DEATHS & OBITUARIES: PAYING TRIBUTES Sr Marcilia, AC
---------------------------------------------------------------------

VALMIKI FALEIRO ON THE DEATH OF SR MARCILIA: Sr. Marcilia (nee
Marcilia Carvalho, born Aldona 20/Oct/1936), A.C. avowed member of
the congregation of the Apostolic Carmel (AC), passed away in
Bangalore, 7th Sept 2005, early hours.

She was, for the last several years ... seven, nine? ...
the Secretary General of her Congregation in India. Earlier
to that, the strict disciplinarian (much loved, much
          hated... ) was Principal of: 1. Holy Rosary Convent, Nuvem;
          2. St. Thomas Girls High School, Aldona; 3. St. Mary's
Convent High School, Mapusa; and 4. Fatima Convent H.S.,
          Margao.

For the past 3 or 4 years, Sr. Marcilia was afflicted with cancer,
and died with her boots on (she held fort for the Congregation at her
Secretarial top post, until, I'm told, it physically wasn't any more
possible.)

Born to Assumpcao (yeah, alive and hale at Aldona, I believe) and
late Joaquim Antonio Carvalho of Aldona-Bardez, she was one of five
siblings, eldest of whom (Sr. Visita) belongs to the very same
Congregation (*Fudllem zot - plow - tosench fatlem zot*.)

I know you wouldn't have really adored the woman while you were at
school while Sr.Marcilia was Principal, but personally I admired her
precisely for her being a bit orthodox, unyielding and a strict
disciplinarian... who led by example and upfront (remember she
entered my life ages after my own ex-Military doctor father had
kissed his creator and the heart ached for discipline!!) and one who,
despite her social position as Principal of so many much sought-after
convent schools and the sheer force of her personality, herself in
person led such a simple, frugal and simple a life!!

That impressed... and told me a lot about the serious
religious, we often are so fond of deriding!

Though I could not make it for the funeral, made sure another friend
of hers (and mine), Lawrence of David & Co. (Goa), went there...
escorting three other A.C. nuns. They flew in yesterday to B'lore to
attend the funeral, which should be starting about less than an hour
from this moment ... that is, if you're online and reading this as
it comes in. Wreaths will be placed on behalf of Sr. Marcilia's
several friends from Margao, including Daisy and self. We must all
transit, some day. See you then, dear Sr. Marcilia :-)Until then,
R.I.P. -- Valmiki Faleiro (Margao)

DEATHS & OBITUARIES: PAYING TRIBUTES Shyamsundar Neogi, ex-MLA
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Miguel Braganza <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> pays tribute to Mapusa's
former legislator: Shyamsundar Jairam Neogi, former MLA (1980-85)
of Mhapsa, former chairman of Mhapsa Municipal Council current
president of the general body of Dnyanapasarak Mandal[ which runs
three colleges, three HS schools and one high school in
Mhapsa/Assagao]and current chairman of the Vaishya Urban Co-op.
Credit Society died of a massive heart attack on 29 August, 2005.
He was an active Rotarian and was there even for the meeting on
last Friday 26 August for a session on stress management
techniques. Affectionately called Shyamoo, he was endearing in his
ways and always a gentleman in his behaviour. The Rotary Club of
Mapuca held a condolence meeting to remember Rtn. Shyamoo and to
share the fond memories that the members had of him.

Charter President Rtn. Suresh Amoncar recalled Shyamoo
for their days together in the pre-primary school. they
were friends, neighbours and classmates. shyamoo's mother
and the late Gundu Amoncar had been classmates and their
two families knew each other well. Shyamoo was an honest
to God boy who grew to be a man of integrity. He was
without malice and thoroughly transparent in his
dealings. He saw goodness that lay hidden in others and
encouraged those around him. Shyamoo was a gentleman
always and a true Rotarian in thought and action. He was
a politician, but never a manipulating and scheming one.

Rtn. Vassudev "Prakash" Verlekar remembered Shyamoo as a man who
never hurt anyone in his life. He would negotiate, compromise,
reconcile. He promoted peace and togetherness. Rtn.Prakash, who was
catapulted into becoming Shyamoo's election agent during his first
candidacy in 1980 on a almost unkown and ephemeral Congress (Urs)
ticket, emphasized that Shyamoo changed the face of politics in
Goa. From Liberation till 1980, Mhapsa was a MGP bastion. During
the same period, the MGP ruled the then Union Territory of Goa.
1980 proved to be a watershed in Goan politics. The MGP was
defeated in Mhapsa and the Congress (U) converted to Congress (I)
and formed the Government. Things have never been the same again.

