SC DECLINES TO INTERFERE: In a clear setback to BJP's plans for early 
assembly elections in Gujarat, the Supreme Court yesterday declined to 
interfere with the Election Commission's decision on holding the polls in 
November-December this year and expressed its inability to give its opinion 
on the presidential reference immediately. (PTI report in Herald)

GTDC "GOLMAAL": An audit report into the finances of Goa Tourism 
Development Corporation during its former chairman Vishwajit Rane's tenure 
has revealed misappropriation of funds to the tune of Rs.4 lakh. (GT)

FRAUD IN BANK OF GOA: Irregularities and fraud of bout Rs.20 crore in the 
financial affairs of the Mapusa Urban Co-operative Bank Limited (Bank of

DECISION ON IAS CADRE: The Goa cabinet yesterday deferred taking a decision 
on restructuring the Indian Administrative Service Cadre for the State. (H)

CORPORATION BILL: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday dismissed the 
opposition to the government's City of Panaji Corporation Bill and said he 
would go ahead with holding consultations with people's representative on 
the issue soon. (H)

PILERNE VILLAGERS OPPOSE: The Gram Sabha meeting of Pilerne-Marra village 
panchayat on Sunday unanimously adopted a resolution opposing the City of 
Panaji Corporation Bill 2002 and decided to launch peaceful agitation to 
force the government to withdraw the same. (H)

AGNELO WINS IN CORTALIM: Former Velsao Sarpanch, Agnelo Dias alias Opel, 
has won the bye-election to the Cortalim Zilla panchayat, which also saw 
the defeat of Anti-Meta Strips Citizens Action Committee Convenor, Joel 
Fernandes, and general secretary, Nelson Fernandes. (H)

VELIP WINS: Mr Prakash Arjun Velip got elected from the Fatorpa 
constituency in the Zilla panchayat by-election on Sunday, defeating his 
rival Babu Velip by a margin of 899 votes. (NT)

NAPHTA LEAKS YET AGAIN: The pipeline supplying Naptha fro the Mormugao Port 
to Zuari Industries Limited at Zuarinagar leaked for the third consecutive 
in less than two months. (GT)

DONKEY PROTEST: More than 300 Congress agitators on Sunday took out a 
procession (in Tirupati) carrying a headload along with four donkeys with 
weight tied on their backs. Inscribed on it were the words 'various taxes 
imposed by the Naidu government'. (UNI report in GT)

COP SWINGS TO BHAJANS: Head Constable Durgakumar Shrikrishna Navti, a copy 
for the last 21 years, is set to release his booka compilation of 48 essays 
on bhajans in Goa, which were published in a vernacular daily over the last 
few years. Mr Navti also possesses a Masters Degree in music conferred by 
the Kala Academy. (H)

PRIEST THREATENED: Fr Cajetan Lawrence, a priest at ST Anne's Church at 
Ponda, stated in a complaint to the police that Luis Gomes of Silvanagar 
entered his office with a 'coita' and damaged the table glass, besides 
threatening him. The incident occurred due to a property dispute. (H)

KNIFE WOUNDS: In a near tragic re-enactment of the biblical tragedy of Cain 
and Abel, the Mapusa police said that 42-year-old Jimmy Correa stabbed his 
younger brother, Maria, twice on the abdomen and once on the chest in front 
of their aged mother.(NT)

TO BELGAUM FOR GANESH FESTIVAL: There is a strong bond between Goa and 
Belgaum. Goans visit Mumbai and Pune to witness Ganeshotsav celebrations, 
but majority prefer visiting Belgaum every year for the festival. Local 
hoteliers and the tourism industry are upbeat over Goan visitors to Belgaum

CALANGUTE WANTS PETROL PUMP: With the closure of the only petrol pump in 
the northern coastal beltCalangutethe vehicle owners are forced to travel 
as far as Betim, Porvorim or Mapusa to top off their fuel tanks. (GT)

PACKAGE FOR BEACH SHACK OWNERS: The licence fees for setting up beach 
shacks will be drastically reduced to Rs.10,000 from Rs.25,000 but it will 
be mandatory for owners to install mobile toilets as per the new guidelines 
frames by the Directorate of Tourism, Panaji. In all a total of 180 shacks 
will be permitted on beaches. (GT)

LAND SOUGHT FOR CHARTER HANGAR: The Airports Authority of India has 
proposed to the Indian Navy to provide 15 acres of land around Dabolim 
airport for construction of a hangar for charter aircraft arriving in Goa. 
On an average the charter aircraft remain in a hangar for a period of ten 
to 12 days. (NT)

QUEPEM PARISHIONERS PROTEST: The Parish Council of the Holy Cross Church of 
Quepem is up in arms with another church body, over an age-old place, 
Palacio de Deao, spread over an area of 1,125 square metres, and which was 
built by Fr Jose Paul Costa de Almeida, sometime between 1810 and 1815. (H)

NEED TO RELATE LITERATURE: While speaking at the one-day seminar in Margao, 
noted Konkani poet and writer Ramesh Veluskar has stressed the need to 
relate literature to life. (H)

CITY OF PANAJI IN 2010: "It is a bright morning in September 2010. I have 
just returned by the Pushpak skybus after visiting and interviewing the 
last batch of agitators and activists lodged in the new state central jail 
at Curca, which had been commissioned in 2004. They were sentenced for 
their active participation against the formation of the municipal

CHURCHILL BROS CRASH: Dempo Sports Club avenged their Governor's Club final 
defeat to Churchill Bros Sports Club with a 1-0 win in the third round of 
the Kingfisher GFA Pro-League at Fatorda on Sunday. In Vasco, Haywards 2000 
Sporting Club proved too good for Cabral Sports Club 4-1. At Duler, four 
splendid goals from Irenio Fernandes guided St Anthony's Club, Colva, to a 
deserving 4-2 victory over Fransa Football Club, at Duler in Mapusa.

FOOTBALL RESULTS: Sports Authority of India Hostel and Curtorim Gymkhana 
were involved in a goalless draw while Sirlim SC rained 12 goals over 
Merces Sports Club, who could not reply even once, in the GFA Under 19 
League matches yesterday.

ASSAGAO WIN: In the Under-14 match at the Peddem grounds, Mapusa, Assagao 
HS scored  a facile 4-1 victory against Holy Cross High School, Siolim, 
with strikers Ganesh Shigvand, Sankalp Korgaonkar, Chandrajit Nagvenkar and 
Buddesh Parsekar scoring for Assagao, in the Under-14 Boys Football 
Tournament for schools. In another match St Joseph HS, Calangute, defeated 
St Anne HS, Tivim, 4-1.
