What happens to the tender process? Reduced to a joke. See ad in Herald Oct 18, 2005 page 11. Incidentally, electricity supplies in Goa's panchayats are known to be a source for local corruption, and those in the know talk of standard commission rates. No wonder they need to be replaced so often! ----------------------------------------------------------------- EDUCATION ----------------------------------------------------------------- QUERY ABOUT EDUCATION: Mario Rodrigues <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes, "I am presently in the Gulf and my son is presently in Grade 6 in St. Mary's School affliated to the UK sylabus. ENGICO TREK: George Easaw <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> reports from Farmagudi: The nature club of the College of Engineering Goa trekked from Collem to Dudhsagar waterfalls through the forest for the annual trek on Oct 9. There were 26 in all. The trek was exhilarating. Coming just after the rains, the streams were in heavy flow and there was greenery everywhere. A slippery trek, this was simply nature at it's best. There was some river-crossing on the way, lots of swimming, some steep mountain climbing, almost 16 kms of walking in the cool forest with lot of leech attacks with the return journey from Dudhsagar to Collem on three diesel engines. Says he: "Hundred years earlier, the Moidekars had brought out a two-page flyer. I saw nothing published by Moidekars about their village before or after that date! More recently I have received requests for that little booklet. Only 500 copies were printed by me and distributed on the feast day in the Church." Write for him for a copy of the PDF file. Incidentally, there were two Flemish brothers in Goa at the time Moira Church was first built. They were diamond dealers, Jacques and Joseph de Couttre. At the beginning of the 17th century the Dutch arrival in the Indian seas led the Portuguese administration in Goa to keep a close watch on the Dutch and Flemish residents in Portuguese India. Some of them, including Couttre brothers were arrested and packed to Lisbon. They managed to find their way to freedom with the help of their diamonds! Jacques de Couttre wrote about his adventures. The manuscript found in the National Library of Madrid was edited and published recently. Says Teo: "What interests here is a notarial deed found in the National Library of Lisbon. It mentions that it was Joseph de Couttre (they passed as "Couto" in Goa) who assisted the Franciscans financially to build the first structure of Moira church of Our Lady of Conception. This changes somewhat the story of Fr. Paulo de Trindade cited by me in the brochure. The notarial deed was drawn in Goa on 14 March 1623." http://histheory.tripod.com/moira_86.pdf ------------------------------------------------------------------- DIASPORA LINKS ------------------------------------------------------------------- QUERY FROM JAPAN: Artist and long-time Goanetter Venantius Pinto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> says, "I am writing from Awajishima, Japan -- here attending a Japanese woodblock Printmaking residency. TIATR IN AMCHI DILLI: Goans and other Konkani speaking people from in and around Delhi were treated to a 'Tiatr' on October 9, 2005 presented by Goenkarancho Ekvot. A 20-member troupe from Goa entertained us with 'Uzvaddant Kallok' (darkness amidst light) written and directed by comedian Domnic. The event took place at Fr. Agnel's School auditorium, Gautam Nagar, New Delhi. Chief guests for the evening were Churchill Alemao, MP, South Goa, Auxiliary Bishop of Delhi Anil Couto and Sheikh Hassan Haroon, former Minister for Industries, Government of Goa. Mrs. Suman Kurade, President of Goenkarancho Ekvot, New Delhi, welcomed all present and gave information about the organisation and its upcoming activities. Each of the dignitaries said a 'few' words. Speeches over, the show began. 'Uzvaddant Kallok' is a present day family drama full of hilarious encounters yet good enough to send across a sensible message relevant in today's social set-up. It is the story of Ruchi, President of the Mahila Mandal and a dominating wife with high political connections, and her henpecked husband Domnic who is the Principal of the D & D College. Though he is a total misfit in this prestigious post, he has managed to get from being a peon to principal with the help of his high profile wife. Ravi their college-going son and daughter Kushi are the typical pampered kids of today who have all the undue freedom and access to all things material. Both turn wayward, as the parents have no time for them. The mother manipulates Ravi's admission to a medical college. On the other hand Kushi, is deeply in love with Kiran. Then there is Anand, the orphaned nephew of the husband who stays in their house. He takes all the blame for some of the mischief played by the two kids and becomes the scapegoat for all humiliations. To cut a long story short, Ravi goes to stay in a hostel and here comes in contact with friends who show him the wrong directions in life. He bunks lectures, stays away from exams and does everything except study. Finally he returns home from the hostel after contracting AIDS from a foreign student! The moral of the story? Be watchful about your kids and their activities, especially those kids who are studying or living away from home. 