4 crore in return. Mr Parrikar alleged that the ESI Hospital has not been functioning properly as various benefits from the hospital have not been reaching the concerned employees. (NT) BODY OF GIRL RECOVERED: The Mormugao police on Sunday recovered the body of 17-year-old girl who committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at a lonely place at Bharatline, Bogda in Vasco. According to the police, the girl was mentally disturbed since birth. She had left her house on Saturday night carrying a tin of kerosene and a matchbox. (NT) SAHITYA AWARD FOR JAYANTI: Well-known Konkani writer, Jayanti Naik, has been awarded the prestigious Sahitya Academy award for her novel "Athang", a compilation of short stories in Konkani. Writings on rural lifestyle of Goans and issues pertaining to women have been Naik's forte. Her books have been translated into various languages like Hindi, Malayalam and Telugu in addition to English. Born in Amona-Kepem, Naik started her career as a poetess and gradually turned to literature which has become her strong point since then. She has written extensively on children's literature and other related issues. A total of 19 books penned by her have so far been published. Naik has been decorated with awards from the Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Kala Academy and the TMA Pai Foundation.
