This is absolutely true. Just a storm in a teacup by some of us and not a rebuttal of the author's attempt to glamourise the Goan identity. Why flog a matter that is so petty I cannot understand. We seem to be concentrating on banalities as usual.

How do we respond when people call us Goanese? Today, many Goans avoid meat and pork in particular. I for one have refused Bebinca as it should be called cholesterol. Who are the ones who feel that we have a Goan culture? We dress in western clothes, dance like westerners, drink like we are not Indian, speak English and listen to Western music and think we have a culture. I admire the poor Kunbis and the Gaudis who have some semblance of a culture.

I remember a time when we used the word Konkno for Hindus when we ourselves came from the Konkan coast and were Konkanis.

Rico has been trying to provoke a debate on this issue all over again. I believe much has been said and re-said on this forum on this in the past. Is it worth repeating all over again? This constant worry about identity seems to be a hangover of centuries of colonialism. I shall only take the opportunity to repeat that language (Konkani) has to remain the soul of Goan identity and as a rallying point for other Konkanis if they wish some time to join Goa to form a new political entity!
