"BIG FIGHT" IN BENAULIM: Benaulim village is bracing up for the no trust
motion against Sarpanch Meena Leitao scheduled on November 19. the motion
has been tabled by the six-member Churchill backed group against Meena, who
incidentally was elected to the hot seat by the same group 10 months
ago…Sources said the Churchill-led group was peeved at the way the Sarpanch
supported an Opposition moved motion, which was defeated later, to allow
the Tourism minister visit the panchayat office. (H)
TENSION IN SHIRODA: Tension gripped Chikangal village in Shiroda moments
after the body of 14-year-old Sucorro Estibeiro Vaz, who went missing since
Saturday, surfaced in a nearby pond. Sucorro, who was accompanied by one
Gurudas Gaonkar of the same village, had gone to catch a tortoise at the
village pond. Gurudas returned home a little later and was absconding since
then. Suspecting foul play, irate locals rushed to the residence of Gurudas
and set it on fire, destroying several household items. (H)
MATKA SHOULD BE STOPPED: Playing of "matka" reflects moral and social
degradation of an individual and thus needs to be crushed with an iron hand
by the State government by breaking the nexus between police and matka
bookies, opined Union Civil Aviation Minister Shripad Naik. (GT)
WESTERN GHAT PROGRAMME: Scientists and delegates deliberating on soil and
water conservation measures for the Western Ghats region in Panjim have
strongly urged the country's policy-makers to retain the Western Ghat
development programme. (H)
CONFERENCE ON "UNIVERSAL KNOWLEDGE": A five-day international conference on
"Universal Knowledge" will be held in Goa from November 25 to 29 at the
Fort Aguada Resort, Sinquerim, by the UNDL Foundation, a United Nations
Organisation. (H)
NEW DRIVING TEST: From 14 November 2002, a major change has been introduced
to the driver theory test, since research has revealed that a driver's
ability to anticipate and to spot developing hazards is correlated with
experience. It was further revealed that novice drivers perform worse on
test of hazard perception than do the experienced drivers. (GT)
SOFTWARE FOR LANGUAGE: The UNDL Foundation, Geneva, with the help of the
Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, is developing a software programme
which will translate any global language into a machine language, which in
turn will bring the world together. Ashok Mishra, director of IIT claims,
"We have already initiated with first three Indian languageKonkani, Marathi
and Hindi as a priority." (H)
FACE-LIFT FOR CAMPAL: Mr Sanjeet Rodrigues, the Chief Officer of Panaji
Municipal Council (PMC), informed that work was being undertaken on war
footing to give a facelift to the Campal area, in view of the forthcoming
Heritage Festival 2002, organised by Goa Heritage Action Group, in
collaboration with PMC and the Department of Tourism. (NT)
NON-CONVENTIONAL ENERGY: Power Minister Digambar Kamat pointed out that
Goa's power requirements would be to the tune of 60,000 mega watts in the
next ten years and that the State would not be in a position to either
produce or import the power. "In such a situation, we should make efforts
to supplement the power need with the non-conventional energy sources," he

BEHAVIOUR OF PARENTS: At the recently held one-day workshop "Voices of
Goa's Children" organised by the Department of Women and Child Development
and Nirmala Education Society, Childline, the children came out with strong
demand for ban on sale of alcohol, parents should stop shouting, beating
and blaming children for their problems. (NT)
FILMS ON GOAN SINGERS: Goan audience will have an opportunity to witness
rare films on Goa's popular singers of yesteryears like Moghubai Kurdikar
and Jyotsna Bhole, while listening to the voices and memoirs of eminent
personalities like PL Deshpande, Vasant Sabnis and others during the
three-hour long programme "Anant Yatra" to be staged in Goa. (NT)
EXPORT ROUTE FOR GOAN FRUITS: The corridor for exports of exotic varieties
of Goan fruits and vegetables into European markets has opened with the
stock of such goods from Karnataka and Maharashtra having taken off to
United Kingdom from Dabolim airport on September 17. (GT)
ROBIN'S LAST JOURNEY: The mortal remains of veteran Konkani tiatrist Robin
Vaz were laid to rest at the Navelim cemetery in the presence of his
grieving wife Yvette and daughters Audrey and Bernice besides several of
his colleagues and a large number of fans and wellwishers. While the body
left the Shirvodem chapel, where the funeral mass was held, the band struck
Robin Vaz's most popular song "Gaddi ghevn zatrek hanv vetam" which he had
composed and sung in the Konkani movie "Sukhachem Soponn". Fr Joao Pedro
Fernandes, Parish Priest of Grace Church, who officiated at the funeral
mass, spoke highly of the deceased artiste, particularly on account of his
religious plays like "Rochnnar" and "Fatima Saibin". Fr Fernandes said that
Robin's plays were always educative in nature and that he used the tiatr
medium mainly for the upliftment of Konkani language and Goan culture. (GoaNOW)

Goa's premier website www.goacom.com was launched by Dr Wilfred de Souza,
the then Deputy Chief Minister of Goa. The website, funded largely by NRI
Goans, has matured over the years and added a number of interesting
features besides hosting some NGO sites and magazines like monthly "Goa
Today" and weekly "V Ixtt" (Konkani). It reaches the Goan community spread
all over the world daily through the news clippings and other reports
posted from Goa, Canada, England and elsewhere.
