IFFI 2006 which starts 23 November-4 December in Goa will close with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's film Babel, starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. The opening and closing films were finalised at a high level coordination committee meeting that met in Panaji under the chairmanship of union information minister Priyaranjan Das Munshi. Event managers meanwhile have stepped up efforts, it is learnt, to get Babel star, Brad Pitt to attend the festival, taking advantage of the fact that Pitt and wife Angelina Jolie will be shooting in India for the next three months. IFFI's main Asia/Africa and Latin American competition section that gives away the golden and silver peacock awards will be opened for entries later this month. The jury this year is chaired by Australian director Rolf De Heer. Serving with him will be producer and co-founder of Wild Bunch Distributors (France) Vincent Maraval; Polish actor-director Andrzej Sewarya; French director Oliverie Assayes; and Assamese director Jabau Barua. Twenty five feature films and 21 non-feature films are in the selection list for the Indian Panorama section this year. Gautam Ghosh's film Yatra is expected to premiere at IFFI, among others currently in negotiation. A retrospective on NFDC films down the ages will see the star cast and directors of A Gantuk, Jane Bhi Do Yaaron, Gandhi, Mirch Masala and Magamma come to the festival. An Indian retrospective of late Malayalam film maker Govindan Aravindan will showcase five of his landmark films opening with Vasthuhara, while Spanish actor Javier Bardem will feature in the foreign retrospective. Tributes to Prithviraj Kapoor and Sachin Deb Burman, besides homages to Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Nadira, Naushad, Dr Raj Kumar, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Padmini and P Bhanumati are part of the menu. Special retrospectives in digital editing will be presented by Hollywood film editor Steven B Cohen, while other sections will present sections on restoration of films (by M/s Augustucolor, Italy) and animation and digital effects (UBIK Visual effects, Italy). Meanwhile, Mr Das Munshi today green-flagged the MoU between the government of India and the Goa state government, expected to be signed shortly. Today's met was also attended by Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane and IFFI festival director V B Pyarelal, joint secretary, films, Government of India. This year, Goa will, in addition to handling logistics, hospitality and administrative elements of IFFI, also handle publicity for the festival, ESG CEO Nandini Paliwal told media here. ESG is expected to publicise the festival across India's major cities, she said.