Charter Member Rtn.Jacome Saldanha said that Shyamoo was truly
secular in spirit and in action. He was an early bird and was
generally the first person to phone and wish members on their
birthdays. He worked hard to officially restore the name of Mhapsa
to its original form instead of being spelt as Mapuca or Mapusa.
Till the last week, he was writing to even his home club to change
the spelling. It has change the spelling in its address at
Shyamoo's insistance. When he said, "Shyamoo was a wonderful
person. I will miss him." he really spoke for all the club members
and most people who knew Shyamoo well. Rtn. Avadhut Pokle
remembered Shyamoo as a committed man who would dig into his
pockets for a good cause.

Young Dr.Ajit P.Mopkar remembered Shyamoo as a rare politician who
had no known enemies. He was successful but friendly always.
Dr.Mopkar remembered playing rummy with Shyamoo at the last club
picnic at Arrossim. Shyamoo found no difficulty in mixing with
youth. He also remembered his emphasis on spelling MHAPSA right and
asked the club to honour his wish. The Mhapsa Municipal Council,
where Shyamoo was the first President, had already made the change.

Rtn Vishram "Subhash" Walavalkar remembered Shyamoo the navigator
who sometimes lost his way. Shyamoo normally sat in the navigator's
seat in any person's car. Form there he would indicate which turn
to take, left or right ... or wrong! Close friends would tease him
during railway journeys that it was a pity that the train cannot be
navigated! Subhash fondly remembered the effervescent, enthusiastic
Shyamoo who was active to his very last day.

Rtn. Mahendra K. Gupta remembered his good advisor, Shyamoo, who
never found any problem in any problem! " Ah that? No problem!".
Perhaps, MKG was the only person who had an inkling that Shyamoo
was not well. He had confided in MKG at the last Rotary meeting
that he attended, as an senior, active and paid-up member, " I am
not feeling well. I feel it inside."

Shyamoo is survived by his wife, Kishori, two sons Nitin and Nandan
and daughter, Nalina. Nandan is the artist who, along with Rajendra
Usapkar, designed the logo for the 'Mhapsa Fest' in 2004. He is the
brother of former Rotarian, Dr.Shripad Neogi. We will miss him and
his pleasant company. -- Miguel Braganza

FORMER P.T. TEACHER AT ST MARY'S MAPUSA:
Arlette Azavedo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> informs of the
death of Miss Shashi, the former PT teacher of St Mary's at
Mapusa. Writes Ms Azavedo: "She was 58, active and always
sporting. She passed away after a brief illness at GMC,
Bambolim on August 25, and leaves behind her husband,
          daughter Preethi and son Paul."

Adds Arlette: "Her memories are fresh in my mind as a young
and full-of-energy PT teacher. She would get angry with us
as we were too smart for her and we would never listen to
her, specially when she used to keep us hours on the
grounds for practice. After all the firing, she used to
give up. With a few minutes, she would melt and say to us,
'You are big girls, no shame, no improvement event after
shouting at you'll. Go back to your classes! She shall be
sadly missed by all at St Mary's (Mapusa's main girls
school). Our thoughts are with her dear family."

DIASPORIA: GOANS IN PAKISTANI POLITICS
---------------------------------------------------------------------

MICHAEL ALI <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes in from Pakistan: I have
just returned from Hyderabad (Sind) after monitoring the local
council elections as an international observer on behalf of the
government of Japan....

In the Karachi elections last week a Goan gentleman by the
name of Albin D'Sa stood from Union Council (Saddar Town)
and polled the highest votes among the Christian
candidates. He represented a secular party whose leader
Altaf Hussain is in self-exile in London.

This was the first time in over 28 years that the polls were held
under the joint electorate system (where all voters can vote for any
candidate and not restricted to religion which Zia had introduced and
Musharraf rescinded). Each Union Council has 13 members including one
from the minorities. But they can also stand on general seats.

Usually, the Goans in Pakistan are practically apolitical and rarely
stand or vote in any elections be they local, provincial or national.

The following is a list of Goans (not Catholics) in Politics.

          * Simon D'Lima won a Basic Democrat's seat in the elections
held by Ayub Khan in 1964. At that time he was a school
teacher by profession. Now he is Principal of his own
          successful school, St. Peter's.

* Rev. Fr. Derek Misquita won a seat in the West Pakistan Legislature
in a short lived assembly under Ayub Khan. He is abroad.

* Mr. Francis Xavier Lobo, a businessman who fought on an Awami
League (of Sheikh Mujeeb-ul-Rahman, Bangla Desh) ticket and lost in
1970.

