GCCI HAILS EXTENSION OF TAX HOLIDAY: The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry 
has hailed the Union Finance Minister, Mr Yeshwant Singh, for extending the 
income-tax holiday for Goa till March 2004, which had earlier expired on 
March 30. (NT)

CM TAKES A DIG AT 'PSEUDO-SECULARISTS': In a bid to counter the tirade 
against the BJP over Gujarat violence, the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar 
Parrikar, yesterday said that those who are shouting against the BJP were 
responsible for communal violence. He was speaking at a day-long Kannada 
Sahitya Sammelan at the Kala Academy. Noted theatre personality BP Karanth,

'BJP HAS PUT FARMERS IN TROUBLE', RANE: Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, 
Pratapsing Rane, said that an Andhra Pradesh like situation may prevail in 
the State where farmers have to choose to commit suicide, due to price of 
agriculture products going down. Rane blamed the BJP governments both at the 
Centre and State for putting the farmers in trouble. (H)

CSI-GOACOM AWARD GOES TO ROSARY HIGH SCHOOL: The annual CSI-Goacom Award of 
Rs.20,000 for schools implementing IT most effectively during the academic 
year 2001-2002, was awarded to Rosary High School (Red), Miramar, on 20th 
April. The award was presented by Mr Jerry Menezes, Director of Goacom Insys, 
during the annual gathering of the school. 

PWD GETS AWARD: India has conferred an award on PWD, Government of Goa, for 
outstanding performance in integrated low cost sanitation in the year 2001-02 
during their 32rd annual day celebrations held in New Delhi on 26 April. (GT)

POLL-RELATED SOFTWARE: Drawing inspiration from news analysis conducted by 
the electronic media, the Election Commission of India is also working on an 
election related software package to analyse election related data for the 
forthcoming elections in Goa. (H)

ELECTION MEDIA CENTRE OPENED: Media centre has been set up at the office of 
the Chief Electoral Office at Altinho, Panaji. It is manned by UT Ramnathkar 
and John Aguiar, Media Officials of the Department of Information and

FAKE GOLD COINS: Three persons including a woman sold fake gold coins to a 
lady and cheated her of Rs.85,000 at Borda in Margao, three months ago. When 
the lady approached a goldsmith, the coins turned out fake on verification.

AWARENESS PROGRAMME SKITS: The office of the chief electoral officer has 
arranged skit programme as a part of voters public awareness campaign on 
electors' photo identity cards in various talukas of the State. (H) 

'BOMBAY VIKINGS' FAIL TO TURN UP: The Panaji police have registered a case 
against the organizers of the Stars in Summer in Concert, held at Campal 
parade grounds on Saturday, for cheating the people by failing to present 
'Bombay Vikings' Live in concert. The show was organised by Multidimensions 
and the tickets were sold at Rs.1000, Rs.500, Rs.200 and Rs.100. (GT)

WELFACE SCHEMES FOR EX-SERICEMEN: The State government has approved various 
welfare schemes for the ex-servicemen and their dependents. The benefits 
include medical reimbursement for serious diseases, pocket money for 
cancer/TB/leprosy patients, reimbursement of travel and incidental expenses, 
enhancement of scholarship to the wards of ex-servicemen/widows, 
reimbursement course fees at recognised institutes. (H)

SS CADRES TO CAMPAIGN IN GOA: The Shiv Sena has receive a shot in the arm as 
a large number of Goans working in Mumbai have agreed to come to their 
villages to campaign for their candidates during Assembly elections. (GT)

KANNADA SCHOOLS IN GOA: The Goa Kannada Samaj, which organised a Kannada 
literature and cultural programme in Panjim yesterday, urged the Chief 
Minister to open Kannada medium schools and to set up a Kannada Academy for 
the benefit of Kannadigas residing in Goa. The demand for the construction of 
a Kannada Bhavan was also raised at the function. (GT)

FALSE PROPAGANDA: "Our ancestors knew no other oil except coconut oil and 
they lived for eighty years and above and now with this oil we use we hear 
and see nothing but diabetics, arthritis, obesity, hyper-tension and more 
heart attacks. The same thing was done when it came to common salt. They said 
the use of iodised salt was a must. This play was only to keep their big

TELECOM CABLES VANISH: Forty metres of telephone cables were stolen by some 
unknown persons while they were kept in the open at Mestavaddo, Curti, on 
Saturday. The cost of the stolen cables is estimated at Rs.8000. (GT)

ANJUNA FETE: The well-attended, two-day fete in the compound St Michael's 
church in Anjuna ended yesterday with the scintillating music of band 
'Alcatraz'. Earlier there were other items like exciting fire events by limbo 
dancer Kanan and dance competitions, in which the Saligao group bagged the 
first prize, with Tembi (Anjuna) taking the second. On the previous day, 
there was a singing competition, Konkani entertainment by Young Chico and his 
group, and the programme was rounded up by Goa's top band 'Lynx'. People 
flocked at the several stalls with games (including computer ones by NIIT), 
and those serving delicious snacks, icecream, soft drinks, and homemade 
san'nam-sorpotel, chourico-pao, shawarma, etc. (GoaNOW)
