GOAN NRI CONVENTION: The State government will make serious effort to
enlist Goan NRIs to collect data for formulation of a policy/Scheme to help
them. For accomplishing the task, the NRI Felicitation Centre has organised
a day-long convention of representatives of various associations of Goans
living abroad on December 29 at the Kala Academy. (NT)
FIRE SPEWS FROM A WELL: A well at Dhaktalem, Mangor Hill, Vasco, caught
fire on December 22 morning after a petroleum product, which is learnt to
have been accumulated with the water in the well, exploded. The police are
yet to identity the product and also the cause of the explosion. (H)
VASCO ENGULFED IN FIRE PHOBIA: Though the fire is believed to have erupted
as a result of the leakage of some petroleum product in a public well at
Dactulem, Vasco, the residents are yet to come to grips with the changed
situation. The fire brigade personnel, assisted by police and Zuari
(factory) officials, were busy removing the petroleum product from the well
on December 23. The residents, who had gathered in large numbers were
looking very tense and frightened. They informed the GT representative that
the authorities have asked them not to light gas stoves until further
instructions. Hence they could not cook food and the same had to be brought
from neighbouring areas. (GT)
SABOTAGE RULED OUT: A day after the incident of fire in a well at Vasco,
the district administration has ruled out any sabotage, and confirmed the
theory of possible leakage of petroleum products. (NT)
CLASH OVER HELMETS AGAIN: An emergency meeting of the Motorcycle Action
Group, held at Panaji on December 22, resolved to strongly oppose fresh
moves by the authorities to make use of helmets mandatory in the state from
1 January 2003. (GT)
GOA DEMANDS REVIEW OF MHADEI WATER: The Goa government is pressing for a
reassessment of water yield of Mhadei river prepared by the Central Water
Commission. The state government put forth its demand to scrap the CWS
water yield, describing it as incorrect, in a meeting, which was convened
among the states of Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka by the Union Water
Resources Ministry in New Delhi on December 20. (NT)
GOANS TO BE HIT BY SC RULING: Goan students are likely to be adversely
affected following an Apex Court ruling which directs the use of the
yardstick of institutional preference over domicile for students seeking
admissions for post graduation medical course. The National Congress Party,
Goa Unit president Dr Wilfred de Souza, said while furnishing details of
the case. (H)
"PRAKASH YATRA" IN ANJUNA: Beginning the year-long celebrations of the
fourth centenary of St Michael's Church in Anjuna, the parishioners took
out a long "Prakash Yatra", a lantern-lit procession, soon after sundown
yesterday evening. The procession, which comprised of a tableau of the
birth of Jesus, had the laity singing praises to the Lord through Christmas
carols, and passed through the main roads of the village. Earlier in the
evening, the spiritual preparations for the centenary celebrations began
with the eucharistic mass at the church, where Goa's Archbishop, Dr Raul
Gonsalves, was the main celebrant. The Archbishop said that the prayer
houses should spread the message of love and peace keeping in view that all
belong to one united family of God and the Church in reality is not one
made of inanimate stones but of living people. (GoaNOW)
HOUSE BURGLED IN ORLIM: Unknown culprits entered an old residential house
of Pagy Viegas and committed theft of gold ornaments and cash totally worth
about Rs.68,000. (GT)
DELIMITATION OF CONSTITUENCIES: A demand for fresh delimitation of Goa
Assembly constituencies has been made with Chief Election Commissioner JM
Lyngdoh by the Goa Forum for Good Governance. Juino de Souza, convenor of
the Forum, has pointed out that there were large-scale discrepancies in the
voter population among the 40 assembly segments and that certain vested
interests were keen to perpetuate the situation. (GT)
LADEN "SCARE" IN GOA: A number of images and speeches of the latest
"badshah-of-terror" Osama Bin laden, downloaded on computers in several
cyber cafes, have had the Goa Police on the run. The police are more
alarmed by the fact that these cyber café's have some students hailing from
Arab countries listed as members on their membership list. (H)
SANCOALE STINKS OF FISH: Residents of Upasnagar, Sancoale, in a
representation addressed to the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has stated
that the owner of M/s Bismilla Fisheries, Vasco, is illegally drying fish
in an open area adjacent to their houses. The trucks while transporting
fish, spill the fish water along the roads, thereby making them slippery. (GT)
KONKANI BOOK: Datta D Naik's Konkani book "Zai Kai Zui" will be released by
former MP Amrut Kansar at the Gomant Vidhya Niketan, Margao, in the
presence of Mukesh Thali, Prashanti Talpankar, and Purnanand Chari, on

GRAPHITE ISSUE: Sea Goa Ltd top officials have dispelled any apprehensions
that graphite released from their industrial plant at Amona has any adverse
effect on the human system. (H)
LOUDSPEAKER USE ALLOWED TILL MIDNIGHT: The state government has decided to
permit use of loudspeakers during Christmas and New Year celebrations till
midnight and to allow bars and restaurants to be open till 2 in the
morning. In view of the Supreme Court order pertaining to noise pollution
the government had restricted use of loudspeakers till 10 in the night. The
state government sought a relief under the recent Central government
notification, wherein states were asked to identity 15 days in a calendar
year for permitting the use of public systems till midnight. (NT)
PM VAJPAYEE IN GOA: The Prime Minister, Mr AB Vajpayee, is expected to
celebrate New Year in Goa along with hordes of dignitaries and
personalities from the glamour industry including Miss India, Shruti

PIEDADE FELICITATED: Piedade Sequeira, wife of late Robert Sequeira of
Calangute, ex-Army man, was felicitated at the hands of Jaishree
Sasidharan, in the presence of Brig MK Sasidharan, Station Commander, at a
function held on the eve of Liberation day at the Army Head Quarters in