* Late Mrs. Phenomena Pereira, contested for a Sindh assembly seat in
1993 on a Pakistan People's party (of Benazir Bhutto) ticket but
lost. She was employed by Pearl Continental Hotel.

* Mrs. E.C. Pinto, a Supreme Court Lawyer contested for a Sindh
assembly seat but lost under the separate electorate system.

* Mr. Alan Lobo also contested for a Sindh assembly seat but lost,
also under the separate electorate system.

There have been a few other who were in party politics but
did not contest elections such as Mr. Ernest Lobo and Mr.
Joseph Miranda. Both of the Pakistan People's Party.

Please note that this list is not all exclusive as it cover a very
long period of time and there are very few records to fall back upon.
Incidentally, all belong to Karachi as there are hardly any Goans in
the rest of the country.

REPORT FROM DEUTSCHLAND: Rodolfo 'Rudy' de Souza of Chorao
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes in from Germany: It was nice of you to give
some place in Goanet to the Goan Association Germany and their musical
show "Goemcho Avaz" on the occasion of their "Goa Day" celebration.
Although I'm not a member, I was rewarded, on the show day, with sweet
smiles and handshakes.

Let me give you a further report. About a 100 people,
mostly Goans with a sprinkling of curious Germans,
attended the show, which started with a salute to our
Goan expat Basilio Magno (now languishing in sunny
Spain -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]) and the playing of his
composition "Proud to be a Goan", which ended with
hand-clapping, hopping and terribly happy (if you'll
pardon the oxymoron) mixture of tiatrists and audience
          in the Hall and stage.

No auld lang syne here but our good old Goan saudades exchanged at this
once in a seasonal hoop-la. The hall was rather small and so it looked
full. The food was the usual basmati with sorpotel on paper plates. The
food and sound system could have been better though but in the
exhilaration of talking off-stage to the comedians John D'Silva and
Agostinho Temudo, Antoinette Mendes, Pravin Naik, Jose Rod, Succorin,
C.Rosy Alvares and the Goan organiser from England and all the others,
who cared?

As for the committee, Mariano Pereira, prolocuted the show in English
welcoming the artistes, and it was Vito Oliveira who went on stage and
deftly fired off a short but sweet welcome to all in Konkani. Which
took this writer by surprise, for Konkani is indeed full of local
accents and verbal traps and dificulties for public address.

But, good or bad, the evening ended on a happy note which is usual with
us Goans everywhere. Which prompts me to say: Shouldn't all the parallel
organisations and associations, spread all over the world, join together
in some sort of a democratic federation (or is it confederation?) so we
could all speak in one voice?

ON THE TERM ANGLO-INDIAN AND GOANS: Jameela Siddiqi <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
writes on the [EMAIL PROTECTED] network: Anglo-Indian is often
a misnomer in that there was a time when nearly all Christian,
English-speaking Indians were defined as such -- irrespective of whether
or not they had White ancestry. And, they were defined as such by OTHER
Indians, the idea of the "other" being the main distinguishing factor.

Many people still think of "Anglo-Indian" as somebody who is
rather "anglicised" and speaks English better than the average
Indian! (And, of course, they have to be Christian rather than
Hindu, Muslim or Sikh.) I know Pakistanis in London (Muslims) who
think Goans are "Anglo-Indians". Am I right in thinking that the
original AngloIndians were the offspring of the women who resided
in the bibi-ghars? (Outhouses, constructed for mistresses).
I believe this was normal practice and did not carry any stigma
because, by and large, the English mem-sahibs were considered too
fragile to take up residence in India. And the sea-journey itself
was treacherous. Of course, the opening of the Suez Canal changed
all that and they went in their droves to join husbands -- and
single women went to India as governesses or for husband-hunting

The arrival of the white mem-sahibs spelled the end of the "bibi-ghars".
Of course, inter-racial liaisons still happened, but they were swept
under the carpet. Alongside this, I believe there were also a number of
"official" marriages and pairings. Would love to be enlightened by
others on this list who know so much more about all this than I do.

IN A LIGHTER VEIN: When a humour writer pens lyrics
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Donning the robes of a song-writer, humour writer
Cecil Pinto pens the lyrics to pay tribute to a
prominent Goan figure of the yesteryears. This
was earlier posted on Goanet http://www.goanet.org

Dear Isabel,

Thanks for asking me to give some thought to possible song lyrics for
your forthcoming play on Abbe Faria. I know you didn't exactly ask me
but I took on the task anyway. My songwriting capabilities, I feel,
have been underutilized and I am glad to have this opportunity to
compose some songs in honour of this great Goan. Unfortunately I do
not have much of a musical aptitude -- but then neither do most of
the Billboard Top 10 musicians these days. And as for Trance, Rave
and Hip-Hop the less said the better. So I have taken the liberty of
using tunes from classic songs and re-writing the lyrics to suit the
theme. Please let me know if the lyrics below are suitable for your
play. If not I will try dismantling some other classic songs.

