GOVT STABILITY: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, on Monday gave 90 
per cent credit for the stability of the government to his cabinet 
colleague, Mr Digambar Kamat, while he himself claimed 10 per cent of it.

GSCB MANAGER ARRESTED: Shashikant Narayan Naik, manger of the Junta House 
branch of the Goa State Co-operative Bank Pvt Ltd, has been arrested on 
charges of corruption and cheating. (H)

CM TO LEAD: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has agreed to lead an all-party 
delegation to Karnataka over the issue of the proposed diversion of Mhadei 
water by the neighbouring State. (GT)

NGOS MAY MONITOR: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said the time has 
come for the government to entrust the NGOs like Parents-Teachers 
Association, Sarvajanik Mandals, Sports Clubs, etc, with the task of 
monitoring and overseeing the implementation of schemes. (H)

MAIDEN RUN OF "BULLET" TRAIN: The Konkan Railway Corporation has set 
December 31 this year as the tentative date for the maiden run of the 
proposed "Bullet" train, technically known as the high speed train, between 
Mumbai and Margao. (H)

MALL PLANNED AT OLD RAILWAY STATION: A massive commercial mall is being 
planned by the Konkan Railway Corporation at the same place where lies the 
dilapidated (old Margao railway) station premises. This commercial arcade 
is billed as the most modern shopping centre, which will be an added 
attraction for tourists too. (H)

TIGER CUB CAUGHT: A month-old tiger cub, apparently moving about without 
its mother, is being nursed at a Forest department rest house at Dodamarg 
after being caught on Goa's border with Maharashtra. (GT)

NO SAFETY ASPECT RAISED: For a change, no written submissions were made nor 
serious objections about the safety aspect raised even as NGOs skipped a 
hearing on a proposed underground pipeline for natural gas from Goa to 
Hyderabad. (GT)

PALACIO DE DEAO LEASE: Fr Benjamin Fernandes, who is at the centre of a 
controversy over the lease of Palacio de Deao, yesterday said he had taken 
the decision in the best interests of the structure and its maintenance. (GT)

MASS LEAVE: Former parliamentarian and senior Congress leader, Mr Shantaram 
Naik, has called upon the State government employees to go on one day mass 
leave if the State government does not restore the Gandhi Jayanti public 
holiday. Mr Naik said that the list of public holidays for the year 2002 
does not mention Gandhi Jayanti as a public holiday. (NT)

BUNGLING GOES ON: The Goa University's bungling seems to be continuing as 
this time it has delayed in giving mark-sheets to Master of Finance 
Services course students. (GT)

TIATR COMPETITION: Kala Academy has invited entries for participation in 
the 28th Tiatr Competition to be held from the third week of November at 
the Dinanath Mangueshkar Kala Mandir, Panaji. The last date for submission 
of entries is 11 October before 4 pm. (GT)

KILLED IN MISHAP: In a hit-and-run incident at Pequeno-Neura in Tiswadi, 
35-year-old Huseina Fayaz Khan was killed on the spot. (GT)

CAN'T GET AWAY: The Chief Minister has said the government will not allow 
any cable or headend operator to edscape from payment of entertainment tax 
and that dues will be recovered from them who have not paid the tax with 
penal interest. (NT)

GUIRIM TRAFFIC ISLAND: A proposal to erect a traffic island, opposite Green 
Park Hotel, Guirim, is pending for the last one year for the failure to 
obtain a clearance from the Ministry of Surface Transport, New Delhi. (GT)

BETUL HODEKARS: Surnamed as Zuvatkars, Kerkars, Wadekars and few even 
Joshis, the "Kolis"fishermen communitywith their houses located along the 
Sal river in Betul, have preserved their fishing tradition. When a boy 
enters teenage he is sent on the canoe and notwithstanding the "sea

"RIVER PRINCESS": The Director of Tourism, the competent authority under 
the Goa Tourist Places (Protection and Maintenance) Act, 2001, has rejected 
the scheme proposed by M/s Salgaocar Mining Industries Pvt Ltd  for the 
removal of the grounded vessel by cutting it into pieces. He said that 
since the site was near the beach, which was a tourist place, the breaking 
of the ship could not be allowed. (NT)

KONKANI AWARD: Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendra, Alto Porvorim, has chosen 
Antonio da Piedade Morais of Veroda, Cuncolim, as the recipient of their 
Jezvit Antonio Pereira Konkani Puroskar for the year 2002, for honest and 
selfless life-time service to promote Konkani at all levels and at all 
times. The award comprises Rs.20,000 in cash along with a shawl and a
