WATER WOES MAY CEASE BY 2004: People of Bardez, Tiswadi, Ponda, Bicholim and Sattari can heave a sight of relief as the State government has worked out three separate schemes which will provide at least 12 hours continuous water supply from March 2004. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar disclosed that an approval had been granted to schemes for water development in Assonora, Khandepar/Kaley river basins for water supply and irrigation purpose for the next 30 years. DYSP THORAT PLAYED DIRTY: The authority appointed to conduct the preliminary inquiry into the complaint of assault and abuse filed by a city based businessman against suspended SDPO & DySP Panaji Shirish Thorat has shortlisted glaring procedural irregularities by the police officer in dealing with the case. (GT)

WHILE POLICEMEN GET PUNISHED: While hurriedly suspending DySP Shirish Thorat, the state Home department has conveniently turned a Nelson's eye to a serious offence, which had quite literally stumbled out of a closet in a city hotel. A written complaint of a 17-year-old girl from Salt Lake, Calcutta, stating that she was forcefully kept in the hotel room for more than two months, has been virtually ignored and seems 'buried' by the police, as well as the Home department. EDUCATION AID FOR DISABLED KIDS: CM Parrikar said that a scheme has been approved to provide educational opportunities to disabled children through special schools or common schools as also to facilitate their retention in the regular school system for overcoming their handicaps and ensuring their all round development. (H)

GOA TOPS IN INVESTMENT CLIMATE: Goa tops the list among a cluster of 15 small states and Union Territories in investment climate, and is placed third in overall development in a composite ranking by the Confederation of Indian Industry recently. The ranking is based on parameters such as general achievement, investment climate, penetration of infrastructure, finance, work force quality, social environment, mass media, agriculture, personal finance, law and order and consumer goods. NATURAL LAKES FOR IRRIGATION: The Opposition Congress yesterday called for increased efforts to restore the numerous natural lakes for irrigational purposes during the rabi season in lieu of the water scarcity this year. (H)

CO-OP SOCIETIES RUNNING IN LOSS: If co-operative societies felt that the Co-operative Week was meant to sing their praises, they were in for a rude shock. Co-operative minister Vinay Tendulkar went on the offensive by stating that most of the 2,000-odd co-operative societies in the State are running in losses. (H)

"CAPSULE POSTS": In a bid to protect officers in the Vigilance department from the "hit range" of those whom they have investigated, the government has created some "capsule posts" for their benefit. The posts are mostly for officers on deputation to choose the department of their choice when the term of their posting in vigilance expires. (GT)

EXTORTION BID: In a case of attempted extortion, one Praveen Satem was caught red-handed while demanding Rs.2.5 lakh from a city businessman, Paresh Mehta. (GT)

MID-DAY MEAL FOR KIDS: The mid-day meal for primary school children is all set to begin from January 2003 as the department of Education has chalked out a menu of cooked food items to be provided under the scheme. The four items include a vegetarian cake, groundnut chikki, bessan laddoos and bun, to be provided to around 27,000 children from 608 government and aided schools between Std I to IV. (H)

CHARGE OVER SHACK: The Tourism minister Mickky Pacheco refuted allegations leveled against him that he was favouring an "outside" to set up a shack at the Palolem beach. (GT)

BLOWS AT FARMAGUDI FEST: The inter-collegiate festival bean at Farmagudi-Ponda on Thursday, attracting cultural groups representing colleges from all over the State. However, some students brought in alcohol and within a short time, two groups of students from colleges in Panjim began heated arguments and then began exchanging blows. (H)

NOTICE TO PARRA SARPANCH: The Directorate of Panchayats has issued a show cause to the Parra Sarpanch in connection with the construction licence issued to Claudio Michael D'Souza for the construction of a residential building and compound wall in Jackni vaddo, Parra. (H)

SHENOI GOEMBAB JUBILEE: The State government has approved the constitution of the committee for celebrating the 125th birth anniversary of noted literary scholar Shenoi Goembab. The chairperson of the committee is Dr Maria Aurora Couto and other vice-chairpersons include Mathany Saldanha, Tanaji Halankar, Pundalik Naik, Shyam Verenkar, MS Prabhu and Fr Freddy D'Costa. (H)

DULER FETE: Anthonian Past Pupil's Association, Mapusa, will hold their annual fete at St Anthony's High School ground, Duler, from December 6-8 pm at 4.30 pm. The funds raised will be channeled towards helping the marginalized and underprivileged school children. (H)

"SERENATA" AT CLUB VASCO: Black & Gold will present a musical event "Serenata" at Club Vasco da Gama in Panaji on November 23 at 8 pm. The event will feature Emiliano da Cruz and his Cabaleros and Belinda Fernandes. Among the highlights of the evening will be the sale of the Portuguese dish "Bacalhao". (GT)

JAZZ CONCERT: Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Kala Academy will be organizing the concert of "Jazz Music" by Lydia Van Dam and her quartet from Netherlands at the open air auditorium, Campal, on November 25. Lydia Van Dam is one of the leading ladies of jazz in the Netherlands. (H)

KONKANI SONGS: "Goan Bollywood Halwa", a Konkani songs album by Lawry Travasso, Konkani singer, was released at the hands of Arnold D'Costa, writer, director and producer of Konkani film "Kanteantlem Ful" at Gomant Vidya Niketan Margao, recently.

CSI'S I T QUIZ: The annual CSI Goa Chapter Higher Secondary Schools IT Quiz, for students of Higher Secondary institutions, is scheduled for 30th November at Damodar College in Margao, Goa, from 2 pm to 5 pm. This year's Quiz Competition will also test the knowledge of Higher Secondary students in current IT topics. GRAND DOG SHOW: The recently formed Kennel Club in association with the Indian National Kennel Club and the Department of Husbandry and Veterinary Services, will bring to Campal over a hundred high-pedigree dogs, from the mighty Great Dane to the miniature Pinscher, from various parts of the country for a grand dog show on November 24, from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. "My Dog", a painting competition for children upto 15 years of age, will be held on the occasion. The show will also feature child handlers. (GoaNOW)

ANTONIO'S PAINTINGS AT GITANJALI: The exhibition of the beautiful paintings of the Kenya-born painter of Goan origin, Antonio E Costa, will go on show at Gallery Gitanjali situated at 31 January Road, Panjim, at 7.00 pm on 23 November. Art lovers, who have already been thrilled at his paintings exhibited earlier this month at the Fundacao Oriente gallery, will be greeted with another unique dimension of Antonio's creativity in mixed media at the forthcoming show. POWDER PAINTINGS: Mozambique-born young artist from Lisbon, Francisco Xavier Menezes, who is on a scholarship with Fundacao Oriente, Goa, will exhibit his creative work at the Kala Academy, from 25 till 30 November. The exhibition of the rare paintings, executed in a special technique of painting with powder colours and partially with iron, will be inaugurated by veteran painter Vamona Navelcar on 25 November at 6.30 pm. A graduate of the Universidade de Belas Artes, Lisbon, Francisco has participated in several exhibitions in several places around the world. (GoaNOW).

LIBRARIAN PAR EXCELLENCE: Says Maria de Lourdes Bravo da Costa Rodrigues, who holds a Masters in History and a degree in library science, is a Grade I librarian at the premier government state libraryCentral Library in Panjim, "Today Goa has gathered importance not only as a tourist spot but also as a place of historical importance and the research scholars delving into Goa history, particularly, the Portuguese period, would find it very beneficial to refer this (library's rare book) section."
