DRY SPELL SCARES PERNEM FARMERS: The farmers in Pernem have expressed fear

must be initiated to help farmers, in case their crops failed, as well as
to help them in the long run. (GT)

CURCA GARBAGE SITE: Panjim Municipal Council's garbage site at Curca seems
to be in the dumps as the pit catering to garbage waste generated in Panjim
is fast getting filled and may not be usable in a year's time if the
authorities concerned turn a blind eye to it. The main problem bedeviling
the site presently is the overload of garbage pouring in from not only
Panjim but Mapusa as well. (H)

to the Madhya Pradesh Sound Control Act was obvious on Tuesday night when a
musical orchestra was held in the premises of the new Porvorim police
station. While the Act bans loud music from being played beyond the
stipulated 10 pm, the orchestra which was supported by amplified music,
started only at 11.25 pm. (H)

was called off yesterday, the working of all the courts in Goa with the
exception of the Panjim Bench of the Bombay High Court, came to a
standstill as the lawyers "abstained" from work observing the "National
Protest Day" as a protest against amendments to the procedural and legal
service laws. (H)

SELF-IMPOSED FISHING BAN: If you happen to pass through Betul village in
South Goa during Ganesh Chaturthi, you will cease to believe that they are
fishermen's settlements. Profession apart, fish would be the most banned
commodity in the houses whose lifeline surrounds this marine creature.
Ostensibly the fish eating and trading community change their course of
life for five days during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. (Rupesh G Samant
in NT)

GANESH OFFERINGS STOLEN: The Mapusa police station has been drawing a large
number of devotees since the last few days, to worship Lord Ganesh. A
middle-aged woman too had been visiting the police station in the afternoon
