***** BEACH CLEANING - NIO'S INITIATIVES Asadha 5, 1924 Panaji ---------------------- June 26, 2002 As a follow up to the recently concluded summer course for students on "Know the ocean and its environment", the National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula will hold a short visit to Miramar beach to examine and explain the dynamic response of a beach to the monsoon. The NIO Staff Club with active participation of the Aivao village, will also gather all plastic material washed ashore Aivao (a beach contiguous to Miramar) on Saturday, 29 June from 3 pm. Mr. T. Suresh, General Secretary of NIO Staff Club invites the participants of the summer course and those from surrounding areas to join in this community drive. The Panaji Municipal Council will help to transport and dispose off the gathered material. **** PIB/PANAJI/SVJ/VRG/L- 335 W- 130 PRESS INFORMATION BUREAU GOVERNMENT OF INDIA ***** WORKSHOP ON EARTHQUAKES, SUBMARINE VOLCANOES AND BACK-ARC BASINS Asadha 5, 1924 Panaji ---------------------- June 26, 2002 A one day workshop on " Earthquakes, Submarine Volcanoes and Back-Arc Basins" will be held at the National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula on June 28, 2002.The findings of various R&D activities on seismic activity on the Indian subcontinent and their extensions in the Ocean, will be presented by the scientists of the National Institute of Oceanography( NIO) Dona Paula and National Geophysical Research Institute( NGRI), Hyderabad. Both NIO & NGRI are actively engaged in seismic studies, the former focusing on trenches, mid-oceanic ridges and back-arc basins and the later in earthquake processes and seismic hazard assessment. On this occasion Dr. Harsh Gupta, Secretary, Department of Ocean Development will be felicitated by his well wishers and fellow colleagues, on completion of 60 years.
