ZIL SUBMITS ACTION PLAN: The officials of the Zuari Industries Limited
yesterday submitted an action plan to South Goa Collector JB Singh
pertaining to the additional measures adopted by the company to prevent
leakages of naphtha, if any. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had directed
the company officials to submit the action plan. (GT)

UNNATURAL DEATHS RISING: Unnatural deaths appear to be on the rise in the
jurisdiction of the Ponda police station. During the last eight months
alone 77 unnatural deaths have been reported, as compared to 100 such cases
reported last year. With this pace, the Ponda police fear that the number
of unnatural deaths may cross last year's mark. (H)

WELFARE SCHEMES FOR WOMEN: The Government of India is implementing schemes
for women's economic programme to empower women in trades like electronics,
watch assembly, basic and advanced computer training, garment making,
secretarial practice and embroidery through non-governmental organisations
registered under Societies Registration Act 1860. (H)

WORKSHOP ON CHILD-FRIENDLY GOA: The Tiswadi-level Workshop towards
child-friendly Goa, organised by Bailancho Saad along with Child
Development Project Officer, ICDS Programme, mooted a holistic
child-friendly policy and code coupled with a plan of action and an
effective functional State Commission for Children which will monitor the
execution of children-related action by the various Government Departments.
The Workshop was attended by participants ranging from doctors, lawyers,
heads of educational institutions, teachers, Government officers and
representatives of women's and children's rights organisations.

GU EVOLVES TIME-BOUND PROGRAMME: The Goa University has finally evolved a
time-bound programme for conducting of examinations and declaration of
results by mid-May besides linking various departments in the varsity
campus with local area network as a part of its strategy to improve
efficiency in administration. (NT)

RESULT AFTER DEATH: Akshata Prabhu, a student of Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya and
Research Centre, Shiroda, is no more to see her results. The Goa University
declared her results on August 10 and as expected she passed out with
flying colours. Akshata committed suicide on 23 July after being distressed
over the University's decision to keep her results in the reserved category
for the double assessment system. (GT)

GMC HOSTEL IS CRAMMED: With the admission of 100 students for MBBS degree
course last year, the students now face the problem of hostel accommodation
in the Goa Medical College, Bambolim. Earlier, three students would occupy
one room…with the increase of seats, five students were allotted one room.

STUDENTS CONTINUE AGITATION: The agitation of the final year computer
engineering students of Fr Agnel Polytechnic, Verna, against the abrupt
change in the admission procedure, entered the second day yesterday with
the hunger strike. (NT)

FREE TRAINING: Union Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of
India, has selected Agnel Technical Education Complex, Verna, to implement
the scheme of skill development training. All the courses will be conducted
free of charge. (H)

BENCHES FOR MAPUSA BUS STAND: The Panjim City Public Forum has urged the
State government to install benches for the convenience of senior citizens
and women using the shuttle service at Mapusa. (GT)

BENAULIM FINANCE PANEL: Benaulim panchayat has formed two
committees-finance and environment-to oversee the financial transactions
and garbage disposal mechanism. The tentative members of the environment
members are Correa Afonso and Sales Lima Fernandes…Apparently rich Benaulim
panchayat, which reportedly has an annual income of Rs.20 lakh, has some
ambitious proposals for the village. (H) 

CLOUDBURST CLAIMS 33 IN UTTARANCHAL: At least 33 people, including 18
women, were killed and several went missing in a cloudburst that triggered
heavy floods and landslides at four remote hilly villages of Tehri district
of Uttaranchal in the wee hours of yesterday. (PTI report in GT)

NAKED TO APPEASE GOD: Around 200 women from the farming community in the
drought-hit Banke district of Nepal came out naked at midnight to plough
the fields to appease Indra, the rain god. After shutting all windows and
bolting the doors, leaving the male members locked inside the houses, they
performed the ritual which as per Hindu belief would end the drought. (UNI

SNAKE AWARENESS PROGRAMME: The Green Cross, Mapusa, and the Indian
Herpetological Society, Pune, in co-ordination with the LD Samant Memorial
High school, Porvorim, are organising a day-long Snake Awareness Programme
at the Vidhya Prabhodini complex at Porvorim from 9 am on August 14. (GT)
