UNIFORM BAN: The Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court has asked the Central 
government to fix a uniform fishing ban applicable to all the states along 
the Western coast. It has further directed the Goa government to take 
stringent action against the violation of the fishing ban in the State…The 
Goa Foundation, in its petition, had pleaded that the ban be imposed 
between 1 June and 31 August in order to protect the spawning period. (GT)

PAY PARKING: Deliberations are on in the Panaji Municipal Council over the 
implementation of pay parking along Atmaram Borkar Road and 18 Rune Road. 
The Council intends to streamline the traffic flow along both these roads. (GT)

KONKANI, MARATHI SET TO BLAST OFF: Goans are being given an 
out-of-this-world opportunity to increase the universal appeal of Konkani 
and Marathi by launching the languages into space…literally. A French 
non-profit group plans to launch the Keo satellite next year. The satellite 
will return to earth after 50,000 years and the group hopes that it will 
give the people of the time an insight into the present day life. (GT)

TERRORISTS STORM GUJARAT TEMPLE: Heavily-armed terrorists stormed the 
famous Swaminarain temple in Gandhinagar on September 24 evening and fired 
indiscriminately killing 44 devotees, including women and children, and 
injuring about 100, triggering panic and tension in communally volatile 
Gujarat. (PTI report in Herald)

KILLED IN MISHAPS: Two persons died on the spot while as many as seven 
persons were injured on Tuesday evening in two separate accidents, 
involving three trucks, in the state. (H)

DRAFT I T POLICY: The State government's draft IT policy proposes to give a 
major boost to introduction of information technology to speed-up and 
qualitatively improve decision-making processes in government. The policy 
proposed setting aside 10 per cent of the total annual outlay of each 
department into an IT account to undertake IT initiatives. (H)

ECO-TOURISM: With over two years having lapsed since the concept of 
eco-tourism kicked off in Goa, one fact remainsthat is, eco-tourism has not 
earned the much deserved attention. Some of the main reason for Goa lagging 
behind on this front is lack of political will and understanding of 
eco-tourism concept besides poor allocation of funds for building up the 
necessary infrastructure. (H)

ASSAGAO PANCHAYAT SHOWS THE WAY: The villagers of Assagao in Bardez were 
proud to be lauded by the Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, among others, 
for having renovated and furnished the Panchayat Ghar at a cost of Rs.4.5 
lakh without approaching the government for funds and subsidies. Sarpanch 
Victor D'Souza said that it was possible with the help of all panchayat 
members and wellwishers. At a well attended function, former headmaster of 
Assagao High School, Ibadullah Khan; Mervyn D'Souza; Pandurang Laximan 
Pokre; Sacristan Assis Conceicao Fernandes; veteran painter of churches and 
altars Fenelanv D'Souza of Badem and outstanding students of Assagao High 
SchoolSushant Parulekar, Supriya Ghatwal and Reema Naikwere felicitated at

MILKING DAIRY FARMERS DRY: A number of dairy farmers in Pernem have 
demanded that the various schemes of the veterinary and animal husbandry 
department launch with the objection of promoting dairy farming should be 
revamped to suit the changing conditions and steps need to be taken to 
improve veterinary services offered to dairy farmers in the State. (GT)

CONG TO INTENSIFY ANTI-CORPORATION STIR: The Congress Legislature Party has 
decided to intensify its agitation against the city of Panaji corporation 
bill and hold programmes from next week. A decision to this effect was 
taken at the Congress legislature party meeting yesterday. (NT)

"GAUM CHALO ABHIYAN": The BJP's month-long "Gaum Chalo Abhiyan" programme 
in Goa begins today. The BJP North Goa District president, Mr Narayan 
Karekar, said that the programme involves BJP leaders visiting the towns 
and villages of Goa in an effort to popularize the government's 
achievements and to take the various government schemes to the people. 
Ultimately, the drive is aimed at increasing the BJP vote bank, Mr Karekar

ANIMAL RESCUE SQUAD LEADER: Two years ago, Amrut Singh of the Animal Rescue 
Squad was commended by the Forest Department for his efforts to preserve 
wild life. Now, he has been asked to return the Wildlife Rescue Squad 
identity card to the Department, the move allegedly stemming from a recent 
dispute over the capture of a snake. (H)

RIVER PRINCESS: The Panaji Bench of the Bombay High Court has made it clear 
that the State government was free to take further action as provided in 
Goa Tourist Places (protection and maintenance) Act, 2001, with regards to 
the removal of "River Princess" lying grounded at Sinquerim-Candolim beach.

ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY MINI-BUS: The Goa Energy Development Agency has handed 
over a 14-seater minibus that runs only on batteries, to the Goa Tourism 
Development Corporation, for testing purpose. The GTDC has given it to its 
Calangute Residency annexe, to shuttle its guests from Calangute to any of 
the beaches along the coast stretching from Sinquerim to Anjuna. (NT)

ZUARI BRIDGE CLOSURE: Zuari bridge will remain closed for vehicular traffic 
from 6.30 am to 9.30 am on 27 October for inspection and recording of deck 
levels. (GT)

SUFFOCATING ATMOSPHERE: Besides the killing of animals in the area every 
alternate day the garbage dumped by the Ponda Municipal Council in the 
neighbouring Curti-Khandepar village, has forced the teachers to shut all 
windows at a school in Ponda and teach students in a suffocating atmosphere 
the entire day. (H)

THEFTS IN MAPUSA: A spate of robberies have been reported over the last few 
days at Mapusa. (GT)

DR JACK SEQUEIRA'S BUST: The Panjim Municipal Council on Tuesday 
unanimously approved a proposal for erecting a bust of Dr Jack Sequeira, 
popularly known as father of Goa's Opinion Poll, opposite the Military 
Hospital, Campal. (H)

PATRICIA PINTO FOR CANADA: Ms Patricia Pinto, a municipal councilor of 
Panjim, has been invited to participate as a panelist at the two-day 
workshop on "Gender Equality and Local Governance" to be held in Canada on 
September 26 and 27 by the International Centre for Municipal Development 
of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities in association with the City 
of Gatineau, Quebec. She will also deliver a talk at the University of 
British Colombia, Vancouver, on "Making Democracy Work in GoaNew 
Experiments in India's Local Government System". (H)
