----------------------------------------------------------------------- Documented by Goa Desc Documentation Service & circulated by Goa Civic & Consumer Action Network (GOA CAN)<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- IOC to take up case with Civil Supplies dept today ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The senior marketing manager of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) in Goa, Ulhas Kamat said that he will take up the issue of acquiring the Calangute petrol pump with the Department of Civil Supplies and Price Control today. ...
The closure of the petrol pump almost one year ago has caused umpteen hardships to the people of Calangute, Candolim, Baga, Sinquerim and Arpora and has spurred a boom in black marketing of petrol along the coastal belt. The petrol pump, located near the Calangute market, was closed after failing, for the second time quality control inspections which were conducted during a surprise raid on the pump by IOC officials. Director of Civil Supplies, N B Narvekar yesterday said that the department had received several letters from Calangute citizens seeking respite from the closure of the petrol pump. These letters had been forwarded to the IOC, he said adding that the oil company must take the initiative to solve the problem. He also said that any move to acquire the petrol pump does not fall under his purview. Sources in IOC alleged that the department is feigning ignorance about an application forwarded by the oil company seeking to expedite proceedings to acquire the pump. It has also been revealed that the former licensee, Ligia Goes and IOC are yet to settle outstanding financial accounts between them. Until these accounts are settled there cannot be any move to acquire the pump. Attempts, by this reporter to contact Ligia Goes were in vain. Though the exact picture remains unclear, the only aspect that is certain is that the sale of petrol in the black market has gone up unabated. Sources in the police department say that there had not been raids on illegal hoarders of petrol in the area for the last one month. Meanwhile, vehicle owners in the areas continue to suffer since the nearest petrol pump is almost eight kilometres away and the only other alternative is to buy kerosene laced petrol from the thriving black market. Many in the areas wonder why the authorities are dragging their feet when Calangute is a major tourist destination and having a functioning petrol pump in the area is part of the basic infrastructure required. ------------------------------------------------ GOMANTAK TIMES 4/09/02 page 3 ------------------------------------------------ ======================================= GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 Tel: 252660 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] website: www.goadesc.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Working On Issues Of Development & Democracy ======================================= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-W-E-B---S-I-T-E-=-=-= To Subscribe/Unsubscribe from GoaNet | http://www.goacom.com/goanet =================================================================== For (un)subscribing or for help, Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dont want so many e=mails?
