VILLAGERS RESOLVE TO INTENSIFY STIR: Citizens of all the villages, which 
are proposed to be included, fully or partly, in the greater Panjim 
Municipal Corporation, ably backed by the Congress Party, took out a huge 
rally in Panjim to protest against the Bill and threatened to intensify 
their agitation from the third week of this month. As a symbolic protests, 
copies of the Panaji City Corporation Bill, 2002, were burnt after the 
rally culminated near the Customs House, Panjim. (H)

VASCO SHUTTLE SERVICES: The mini buses of the Kadamba Transport 
Corporation's shuttle services between Vasco and Panjim will be plying 
between TB Cunha junction in Vasco and Panjim city, from September 9.

BEAT THE GHUMOT BEAT: For some nature lovers, the rhythmic beat of "ghumot" 
this festive season may be a sad reminder that many of the percussion 
instruments in use may have been made by slaughtering a beautiful creature 
from the wild. A recent unearthing of a cache of around 700 monitor lizard 
skins (locally called "gar") at Xelpem, Mapusa, has indicated the existence 
of a rampant trade in selling and making of "ghumot". (WE-GT)

EDUCATION FAILS: Magsaysay winner and Delhi Police Training Joint 
Commissioner Kiran Bedi yesterday called on the teaching fraternity to 
utilise their mind, heart and hands to mould youth into sound character who 
respect moral values in life. She wad delivering a speech on "Education for 
social responsibility" at the Nirmala Institute of Education at Altinho

WORKERS IRKED: The workers of the ACGL company in the bus building section 
at Honda, Sattari, have flayed the companies decision to recruit 100 new 
employees in the company as they felt that the management was working 
against the interest of the company. To boost the company's morale the 
Chief Minister has sanctioned Rs.2 crore as loan to the company besides 
appointing JB Singh as its director. (WE-GT)

CUT DOWN BACKLOG OF CASES: The judiciary and the Bar should work jointly to 
expedite and bring down the backlog of cases pending in the country, the 
amendments are made in the CPC so as to facilitate faster disposal of 
cases, said justice Ferdino Rebello, High Court judge of Bombay, while 
speaking on the topic of "Will the amended Civil Procedure Code lead to 
justice?", at a symposium at the GR Kare College of Law. (WE-GT)

POLITICAL INSTABILITY HITS PLANS: A leading information technology 
entrepreneur and chairman of Wipro company, Mr Azim Premji, said that the 
political instability in Goa has forced him to rethink about setting up an 
unit in the State. Mr Premji was delivering the key-note address on the 
subject, "Value-based leadership in these changing times", as the chief 
guest during the 27th annual general meeting of the Goa Management 
Association held in Panjim on September 7. (NT)

NEW MARKET FOR PANJIM: Should everything go as planned, Panjim could have a 
sprawling new, ultra-modern market complex embodying the current municipal 
market, the adjoining Governador Pestanha Road and the eastern part of the

MAPUSA GEARING UP FOR CHATURTHI: Ganesh Chaturthi festivities in Mapusa are 
all set to begin. The Mapusa market, known to be the biggest in North Goa, 
is literally bursting at the seems with shoppers and a spectacular range of 
fruits, flowers and other Ganapathi-related wares. A spectacular range of 
Ganapathi idols is on display at about 20 different shops in Mapusa. (NT)

THIEVES TARGET WOMEN: From handbag snatching to chain snatching now, 
thieves in Margao seem to have made women their target, specially between 
dusk to dawn. (H)

Panaji corporation bill should have been studied in detail taking the 
councilors, panchas and people into confidence before passing it. This

FOR WANT OF MONEY: 40-year-old Ghauramma Chavan, wife of a coolie from 
Hubli residing at Sanquelim, expired at the Asilo hospital on September 5, 
after a brief illness. Her husband Raju Chavan is running from pillar to 
post to seek financial aid to perform her final rites. (H)

NIGHT VIGIL AT SANTANA: Fr Xavier Mascarenhas, parish priest of St Ann's 
Parish, Santana, Talaulim, and his team will organise the third night vigil 
on September 9. It will start at 8.30 pm and will culminate with mass at

TM COURSES: Opening the doors of Transcendental Meditation to Margao 
residents, the Maharishi Ved Vigyan Bhawan, a charitable institution has 
inaugurated its branch in Margao. Mr S Ramanuzan, administrator of the 
institution, stated that one can practice this technique by sitting 
comfortably at any place. He also highlighted the benefits of

WORKSHOP ON CORAL REEF: The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network South Asia 
node, in association with the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, and 
the Indian Coral Reef Monitoring Network, is organising a 3-day workshop on 
coral reef networking at the Goa International Centre from September 8 to
