THE SITUATION TURNED tense in the morning, when members of the Muslim community obtained permission from the Quepem deputy collector to stage a protest rally in Curchorem, to condemn the damage to the Muslim prayer house at Guddamol. However, rumours spread that activists from within and outside the State had converged at Curchorem to join the protests and that hundreds of protestors had assembled at the prayer hall at Cariamoddi- Curchorem armed with swords, lathis and other weapons. This incited members of the Hindu community, who rushed to the Shivaji Chowk near Cine Prashant, with the numbers swelling to thousands by about 4.30 pm.