'Uzvaddant Kallok' has a good dose of hilarious comedy. A couple of jokes and songs taking a dig at life in Goa and the local politics had the audience in splits. The drama highlights and acknowledges the immense contribution of all the stalwarts of the Konkani stage over the last 112 odd years. The acting was of a high quality and with the bare minimum on stage the troupe put up an excellent show. Goenkarancho Ekvot is a registered organization of Goans residing in Delhi and the adjoining states. It aims to promote social and cultural advancement of Goans, as well as to organize programmes for spreading awareness of Goan culture and tradition. The organization was founded on January 27, 2001 and is the dream of every Goan who is looking forward to come together and work for the Goan cause and its development. -- Fatima Pais. ------------------------------------------------------------------- FILMS ------------------------------------------------------------------- MOVING IMAGES FILM CLUB informs its members: The 36th International Film Festival of India is once again being held in Panjim, Goa from November 24 to December 4, 2005. Says he: "The ones available in the market -- I have bought several ("good" copies, the dealers assure me) copies at Rs. 350 and above -- are disappointing!. None of them is original, but copied from Doordarshan TV programmes." By some coincidence, Jerome Mendes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in to GNB some time back: "Thanks for your email and I will get back to you once we know what we are going to do with the Konkani films. Yes I have all the three films on VCD and will definitely let Goans througout the world have a copy once we make copies of them. The biggest challenge appears to be providing enough time in the school timetable to make this a meaningful exercise for students. In general, there is no time scheduled during the school day for this (apart from the state mandated computer skills classes), and there is extreme reluctance to leave the school lab open after-school hours for access to students. I'd be curious to hear how other projects are overcoming this obstacle. ------------------------------------------------------------------- LANGUAGE ------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT ABOUT THE PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE: Leopoldo Rocha <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes in to say, "I am very pleased to join Goa-Research-Net... First of all I would like to know if one is allowed to send a contribution in Portuguese. My mother-tongue is Portuguese along with Konkani, this one as a spoken language only. It is true I studied for one year Konkani-Marathi in the Rachol Seminary and afterwards preached many a sermon in excellent Bardesi Konkani. But culturally I am Portuguese and express myself with ease in this language.... Recently I came across two souvenirs from two village curches of Goa. Though their editors were familiar with the Portuguese language, written and spoken, there was not a single article, even a small one in Portuguese in those mononographs.... Once the Rachol Seminary used to publish regularly a 'Anuario'. Its contents comprised articles in Portuguese, English, Konkani and even Marathi! As someone told me. to write in Portuguese in Goa is not today politically correct." ------------------------------------------------------------------- RELIGION ------------------------------------------------------------------- CONFERENCE ON CHRISTIANITY IN INDIA: Constantino Xavier offers a link to a conference on Christianity in India, Dec 3-4, in Fatima, Portugal. This peer-reviewed paper is titled "Using Chaos and Complexity Theory and the Design of Experiments to Forecast Stock Prices - Tools of Artificial Intelligence". The paper was selected for presentation and publication in the conference proceedings because of its radically different approach to forecasting Next-Day Stock Prices and the high level of accuracy resulting from the method, says D'Cruz. Jason has been working on stock market-related science research projects for the past three years, with assistance from faculty advisors at Florida Tech. His research interests include the Strategies and Tactics of Billionaires, Using Chaos and Complexity Theory to Beat the Stock Market and Using Yoga to outperform the competition in basketball. Jason's dad Carmo (ex-Velim, Bandra) claims: "Jason took it upon himself to find out the rules of the stock market using the Chaos and Complexity Theory, Technical Indicators and the Design of Experiments methodology. The results were amazing -- his model gave him equations (rules of the game) for the Next Day Stock Prices that were over 95% accurate. Let it rest for about 15 minutes. Beat the curd/yogurt until smooth. Take each strip of meat, pierce and place on the skewers. Baste with pure ghee and cook over hot coals or in a tandoor. The kababs may be grilled in an oven.
