MORE PORTFOLIOS LIKELY: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar may in all 
probability distribute additional portfolios amongst his cabinet colleagues 
today. According to informed sources, seven ministersthree from the BJP and 
two each from its collation partners, UGDP and MGPare expected to benefit 
from this round of distribution. (H)

AFTER GOA…: Describing the party's recent victory in Goa as a "turn in the 
tide", veteran leader and Union Home Minister LK Advani attributed it to 
"good governance" provided by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and said it 
has raised the morale of party workers and cades across the country. (H)

MAJORDA PANCHAYAT'S BUDGET DELAY: The gram Sabha of Majorda village 
panchayat on Sunday evoked some criticism over the alleged delay in passing 
of the annual budget. The gram Sabha was held under the chairmanship of 
Sarpanch Antonio Pobres Fernandes in the Majorda Club hall. (H)

RS.15 CRORE FOR RIBANDAR BYPASS: PWD Minister Ramkrishna Dhavlikar has 
announced that the Ribandar bypass work will be taken up in the year 
2002-03 at a cost of Rs.15 crore and added that the Ministry of Road 
Transport and Highways has made provision for this in its annual plan of 
2002-03. (H)

STRICT FISHING BAN: The State Government has been very prompt in announcing 
the ban on fishing during the monsoons, which is the breeding season. The 
ban is expected to continue till August 15 in accordance with the interim 
order of the High Court. The likelihood that the order this year will be 
strictly enforced unlike in previous years is strong because of the 
presence in the Legislative Assembly of Cortalim representative Mathany 
Saldanha, who has championed the cause of the traditional fishermen for

SCHOOLS RE-OPEN TODAY: The schools will reopen for the next academic year 
from today. Earlier the schools were scheduled to reopen from 3 June after 
nearly two months of summer vacation. (GT)

ARTIST RAJAN FULARI FOR GLASGOW: The prestigious Link Programme of the 
British Council along with Glasgow Print Workshop, Cymroza Art Gallery and 
JJ School of Arts, has awarded a residential scholarship to well-known 
contemporary artist Rajan Fulari from Siolim-Goa. Rajan was on the visiting 
faculty of the Goa College of Art and has specialized in print-making 
(graphics) at Baroda's MS University. While in Glasgow, he will conduct 
lectures and slideshows on contemporary Indian print makers and the art 
scene in Goa. He  will work at a wellknown print making studio there, 
besides visiting various museums and art galleries and interacting with a 
number of artists in various spheres of art. (GoaNOW)

HEARING ON CONTINGENCY FUND: The first hearing of the petition challenging 
the issue of the Contingency Fund is likely to come up for hearing before 
the Bombay High Court at Panaji today. Earlier the hearing scheduled on 3 
June was postponed by a week. (GT)

MONSOON LIKELY TO HIT STATE: The first showers for this year's monsoon in 
the State is likely to begin from today, predict the Meteorological 
Observatory, Altinho. Though the rains were expected on 7 June, the showers 
seemed to have been delayed due to trough experienced near the Arabian Sea

FATE OF IPHB'S POST GRADUATE STUDENTS: The fate of the post-graduate 
students of the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, Bambolim, 
hangs in balance as the institute is yet to get the recognition by the 
Medical Council of India and the subsequent affiliation by the Goa

ANCIENT CROSS YIELDS SECRETS: An inscription in Persia's Pahlavi language 
on a unique granite cross found by a Pilar Society priest at Dando, 
Agassaim, has been deciphered by an Indian scholar in Rome. The ancient 
cross was noticed on the banks of River Zuari by Fr Cosme Costa. (WE-GT)

CHEAT IN POLICE NET: The Colva police on Saturday arrested one Eloy Gomes, 
a resident of Pirni Bazaar, Verna, on the charge of cheating a woman after 
inducing her to pay Rs.650 as donation for a school building. (GT)

BODY FOUND AT CANDOLIM BEACH: The body of Manikchand Chowdhury, a native of 
Rajasthan, who drowned off Sinquerim beach, was found floating at Candolim 
yesterday evening. (GT)

DROP IN FOREIGN TOURISTS: The tourism industry had to face the brunt of 
Twin Towers tragedy and partially of the Gujarat violence, as the figures 
released by the Tourism Department reveal a 35 per cent drop in the number 
of foreign tourist arrivals. In all 278 charter flights landed in Goa, from 
October 2001 to May this year, bringing in 76,278 visitors compared to 419 
charter flights with 1,16,992 passengers last season. (NT)

TECHNICAL EDUCATION AT KEERTI: Keerti Vidyalaya Technical institute at 
Siolim is the only institute in Bardez taluka which imparts training to the 
students having basic education of Std VIII, while on the other hand even 
to graduates. (GT)

ACCIDENTAL DEATH: The Maina Curtorim police arrested the driver of the 
tanker under which a youth, Anthony D'Mello, had died at Arlem, Raia. (NT)

SANCHAYANI IN DEEP TROUBLE: Nearly one hundred complaints have been 
registered against Sanchayani Finance and Investment Limited for failure in 
paying deposits to its investors. (GT)

TRUCK DRIVES IN TEA SHOP: A tea shop belonging to Kalidas Tari at Ambaulim 
was damaged when a truck, driven by Rohidas Gaonkar (in a drunken state), 
drove straight into it. (NT)

VSNL ISSUE: Recently, the Tatas group of companies decided to invest 
Rs.1,200 crore of VSNL funds in one of its telecom units. This became a 
controversial issue. It may be recalled that the Tatas have only recently 
bought out Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd from the government for a sum of

the CM would find a rational, pro-people critic, a non-conformist, an 
iconoclast and it would be advantageous to the government if Mr Saldanha's

CHRISTOPHER'S OFFICE OPENED IN ASSAGAO: As assured to the voters during the 
recent election campaign, trade union leader Christopher Fonseca has set up 
his office in Assagao. The office was inaugurated yesterday at the hands of 
one of the seniormost, wellknown resident of Assagao, Adv LP Noronha, in 
the presence of several associates and wellwishers. The office will serve 
the people of the Siolim constituency for discussing their problems and 
solving their grievances.
