[][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] ON MARCH 8, 2005 Goanet greets all its women readers -- on the occasion of International Women's Day. Below are some highlights which have appeared in local daily Gomantak Times on the occasion. In the background as we type this in, the All India Radio's FM service has RJ Leita playing a number of songs dedicated to women. Currently: Santana's Black Magic Woman SASHIKALA GOVEKAR: She's a mother, a sister, a professional, a provider, a fighter, a struggler, a realist, a radical, a performer, a perfectionist, a lady, a life-giver, a fisherwoman and a sarpanch! Sashikala Govekar -- a fisherwoman of Mapusa -- has been selected as Gomantak Times' woman of the year. She was born in a poor family in Nerul, used to help a person in their house to ferry passengers from Nerul to Candolim (and got an anna as pocketmoney), and then fell in love with Janu, a young boy from Saligao who worked as a toddy-tapper for her neighbour. Presently her daily turnover is approx Rs 80,000. She employs 20 people who work unitedly. She owns two shops in Mapusa, instead of sitting in an airconditioned office, she prefers to come to the fish market. Besides being a fisherwoman, she is also the sarpanch of Nerul. (Gomantak Times) SHANTI MARIA FONSECA, legal advisor of the National Federation of Indian Women, a social scientist and former lecturer in sociology and business law, writes on International Women's Day: "I may be a drop in the ocean, but I am not insignificant.... We live in a male dominated society. But I look forward to the day when empowered women will command a special status, dignity and respect in society." (GT) CHILD'S PLAY: RAPE, MOLESTATION AND ABUSE. Hurt them young, and watch them grow. With 23 tabulated cases -- and countless others -- of abuse on minor girls, the hurt and hate mantra has consumed Goa. It leaves in its wake scars on the body and wounds in the soul. While we raise a toast to the courage and spirit of our women, we are numbed and traumatized that for every smile on a woman's face, there is buckets of tears. Journalist Inacia Rodrigues looks at attacks on minor girls and says this is no kidds stuff. GOANETTERS Albertina 'Tina' Almeida and Sabina Martins were among the women observing International Women's Day at Panjim on Monday. This programme focussed on 'Our Steps, Our Paths'. Students, housewives, agricultural workers, professionals -- and other working women -- marched should to shoulder. Their demands: "No woman shall be beaten, no girl child shall remain unborn... stop drowning women in alcohol... no to casinos and golf courses ... health, education, dignity and love is every girl child's right". It was organised by women's collective Bailancho Saad. (GT) Herald reports that the Saad plans to set up a 'drop-in centre' for women. (H) o Congress MLAs rush to Delhi as dissolution looms large (GT) o Governor Jamir calls for depoliticisation of police department (GT) o BJP, Digambar kick off poll campaign in Margao today. A resident of Boca de Vaca was arrested for involvement, after police interrogated possible witnesses on Monday and held an identification parade. (GT) o Cops crack whip over the Raj Bhavan riot, says Herald. o Government yet to plan sewage treatment plant in northern coastal belt, writes Reuven Proenca. (GT) Standard of hotel Solid wastes per room/day Liquid waste per room/litres Low 0.68 kg 459 Medium 0.75 kg 480 High 1.39 kg 482 Luxury 3.10 kg 1050 o Photo in GT shows Governor S C Jamir entering the Secretariat complex at Porvorim, to attend a meeting with secretaries and heads of department of Monday. In photo are Chief Secretary Kiran Dhingra, R Raghuraman, Secretary to Governor, police chief UK Katna and Secretary (General Admn) S K Jain. o In Quepem, a trapped panther dies as forest staff look on. (Herald) o Kala Academy is advertising for a guitar lecturer (leave vacency) H o British Council Mumbai has invited applications for the DeSouza Trust Goa Scholarship. Since 1998, several Goan students completed studies in the UK in subjects as diverse as media management, architecture, computing and design, TV documentary making, music therapy, architecture conservation, human rights, communication systems and signal processing, and innovation technology and the law.
