Dear Mr. Albuquerque, That is true. But by Indian standards these salaries are considered reasonable. The others are in Banks, Oil and Chemical followed by Mining ( in the late '90s). And do you know what the majority of the working class get. Per annum 15 days privilege leave accumulable upto 45 days, upto 9 days Sick leave non accumulable and 6 days casual leave non accumulable. There is no guarantee on employment. You are hired or fired depends on the bosses whims and in small shops or industrial estate the definition of "whims and fancies can extend from shopfloor desk or bedrooms" The going salaray per month is Rs 1500 to Rs 3000. No annual increments or pay rise. Bonus if given is a festival gift in cash or kind or never ever. The Holidays are 5 compulsory plus two with pay. The working hours 8.30 to 8 p.m. there is a long siesta for the boss to snooze because in Goa life in these one two employee establishments comes to a standstill from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the staff have to flock around shops, church square alleys gardens until the boss returns. Now the recent trend is employment on contract and there are no statutory benefits. Compared to all this the Govt salaries are lucrative, because there is No Accountability - your salary meter runs. godfrey j. i. gonsalves ________________________________________________________________________ Missed your favourite TV serial last night?
