Subject: [Goanet] Goa model in Gujarat?

BJP may try a Goa model in Gujarat
(Source:India Syndicate)

As the first state to go to polls after the Gujarat incidents, both the BJP
and the Congress had high stakes in the state. And as per indications, the
BJP had gained considerably, although it is more attributed to the failure
of the Congress to tie-up with its ally, the Nationalist Congress Party of
Sharad Pawar. NCP has swallowed a good chunk of the Congress votes in many
constituencies, especially in the northern part of the Goa.

The NCP put up 20 candidates in the 40 member Assembly. The NCP and the Cong
could not agree on a seat, which lead to the break up. Congress has been
affected significantly by this decision.

Some of the major losers of the Congress have been Ramakanth Khalap and
former chief minister Churchill Alemao. A total of 212 candidates contested
in Thursday’s polls. Goa reported 68 per cent voting.

Though the outcome of Goa polls will not have any major impact in the
national level, the BJP is likely to interpret any gains as a vindication of
its stand in the Gujarat issue, and may also follow that up with an early
poll in Gujarat.

It may be recalled that the BJP president Jana Krishnamurthy had said
recently in Baroda that the chances of an early poll in strife-torn Gujarat
cannot be ruled out. But more than the Gujarat issue, it was clearly a host
of local issues including defections. The BJP has clearly gained most in
Hindu-dominated North Goa. But it has also made gains significantly in the
Christian dominated south Goa, which is a major set back for the Congress.

For the Congress, it is clearly time for some inspection as to why despite a
nationwide backlash against the BJP the Congress couldn’t exploit that.
Perhaps the answer lies in this sleepy state itself, where the politics of
defections and power games which the Congress promoted for long, had taken
its toll. So this is more of a negative vote against the Congress.

And if the Hindutva hardliners in the BJP interpret this as an approval of
their politics of violence, the party is in for more surprises.

Thank, Cip.

One result still to come: Valpoi Constituency

Last time round Venkatesh Desai (Congress) won with 4177 votes
Runner-up Narahari Haldankar (BJP) polled 3323 votes

Both are standing again so the odd are on Congress to win and to have the
first crack at forming the next Government.

The real election winner was Sandesh Prabudesai with http://www.goanews.com
even though he let his BJP sympathies show through a few times. His
coverage was quicker and more accurate than the Navhind Times or Herald.
