NORMS FOR DRIVING LICENCES: The government will shortly adopt stringent norms for issuing licences to two and four wheeler riders and to regulate and monitor the driver training schools in the State…Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar emphasized the need for drivers to respect human life, private and public property. ON-LINE DRIVING LICENCES: The Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, on Friday said that the proposal of issuing driving licences on-line would go operational by March 2003. Parrikar was speaking at the International Road Safety award ceremony at Cidade de Goa. (H)

QUALITY POWER FOR GOA: Speaking to reporters at Hotel Marriott in Panaji, Union Minister of State for Power Jaywantiben Mehta yesterday expressed confidence that Goa will attain centre of excellence in power sector with uninterrupted and quality power by year 2003. (GT)

POLICE HEALTH IS POOR: Psychiatric illness, obesity and a wide range of addictions are some of the ailments affecting police personnel in the State, according to the police medical officer Dr Vedpal Tari. Dr Tari reveals his findings after being attached to the department for over the last year and a half. (H)

"SEIZE MOHP SOCIETY RECORDS": Executive magistrate (Mormugao) Anthony D'Souza has issued order to PI Vasco directing him to seize and attach documents and records of MOHP Labour Co-operative Society and hand over the same to administrator UN Gaonkar. (GT)

HILL CUTTING CASE: The Maina-Curtorim police have registered a case against unknown persons on charges of illegally leveling a huge portion of a hill at Curtorim, following a complaint lodged by the Town and Country Planner James Mathew. (H)

SARDINE GLUT: There is a glut of sardines and the demand has crashed to an all-time low. The boat owners and fish contractorsapparently finding the going tough, have found a way out: tones of sardines netted by the fishing boats (in south Goa) are dispatched to the Betul plateau where the fish is dried for sale to the poultry feed sector. Information suggests that on an average around 60 to 70 tonnes of sardines are taken to Betul plateau for drying. (H)

ANTI-EROSION WORK: The nightmarish days spent by the resident of Talpona, living on the coast of the Arabian Sea in Poinguinim constituency, are soon going to wane over as the work of anti-sea erosion measures by the Water Resources Department has finally begun. (H)

AGRICULTURE IN GOA: ICAR Complex director VS Korikanthimath has stated that at the time of Liberation 63 per cent of the people in Goa were into agriculture. "The figure is now a mere 23 per cent," he said while addressing students of schools in Gaondongrem, on the prospects of farming as an enterprise for youth in Goa. (H)

VEGETARIAN SOCIETY: The Vegetarian Society held its monthly meet at the Youth Hostel, Miramar, recently. Secretary of the Society, Noelyn Santos Afonso welcomed the participants. (H)

BOOK RELEASE: Noted Indian writer Githa Hariharan will release "A Rainbow and a Star: Poems and Stories", a collection of late Dr Tithi Tavora's writings, on November 23 at the International Centre, Dona Paula, at 6.30 pm. The late Dr Tavora was a well-known figure in her professional circle of doctors and patients in Panjim.

HERITAGE FESTIVAL: Tourists and locals alike will be able to savour the sights and sounds of the city's Campal Heritage precinct at the Heritage Festival on 26 and 27 November. The festival, organised by the Goa Heritage Action Group, Panjim Municipal Council and Tourism department will feature a series of live dance and music performances, academic sessions and exhibitions held against the backdrop of Campal's heritage homes. BRITON'S GOA WALK: Justin Jay Moore from London will undertake a week-long walk along Goa's coast from Pernem's Tiracol Fort on the coastal border with Maharashtra to Polem bordering Maharashtra in Canacona, next week, to raise funds for the Children Toy Foundation, to help the Foundation set up toy libraries in hospitals, orphanages, jails, slums, etc. (GT)

FATAL FALL: Pedro Monteiro (55), a toddy-tapper from Chircunolim, Cacora, died after a fall from a coconut tree while he was tapping it yesterday morning. (GT)

BODY FOUND: The Mapusa police yesterday morning found a body of an unidentified male person, aged between 45 to 50, from the verandah of an unoccupied house at Morod, Mapusa. (NT)

BOY DROWNS: Namdeo Jhalmi, a 16-year-old blind boy, drowned in a pond at Khazan-Veling, Ponda, yesterday evening. (NT)

REASONS FOR CONVERSIONS: He (Dr BR Ambedkar) believes that the mass conversions, particularly of the lower caste Hindus and Dalits, to another religion, be it Islam or Christianity or as he would prefer, Buddhism, are out of a low caste or Dalit community's backlash against the domination and exploitation by the high caste Hindus. BRUNO FELICITATED: Goa's second (football) Arjuna awardee, Bruno Coutinho, was yesterday felicitated at the hands of vice-president of India, Mr Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, before the NFL opener at Fatorda. Bruno was also warded Rs.25,000 and a medallion on behalf of the GFA and a cheque of Rs.5 lakh from the Goa government. (NT)