Cecil Pinto
(Songwriter)

-------Song # 1 ---------

My first song is a modification of the song 'Maria' from the classic
movie "Sound of Music". The song, as you must be aware, is sung in
different voices by the nuns, one nun at a time and then in chorus.
Considering that Jose Custodio Faria's mother did go on to become a
Mother Superior I think it is just appropriate. You could have
priests singing it. The setting could be at the time Faria was
studying at the seminary in Portugal at the age of fifteen.

I have appended the original lyrics for your reference, below my
re-written version.
----------

"Faria"

(one priest at a time)
He climbs a tree
And scrapes his knee

His vest has got a tear

He waltzes on his way to mass
And whistles on the stair

And underneath his cassock
He wears no underwear!

I've even heard him calling himself an Abbe

He's always late for chapel,

But his penitence is real

He's always late for everything

Except for every meal

I hate to have to say it but I very firmly feel

(all together)
Faria's not meant to be an Abbe

(one priest)
I'd like to say a word in his behalf:
Faria makes me laugh

(all priests laugh)

(Father Superior)
How do you hold a Goan like Faria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?

(one priest)
How do you find a word that means Faria?

(one priest at a time)

A will-o-wisp?

A hypno-tist?

A quaaaaack!!!!

Many a thing you know you'd like to tell him
Many a thing he ought to understand

But how do you make him stay?
And listen to all you say

How do you keep a wave upon the sand?

Oh how do you hold a Goan like Faria?
How do you hold a moon beam in your hand?

When I'm with him
I'm confused
Out of focus
And bemused
And I never know exactly where I am

(one priest at a time)

Unpredictable as the weather

He's as flighty as his father

He's a conman

He's a demon

He's a clown

He'd out pester any pest
And hypnotise the rest

He can spellbind with a gesture of his hand

He is gentle

He is wild

He's a riddle

He's a child

He's a headache

He's an angel

He's a boyl!!

(all at once)
How do you hold a Goan like Faria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find a word that means Faria?
How do you hold a moon beam in your hand? ...

-------Song # 2 ---------

My second song suggestion is a re-write of the Tom Jones hit
"Delilah". You could introduce in your play a young French woman who
had once been hypnotised by Abbe Faria and fell madly in love with
him and tried to seduce him. She then realises that the Abbe is a man
of science and a man of God -- and not a man who will partake in the
pleasures of the flesh. She then signs this solo song, inside a
mental asylum, about her failed attempt to seduce him by showing him
a glimpse of her knees. Please note that in 18th century France a
woman's knees were never visible uncovered in genteel society. Being
allowed a glimpse of a woman's knees, in those days, was considered a
highly erotic and suggestive invitation for a sexual encounter.

(Isabel, please note that you have to pay me not only for the song
lyrics but also for adding an element of romance and sex into your
screen play)

------

"Faria"

I saw the light on the night that I passed by your window
I saw the flickering shadows and mists on your blind

I was your woman
But you dumped me and I went out of my mind

My, my, my, Faria
Why, why, why, Faria

I could see, that man was no good for me
But I was lost, hypnotised completely

At break of day when that van drove away, I was waiting
I lifted my skirt and crossed the street to his door

He stood there staring
He saw my knees and promptly shouted 'No!"

My, my, my, Faria
Why, why, why, Faria

So, before, my skirt drops back to the floor
Forgive me Faria, I just couldn't take anymore
Forgive me Faria I just couldn't take anymore

CULINARY CORNER: Healthy n fresh -- Spinach salad
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a yummy recipe for one of my favorite greens, "Spinach".

Spinach Salad - 1/2 cup of toasted almonds or toasted
walnuts, 1 pound of spinach leaves (cut up in bite-sized
pieces), 1 cup dried cranberries (if you do not have
cranberries, you can toss in a few golden raisins or leave
out this item), 2 tablespoons of toasted sesame seeds, 1
tablespoon poppy seeds, 1/2 cup of white sugar, 2 teaspoons
minced onion, 1/4 teaspoon paprika, 1/4 cup of white wine
vinegar, 1/4 cup cider vinegar, 1/2 cup of vegetable oil.

In a large bowl, combine the spinach with the toasted almonds and
cranberries. In a medium bowl, whisk together the sesame seeds,
poppy seeds, sugar, onion, paprika, white wine vinegar, cider
vinegar, and vegetable oil. Toss with spinach just before serving.
