COURT OKAYS FIRST AIDS DIVORCE CASE: Marriage to an AIDS patient culminates in a divorce, which has been granted in the court of law for the first time in the history of Goan society. After a suit filed for divorce on the grounds that the male spouse having contracted AIDS and not having confessed the same before marriage, was heard and the reliefs granted by the Bicholim court. The plaintiff was represented by renowned social activist Advocate Shanti Fonseca. (H)

ID-UL-FITR TODAY: Id-Ul-Fitr (Ramzan Id), which marks the end of the 40-day fasting, is being celebrated today in Goa. In Panaji, the committee has arranged the Id namaz at Campal football ground at 9 am. In Betim, the Id prayers will be held at the Masjid at 9.30 am. (GT)

3-YR RI FOR MURDER BID: The district and sessions judge, Mr Nelson Britto, on Thursday convicted and sentenced Francis Pereira of Curchorem, for three years RI and a fine of Rs.5000 for attempting to commit the murder of Mr Antonio Fernandes on October 30, 2000. (NT)

CANCEL ORDER: The Opposition Congress party has demanded that the government rescind the controversial notification slashing down public holidays. Speaking to reporters GPCC executive committee in Panjim, President Ms Nirmala Sawant hinted that she would also meet the Governor Kidarnath Sahani, and inform him about her party-stand on that matter. 52% PASS HSSC: Fifty-two per cent of STD XII students and 36.42 per cent of Std X students managed to clear the October examinations this year. (H)

WAIT FOR THE DENTISTS: While the villagers of Salcette are desperately awaiting for the dentists in the village, Margao, the commercial capital of Goa, has attained saturation with the highest number (62) dental clinics in Goa. NINE TIMES UNLUCKY: Yeshwant Nageshkar of Marcela endured nine trips to the Secretariat in search of self-employment only to be turned down on the last occasion. Yeshwant, who despite suffering a serious vision defect since the age of three, completed his BA from Government College, Khandola. (GT)

FRESH COMPLAINT: In a fresh complaint to the Goa Cricket Association, BJP man and member of the GCA executive committee, Dr Shekhar Salkar, has alleged a Rs.50 lakh scam (approx) in the controversial association's finances. Dr Salkar has accused GCA president Dayanand Narvekar, secretary Vinod Phadke and treasurer Akbar Mulla of "misappropriation" of GCA funds. (H)

ORLIM VILLAGERS yesterday staged a protest march due to the frequent power cuts in the village. They have threatened to hold dharnas and stage morchas if the problem is not attended to immediately. (GT)

PURCHASE OF GRAVES: Purchase of space at St Inez cemetery will no more be a "grave situation" as the Panjim Municipal Council has decided to allow interested parties to purchase graves once again. The matter came up for discussion on an application from the wife of late Erasmo Sequeira, ex-MP of Goa, to purchase a grave at the St Inez cemetery. (H)

KASHMIRI HELD FOR CHARAS: The Anti-Narcotics Cell arrested a Kashmiri for possession of 1.2 kg of charas, valued at Rs.1.2 lakh. Mehraj Abdul Rehman Watto (28) was caught carrying a handbag in his stall selling artifacts, along the Baga-Anjuna belt, by an ANC raiding team. (H)

TAJ EXOTICA WOOS NRI TOURISTS: Mr Helmut-Meckelburg, GM of South Goa-based five-star hotel Taj Exotica feels that the tension at the Indo-Pak border, the riots in Gujarat, the ongoing violence in Jammu and Kashmir, and the recent bomb blast in Mumbai have inevitably cast their shadow over this season's tourist inflow. Talking about his hotel, he said it was "out of red" as they have already cultivated non-resident Indian (NRI) market. "These people come down to Goa to visit their families at least once a year," he stated…Shifting of Dabolim airport to Mopa would be a great mistake, he says. (NT)

JESUITS' SEMINAR AT PORVORIM: As many as 20 eminent scholars from all over the country will participate in a two-day seminar on "In the footsteps of Francis Xavier, Jesuits in India", at the Xavier Centre in Porvorim from December 7, to mark the 450th death anniversary of St Francis Xavier. (H)

BIRTH CENTENARY OF ANGELO DA FONSECA: The Pilar Seminary rounds up its month-long exhibition of the paintings of Angelo da Fonseca with a symposium on "Art and Spirituality" in the Pilar Seminary Chapel on the occasion of the birth centenary of the great Goan. The native of the lovely island of Santo Estevam was born on 6 December, 1902, the last of seventeen children. He ventured into medicine and then into agriculture but finally discovered his true vocationto be an artist. (GT)

REMO FOR NATIONAL GAMES: Pop singer Remo Fernandes has been invited to represent the Western Region of India at the opening ceremony of the 32nd National Games to be held in Hyderabad on 13 December. On this occasion, Remo has composed and produced a special nine-minute folk song medley incorporating music from the states of Goa, Maharashtra and Kerala. (GT)

ART EXHIBITION: Gallery Art Chamber will be playing host to two celebrated Goan artists from today onwards. Francis de Souza and Suhas Shilker will jointly exhibit their works till 26 December. (GT)

PAINTING EXHIBITION: Leader of the Opposition Pratapsing Rane inaugurated an exhibition of paintings organised by Poornima Sinha at the Kala Academy. In all 22 paintings are on display, mostly portraying Goa's natural beauty. The exhibition will be open for public till 8 December from 10 am to 7 pm. (GT)
