TOURISM DEPT, RELIANCE TIE-UP: Goa's Tourism Department has tied-up with Reliance Info.com to market Goa as a preferred tourism destination in general and some 100 hotels in particular, to 10 million people, all for free. Official sources told Herald that discount coupons of 100 select hotels including up-market GTDC ones, are being offered in the "Upahar" booklet being sent to all their one crore share-holders and mobile subscribers and others all over the country. (H) RTO OUTPOSTS RAIDED: A Union Minister intervened, money flew down windows, truck drivers continued to pile on bribes on the counter and Goa Police personnel were found without any incriminating evidence when Crime Branch sleuths swooped down on RTO outposts at Dhargal and Mollem, including an Excise and Goa Police point at Mollem in a surprise raids. (H) UK NATIONAL DROWNS: A British tourist aged about 35 and locally known as Kevin, drowned off Baga beach at around 12 pm on September 19. The Calangute police sent the body for post-mortem to the Goa Medical College, Bambolim. (NT) NOT AVERSE: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stated yesterday that he is not averse to the demand made by Parampai-Madkai residents to hand over the investigations of Tanuja Naik murder to Central Bureau of Investigation. However, he cautioned that once the case is submitted to the CBI, the State government would not interfere further. (GT) FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE: Foot-and-mouth disease has truck the State once again. The outbreak of the virus has been reported from Neturlim-Sanguem and some areas in Canacona. Several cross-breed animals have been affected with the viral disease, the incidence of which was not reported in Goa for over two years now. (GT) VASCO CEMETERY VANDALISED: In a shocking incident, miscreants are believed to have vandalized the St Andrew's church cemetery at Vasco, by desecrating some crosses at the graves. While Vasco police claim to have no knowledge of the incident, the parish priest of St Andrew's Church maintains that "it is not an issue". (H) REBATE TO COST: The Goa Police has accused the former Power Minister, Mauvin Godinho, the then Chief Engineer of the Electricity Department and three others with criminal conspiracy in the power rebate Balaji Rolling Pvt Ltd case causing a loss of Rs.32 lakh to the State exchequer. (H) MAUVIN DENIES: The former Power Minister, Mr Mauvin Godinho, has denied that charges have been frames against him in the Power rebate case or any other of the criminal cases filed against him by the police. (NT) ROW OVER DOLES TO SENIOR CITIZENS: Distributing monthly doles to the beneficiaries of Provedoria sponsored old age scheme from the office of Cuncolim MLA Joaquim Alemao has kicked up a row with the Cuncolim Municipal Chief Officer and a clerk facing disciplinary action from the higher-ups. (H) NO TAKERS: A Central government scheme to provide five kilogrammes of rice as part of wages to labourers has come a cropper as there are hardly any takers for it. (GT) ABOUT PROPOSED GAS PIPELINE: The officials of Gas Transportation and Infrastructure Company Ltd, a subsidiary of the Reliance Group of Industries, allayed fears that the gas was non-poisonous and inflammable. "Proper precautions would be taken to prevent any kind of untoward incidents and as the gas is light in nature, it will disperse in case of a leak," the officials assured. (NT) COURT ACQUITS ACCUSED: The Additional Sessions Judge acquitted Chandrakant Shirodkar of Aivao, Caranzalem, of having killed one Lata Shirodkar at Caranzalem while pointing out several defects in the investigation carried out by the police. (H) LPG HOME DELIVERY OR REBATE: Goa LPG consumers of the petroleum companiesHindustan Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum and Indian Oil Corporationcan now expect home delivery of the gas cylinders and a rebate of Rs.8 on the cylinder price for non-home delivery as a consumer right, states a press release issued by Roland Martins, Co-ordinator of the Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network. (H) NEAR NORMAL RAINFALL: Goa has experienced a seasonal rainfall deficit of only about 24 centimeters till date. This year Goa has seen a very unusual pattern of rainfall, with July experiencing only 30 cms of rainfall while the normal is 99 cms, and on the other hand June saw 144 cms of rainfall against the normal of 79 cms, while August received 15 cms above average. This monsoon season, which culminates on September 30, has seen Goa receiving 211 cms of rainfall, while the normal as on date is 235 cms. (H) KOLIS RESPECT CANOES: The koli (fishermen) community equate the "hodem", as the canoe is commonly known in Konkani, with their mother. That is the reason why they do not enter a canoe with sandals on. "Inside a canoe, it's like a temple for us," said Mr Ramakant Zuvatkar.
