Mr Christopher Fonseca, state general secretary of CPI revealed that while the national party was dissatisfied with their poor performance, incidentally their maiden attempt, the party hoped to perform better during the next elections which would be sooner than expected due to the fractured mandate given by the voters. However, Mr Fonseca expressed his pleasure over the victory of the CPI, CPI(M) supported United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) candidate, Mr Mathany Saldanha, who defeated Mr Mauvin Godinho (Congress) in the Cortalim constituency. He however lamented "The main issues of increasing poverty and unemployment were sidelined by non-isues which were given prominence. The total breakdown of infrastructure like power and water supply, industrial and agricultural development of Goa took a back seat.
