BID TO RAPE MINOR: In a case of attempt to rape, a 15-year-old boy tied the hands of a six-year-old girl and tried to outrage her modesty at the school campus on the occasion of Saraswati Puja on Wednesday in Ponda. (GT)

PIO CARD SCHEME: The Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi, has introduced the Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) Card Scheme 2002 from September this year. The PIO card is issued to an exceptionally eminent person of Indian origin, who plays an important role in building bridges between India and the country of his or her adoption. Holder of this card will require a separate visa to visit India.

GOOD SAMARITAN: Medeni Sandeep Naik Kandolkar of Sangolda working as a nurse in the GMC, lodged a complaint stating that her mangalsutra worth Rs.15,000 was lost, between Porvorim and Sangolda. Later in the evening Meni Bandiwad of Porvorim delivered the mangalsutra to the police station, stating that she had found it near the Porvorim bazaar as she was waiting for the bus. (H)

HIDDEN SCANDALS: The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Nirmala Sawant has charged the BJP government of rampant corruption saying a number of hidden scandals will come to light in the days to come. (H)

POWER SCAM HEARING: The hearing of the Balaji Rolling Mills Pvt Ltd power rebate matter involving former MLA Mauvin Godinho has been adjourned till December on the request of the State. (H)

TOURIST DROWNS: Vianayak Babu, 25, a student from Bangalore died due to drowning off Bogmalo beach when he went for a swim, on Wednesday evening. (GT)

CRUSHED TO DEATH: George Mathai, a 50-year-old man of Cortalim, was killed when a truck ran over him at Chicalim yesterday afternoon.

BODY FOUND: The dead body of an unknown male person was found at the Kadamba bus stand, Mapusa, at 9 am yesterday. Mapusa police said that the man was decently dressed and appeared to have died in his sleep at the bus stand. (NT)

SHIRODA CRIES: The village Shiroda in Ponda is constantly hit by irregular water supply and frequent power cuts. The residents of Torl, Soncrem, Ganvdongor, Satore, Karai, Vazem, Haldai, Moll and places surrounding have been receiving irregular supply of drinking water for the last couple of days. After a few houses received unhygienic impure water, locals are scared to use it as it might cause serious health problems. (GT)

THEFT OF ANTIQUE: Following the arrests of two menRamkumar Chauvan and Badal Pandeyand the recover of a stolen ivory statue of Jesus Christ worth about Rs.40,000 from them on October 16, the Mapusa police yesterday arrested a third man (Anil Chowdary) from the same gang of antique thieves. (NT)

EM TECHNOLOGY: The need to popularize the Effective Microorganisms technology, which is known as "Em Technology" was stressed at a workshop-cum-meeting held at the Pilar Seminary farm on October 17. Dr Shinji Takara, a Japanese expert who made a short visit to the State, briefed the participants on this frontier technology which is spread in over 92 countries including India. It was also mentioned that this eco-friendly technology can effectively take care of the garbage as is being done in Pune. (H)

SHANTA FOR UK: Shanta Anand Desai, a lecturer in Science, Institute of Shipbuilding Technology, Bogda-Vasco, recently left for UK to pursue higher studies in nanoscale science and technology at the University of Leeds. Daughter of Anand and Anuradha from Verna, Shanta, who has an excellent academic record, completed her studies in Goa with flying colours, bagging the prestigious scholarships by the Department for International Development as also the Tetley and Luption Scholarships for studies. EXHIBITION AT ART CHAMBER TODAY: The 2002 art season takes off today at the Galeria de Belas Artes of the Art Chamber at Calangute with an exhibition of digital photographs by Ms Shiva Sanjari and Ms Maryam Enayati, two budding artists from Iran.
