GOA VHP GIVE CALL FOR BANDH: The Goa unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, 
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Goa University Students Council have 
appealed to the people and students to participate in the Bharat bandh 
today, in protest against the gunning down of 30 devotees at the Akshardham 
temple complex at Gandhinagar, Gujarat on Tuesday. (GT)

COPS ON HIGH ALERT: Police patrolling will be stepped up and khaki presence 
near sensitive areas would be intensified, specifically in view of the 
Vishwa Hindu Parishad sponsored band today. (H)

ESSENTIAL SERVICES EXCLUDED: Essential services like milk and medicine will 
be excluded from the bandh. (H)

WIDOW STABBED BY INTERNET BOYFRIEND: Sources say that a 47-year-old widow 
from Siolim, was allegedly stabbed by one Ivor D'Souza, a resident of 
Goregaon, Mumbai, in her bathroom, apparently to rob her of Rs.15,000 plus 
her jewellery. The accused tried to stab her on the throat with a knife. 
Her screams brought the neighbours, who overpowered the accused. (GT)

CASE AGAINST PACHECO: Mrs Maria Angelica Coelho, owner of the shack which 
was allegedly burnt down at Betalbatim on 3/4/2002 by Micky Pacheco and 20 
others, has demanded immediate completion of the investigation of the 
criminal case and filing of charge sheet against Mr Pacheco and others. In 
a legal notice sent by her legal counsel Aires Rodrigues to the Chief 
Secretary and the Director General of Police yesterday, Mrs Coelho 
expresses dismay at the police dragging their feet in filing the charge 
sheet and alleges that Mr. Pacheco is misusing his office to ensure that 
the police close the case registered against him.

BABUSH'S CASE: The hearing of the case pertaining to framing of charges of 
extortion and cheating against Atanasio Monserrate (Babush), Minister for 
Town and Country Planning, has been adjourned for one month on the request 
of the complainant Oscar D'Souza. (H)

MULTI-RELIGIOUS SOCIETY: Bharatiya Janata Party's month-long "gaon chalu 
abhiyan" got off to an impressive start in the Catholic dominated Velim 
constituency with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar assuring the minorities 
of the party's commitment to a multi-religious society. "The variety in 
religions need to be maintained," he said while speaking at a function held 
in Dramapur village in the Velim Assembly segment. (H)

HEAD CONSTABLE CRUSHED TO DEATH: In the third fatal mishap involved a truck 
in the past 24 hours, Arjun Pandurang Palyekar, a head constable attached 
to the Goa Reserve Police, was crushed to death on Wednesday, after he was 
run over by a tipper truck along the national highway at Carasvaddo in 
Mapusa while he was a pillion rider on a motorcycle driven by his colleague 
Umesh Dhavjekar. (H)

YOUTH MEETS WATERY GRAVE: A 23-year-old youth, Ajith Singh, from Mumbai, 
drowned in the sea at Khobravaddo, Calangute at around 6.30 pm yesterday. (NT)

NOORANIS FAIL TO IDENTIFY SUSPECTS: Businessman Noorani and his son at 
whose residence dacoits had struck recently at Aquem, Margao, and robbed 
them of jewellery and cash worth Rs.6 lakh, failed to identify the suspects 
arrested by Islampur police, Kolhapur. (GT)

MID-DAY MEALS FOR SCHOOLS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the 
government would implement mid-day meal to school children by the eyar end. 
Parrikar was speaking as the chief guest after inaugurating the renovated 
panchayat house at Assagao, Bardez, on September 24. (H)

AGAINST DIVERSION OF MHADEI: Only strong and united struggle against 
diversion of Mhadei river can stop the sinister designs of a sate like 
Karnataka, which even violates Supreme Court directives on the issue of 
releasing Cauvery water, cautioned nationalist Congress Party leader 
Nilkanth Halarnkar. The "Osmitao Jyot" of Konkani Bhasha Mandal's Goa Yuva 
Mahotsav was lit by Halarnkar at the martyr's memorial of Bala Mapari in

MARINE BOATS FOR COPS: The Goa police have acquired four marine boats to 
clip the wings of smugglers, anti-social activists, violators of fishing 
band and anti-national activists. The long cherished dream of the Goa 
police has finally been fulfilled with the setting up of a separate Marine 
Police Cell headed by the Deputy Superintendent of Police and Mapusa SDPO, 
Mr Allen D'Sa. (NT)

PRODUCER DISCHARGED: Judicial Magistrate First Class, Margao, has 
discharged the producer of Shrusti Vision, Rajendra Talak, in connection 
with a criminal case filed by noted Konkani singer Ulhas Buyao for alleged 
copyright violations of the song "Chandneache Rati". (H)

SHY OF GOA: Lack of political will and inconsistent polices have taken the 
toll of the IT sector in Goa, feel the experts. Thanks to the State 
government's recent action of stirring the topic through IT policy, a 
thinking process has started about how to really go ahead to promote the IT

THEFT IN CHINCHINIM: Valuable documents and cash of Rs.1,800 US dollars 
were stolen when burglars broke into the house of one Anthony Dias at 
Dandevaddo in Chinchinim in the wee hours of Monday. (H)

TOURISM POTENTIAL AT SELAULIM: Surrounded by wildlife, the idyllic 
picturesque spot at the Selaulim dam is about 12 kms from Curchorem and 2 
kms from Sanguem town. The Tourism department had declared this dam as a 
tourist spot some 13 years ago, but till date the department has not taken 
any steps to improve this tourist spot. (H)

ISARELIS WANT RE-OPENING OF TOURISM OFFICE: While Israeli charters are all 
set to arrive in India for the first time and be a part of tourism related 
activities in Goa from October 28, Israelis feel the Government of India 
tourism office should be re-opened in Tel Aviv for better promotion of 
India in that country. This request has come from a 7-member team of 
journalists from Israel currently on a brief visit to India for a 
first-hand experience of tourism in Goa. (H)

MOST PREFERRED DESTINATION: Over 1,000 up-market Israeli tourists will be 
visiting Goa this tourist season. In an interaction with the local media at 
Betalbatim on Tuesday, the Israeli media personnel revealed that the people 
in Israel are always looking out for a new destination to spend their 
holidays. They said that the low income Israeli tourists, who have visited 
Goa on earlier occasions, travel on their own and prefer to stay in any

doctor of Philosophy in Economics, by the Department of Analytical and 
Applied Economics, Utkal University, Vani Vihar, Bhubaneshwar, Orissa. The 
topic of his research was "A Socio-Economic Analysis of Mining Industry: A
