Association of Pharmacy teachers of India  7th Convention at Goa

The pharmacy profession began with medical profession. It has now
established as independent profession having an important role to play in
our health care system. Community pharmacy which has been the face of
pharmacy  profession. The branch that began merely as compounding of drug
later on became a science and art of compounding and dispensing
drugs. 

With the rapid industrialisation practically it was reduced just
selling of prepacked medicine. However vertical and horizontal growth in
the medical field created a vacuum between the prescriber (doctor) and
the end user (patient. This resulted in emerging of a branch community
pharmacy.

Today Industrial Pharmacy and Community Pharmacy are two major
disciplines in Pharmacy.

While briefing the press APTI president and advisor to AICTE
Dr. R.S.Gaud  informed that

The important function of the pharmacist is to provide drug information
and advice to the patient. The campaign entitled "Ask about your
medicines" includes :-

* What does this medicine do ?
* How and when should I use it ?
* For How long should I take it?
* May I take other medicines at the same time?

Role beyond 2005 : Stop merely selling start dispensing.

The major  areas of activities includes:-

* Dispensing of the medicines   
* Patient counselling.
* Handling OTC (Over the counter) medicines professionally.

While speaking in a press conference at Goa College of Pharmacy he
informed about the various bodies that regulate the pharmacy education in
the country.

The future of the  pharmacy profession, at least in India lies with
development of this particular branch which in true science will cater
the needs of our health care system. The introduction of subjects
community pharmacy and clinical pharmacy a graduate level of pharmacy
course are indicative of the future trends. 

Survival and growth of any profession much depends upon the educational
systems which harbours it pharmacy education has undergone a phenomenal
changes on the last few decades. The standards of the education at least
on paper are regulated by the council or bodies governing it. 

The Pharmacy act no VIII of 1948 provides for regulation of the
profession and pharmacy practice. The Pharmacy council of India
constituted under the act, makes regulations called the education
regulations prescribing the minimum standard of education. Pharmacy
education which was divided into degree and diploma level.

With promulgation of AICTE act in1988 the  standards  for pharmacy
education are also laid down by A.I.C.T.E. resulting in dual control the
professional standards.

Initially  while welcoming the members of Spokesman for the convention
Mr. M.P.Joshi  outline the objectives of the  association and emphasised
the need for such convection.

APTI

APTI is a constituent association of Indian Pharmaceutical Congress Association. It 
aims at providing a common platform to discuss various issues of pharmacy education 
and identify the current needs of pharma industry and adapt the syllabus pattern 
accordingly. The association honours pharmacy educators and researchers. It imparts 
continuing pharmacy education. APTI is also planning to setup a novel pharmacy 
teachers training institute and undertake consultancies and projects. 

PROGRAM

The seventh annual national convention of Association of Pharmaceutical
Teachers of India (APTI) will be held in Goa from September 20-22,
2002. The theme of the convention is "Pharmacy Education - A Link to
Industry and Community Pharmacy for Better Healthcare." An exhibition of
books, chemicals and instruments will also be part of the
programme. Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA) will offer support for
the entire event. 

Special half-day sessions on "The Pharmaceutical Industry - Opportunities
and Threats" and "Community Pharmacy - Success Through Pharmaceutical
Care Services" are bein vention. The industrial and community divisions
of IPA are associating with APTI for organizing the events. An elocution
competition based on "Need for Specialization at Entry Level of B
Pharm" and panel discussions on "Need Based Education with Values" and
"Future of Small Scale Pharmaceutical Companies in India" are also
highlights of the conference. 

LOC Chairman and the Principal Goa College of Pharmacy informed that Goa
College of Pharmacy which was upgraded after liberation was established
in the year 1842 and infact the oldest Pharmacy college in the country.

The 'Escola Medio Cirurgica de Nova Goa' was provisionally established by
a local Govt. order dated 05th Nov. 1842 and this establishment was
ratified by the Metropolitan Government by decree dated 11the January
1847

The decree of 11/01/1847 approved the organic plan of the school with a
view of developing and executing this diploma, that named it Escola
Medico- Cirurgica de Nova Goa established in the Military Hospital for
the study of the subjects which it was then though should comprise a
Mdico-Sugical and a pharmaceutical course. The former having six subjects
taught for four years by four professors, under the guidance of the chief
physician of the state.

The conference was attended by  Dr. Hukkeri VI -Vice president APTI ,
Prof B.Shivananda  -Secretary APTI,  Mr. Prakshash Sankhwalkar -Chairman
Reception Committee. Mr KV Sawant, Mr B.Y.Karapurkar. Prof. Lilian
Almeida Shri Prashant Bhide  Mrs Maya Bhobe. And several officer bearer
of the LOC.
