BuildArena is a just-launched 'corporate magazine for business, infrastructure and industry'. Its first issue has a comment on GoaNet:
"Even as the state steadily chugs along, we must also acknowledge the 'Other Goa' -- largely existing as an entity of emotions binding the nearly 1.5 lakh Goans settled in various parts of the world. Of late, the hitherto scattered and unorganised Goan diaspora has started to function in unison as a single grouping linked to each other by new means of communication like the Internet. Infact, the exaptriate Goan community is one of the most active on the Internet. One 600 member strong online community called Goanet has initiated a few programmes in Goa, one of which involves providing computers to various schools in Goa. There are others too like the World Wide Goans and the US-based Goa Sudharop Trust. As the world coimes closer, Goans settled abroad can now play an incrasingly important role in the progress of the state...." -- E Michael D'Mello in BuildArena, Inaugural Issue, July 2002 Rs 25 per issue. Earlier, it was said that there were 100,000 Goans in Mumbai and 60,000 in Portugal alone. Maybe these figures are above the actual, but who knows what the actuals are? No survey has ever been conducted. The GoaNRI's Cell functioning leaves much to be desired... and is somewhat politicised. * Goanet's membership figure of 600 seems to be a rather old figure. That used to be our membership a coupld of years ago, if one recalls right. Since then, GoaNews (and Eddie Fernandes' GoaNetUK) have grown significantly, while GoaNet/GoaNetDigest have not grown to potential. * Lastly, the projects have been taken up by individuals who have been networked through GoaNet, rather than by GoaNet itself.... networking itself, and sharing ideas, has its own positive fallouts. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-W-E-B---S-I-T-E-=-=-= To Subscribe/Unsubscribe from GoaNet | http://www.goacom.com/goanet =================================================================== For (un)subscribing or for help, Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dont want so many e=mails?
