When its monsoon, every commuter should take precautions, especially if he is travelling in a private transport meant for the commuters. I request every person who boards a bus not to enter into an overcrowded vehicle for it's just not uncomfortable but also a risk to life. As per my point of view I have seen at the Panjim bus-stand and also at Margao that even when the traffic police instructs the driver to leave the bus from the stand, they (the police) are ignored - such drivers /conductors should be taught a lesson by fining them heavily. I have come across over-crowded mini-buses specially during rush hours, travelling from Old-Goa to Panjim, Panjim-Bambolim, Panjim-Miramar, Margao-Vasco and vice-versa. Once again I request every student and office-going person not to risk your lives - its precious and we should take care of it for someone is waiting for us, who loves us dearly. I also humbly appeal to the PWD and the other authorities concerned to take precaution to maintain our roads. For when water is filled in pot-holes it goes unnoticed to riders and can lead to mishaps. Finally to all vehicle owners ride carefully - lessen your speed and see that your brakes, horn, lights and above all tyres are in good and working condition for it saves life. Dhani Bachmann, 21, who was born in India and adopted by a Swiss family from Lucerne at the age of five, now dons a ceremonial 154 pieces uniform of the Swiss Guards, which is part of the multiple level of security around the Pope. "A lot of pomp and glory surround the tradition of Vatican. The Indian community is delighted that Indian-born Dhani Bachmann has become the first non-white to be selected to Swiss Guards, which has a 500-year-old tradition," John Dayal, national vice president of the All India Catholic Union, told IANS. There are only about 100 soldiers in the Swiss Guards. To qualify, one has to be a Catholic Swiss national, single and at least five feet eight inches tall. Bachmann's current uniform is a simpler form of the medieval garb worn by the Swiss Guards before 1914. "They may be very traditional in their dress code but are modern in everything else including training," said Dayal. Pledging their loyalty and lives to the Pope, the Swiss Guards, founded in 1506 by Pope Julius II, essentially serve a ceremonial role. When the Pope moves in public, they shed their ceremonial dress for plain clothes and join members of the Vatican Police to form a cordon around the pontiff. Since the assassination attempt on the Pope's life nearly 10 years back, the security around him has been tightened. Dayal said while there is no count of the number of Indians serving in the Vatican or in Rome, the highest ranking is Cardinal Lourdusamy. "He is one of the congregation in the Vatican that acts as advisors as well as the executive body. The other two Indian occupying high posts are Cardinal Vidyathil, who is the archbishop of Syro Malabar Church in Kerala, and Cardinal Ivan Dyas, the archbishop of Mumbai," said Dayal. The two are ex-officio members of the collegiums that elect the future pope. Annually hundreds of Indian Catholics go to Vatican for pilgrimage. During the millennium, thousands went on an organised trip for the jubilee celebrations. - -Indo-Asian News Service ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Jul 2002 21:49:10 +0530 (IST) From: Frederick Noronha <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [Goanet] NEWS-MUMBAI: Lawrence D'Souza gets police security after shootout D'Souza might be from Mangalore. There could be other angles, not mentioned below, in the relationship between Bollywood and the dons, particularly over the financing of films. FN Lawrence D'Souza gets police security after shootout By Shiv Kumar, Indo-Asian News Service Mumbai, July 5 (IANS) Police have provided protection to filmmaker Lawrence D'Souza, who was shot at by two people outside his office. Police said till further notice, two armed guards have been posted outside his residence and will guard D'Souza who was shot at by two motorcycle borne men who accosted him outside his suburban office here Thursday. Seeing his assailants, D'Souza fled inside his building and locked himself in a neighbour's house, police said Friday. Police sources said they were suspecting mobster Chotta Rajan's hand in the shootout. Rajan, who made a sensational escape from a hospital in Thailand over a year ago, is said to have returned to terrorising film producers with a vengeance. Police say Rajan, completely overshadowed by Dawood Ibrahim and Chotta Shakeel gangs, may be planning to stage a comeback in the Mumbai underworld. D'Souza, like other filmmakers, had received warnings from gangsters over the years but the threats had got insistent in the past few weeks, sources said. The filmmaker, whose recent films had flopped, is said to be planning a new big budget movie. Traditionally, mafia bosses target filmmakers when a new high profile film is being launched. Apart from cash, the dons also demand rights to release the movies in lucrative "territories". Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan was shot at three years ago after he refused to hand over overseas rights of his "Kaho Na...Pyaar Hai" to an associate of mobster Abu Salem, police sources say. - --Indo-Asian News Service ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Jul 2002 22:27:57 +0550 From: "Casio Marketing Agency" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [Goanet] Exciting adventure of CASIO enters Goa Hello Goanetters, CASIO COMPUTER CO. Goa package holidays from UK Headline: India operators in uproar. Foreign Office advice on India is wrong, say angry tour operators. By: Tom Chesshyre. Source: The Times (UK) July 6 2002. 703 words. Excerpts: Tour operators are furious with continuing Foreign Office advice not to travel to India. They say that popular beaches in Goa and Kerala are thousands of miles from trouble along the Pakistan border in Kashmir — and they want the FO to differentiate between potential strike zones and other parts of the country. At the moment travel insurance companies, which follow to the letter FO advice against “all but essential travel”, will not offer full cover for holidaymakers. This has effectively closed down mainstream tourism to India, as most tourists will not risk travelling overseas without insurance… Individual operators have been more forthright. “It is incredibly unfair,” said Platon Loizou, managing director of Jewel in the Crown, an India specialist. “It is stopping all tourism to India, while Goa and Kerala are miles from Kashmir. “People are still calling in wanting to go, as they know it is safe in the south, but we are getting a fraction of our usual requests. The Foreign Office is putting people off.” He said sales were down by as much as 85 per cent for the coming winter season, which runs from October to May. Jewel in the Crown sent more than 6,500 people to Goa last winter. Ash Sofat, chief executive of Somak Holidays, another Goa specialist, said that sales were down by a similar amount. “The Foreign Office must realise that India is a huge continent,” he said. “The minute the FO advice is lifted bookings will pick up again. But we are running out of time before the season begins.” … Instead of India, many holidaymakers have been booking trips to Mombasa in Kenya, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, and Dubai — which is fast gaining in popularity. Loizou added: “This is destroying tourism in India. The average tourist industry worker in Goa gets £30-£40 a month, and now they will not even be getting that.” Full text at: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,71-346586,00.html **************************************** >From Goanet-UK Newsletter of 5 July 2002 at www.goacom.com/goanet-uk FLIGHT INFORMATION: 27 Jun. Earlier, it was said that there were 100,000 Goans in Mumbai and 60,000 in Portugal alone. Maybe these figures are above the actual, but who knows what the actuals are? No survey has ever been conducted. The GoaNRI's Cell functioning leaves much to be desired... and is somewhat politicised. * Goanet's membership figure of 600 seems to be a rather old figure. That used to be our membership a coupld of years ago, if one recalls right. Since then, GoaNews (and Eddie Fernandes' GoaNetUK) have grown significantly, while GoaNet/GoaNetDigest have not grown to potential. * Lastly, the projects have been taken up by individuals who have been networked through GoaNet, rather than by GoaNet itself.... networking itself, and sharing ideas, has its own positive fallouts. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Jul 2002 10:36:24 +0530 From: "Joel D'Souza" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [Goanet] 06 JULY: GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS 06 July 2002 PUNISHMENT FOR BOUNCING CHEQUES: In a bid to enforce financial discipline, the Union cabinet yesterday cleared a new measure to double the sentence period to two years for bouncing of cheques and for disposal of the cases within six months.
