SAR News Aug. 04, 2002 Freitas Nominated New Anglo-Indian MLA in Maharashtra
Nagpur: SAR News Mr. Victor Freitas, a former SAR News correspondent and member of the Catholic Media Forum, Nagpur, has been nominated to the State Legislative Assembly as a representative of the Anglo-Indian community. Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh, personally conveyed the Governor's decision to nominate Mr. Freitas to the Assembly, August 27. Mr. Freitas is the first Anglo-Indian from the city to represent the community in the Assembly. He succeeds Mr. Desmond Yeats, who was disqualified as member of the Lower House by the Speaker, Mr. Arun Gujarathi, following floor-crossing at the time of a non-confidence motion moved by the Opposition BJP-Shiv Sena combine against the Congress-led Democratic Front Government some months ago. Mr. Yeats had voted in favour of the motion, thus inviting the wrath from the Chief Minister. Mr. Freitas told reporters here that he would work for the social uplift of the Anglo-Indian community during his stint as MLA. "Anglo-Indians nominated to the Legislative Assembly so far have not done much for the community. This is regretful as Nagpur has more Anglo-Indians than in Mumbai. Around 800 families live in this city," he told SAR News. A staunch supporter of 'Vidarbha State', Mr. Freitas believes that the rapid development of 'Vidarbha' region would take place only if statehood was granted.
