MAPUSA COUNCIL CHIEF VOTED OUT: The chairperson of the Mapusa Municipal
Council, Mr Michael Carrasco, was on Jan 14 voted out from the post of
chairperson by seven votes to zero, despite him having resigned with
immediate effect on January 13. All the six pro-Carrasco councillors
including Mr Carrasco abstained from the meeting convened to discuss the
no-confidence motion filed against him by the vice-chairperson, Mr Sudhir
Kandolkar and his group of six. The decisive seventh vote was provided by
Mr Prakash Bhivshet, who dramatically resurfaced to ensure the
chairperson's defeat. Present for today's meeting to vote against the
chairperson were Sudhir Kandolkar, Sandeep Falari, Oscar D'Souza, Prabakar
Vernekar, Farida D'Souza, Shubangi Vaigankar and Prakash Bhivshet. The
Mapusa MLA and Law Minister, Mr Francis D'Souza was also present for the

SGPDA MARKET TAPS RUN DRY: With 1,000-odd vendors conducting their
business, of which more than 50 per cent are ladies, the South Goa Planning
and Development Authority (SGPDA) modern market complex is dry, with not a
single drop of water, for the last couple of days. And adding to their cup
of woes was the stand of Sulabh Shauchalay to pull down their shutters for
want of water. The agitated vendors have pulled up their socks to stage
protest, if the authorities fail to restore the water supply. (NT)

COMMISSION TO PROBE CARANZALEM LAND CASE: The advocate general of the
state, Mr ANS Nadkarni, on Tuesday informed the Goa bench of the Bombay
high court that the state government has approached retired chief justice
of Karnataka high court , Mr M L Pendse, for constituting a commission of
inquiry to inquire into the irregularities in conversion of land at
Caranzalem. Mr Nadkarni made the statement during the hearing of the
petition filed by Archdioceses of Goa and Daman through its power of
attorney, Mr Peter Vaz, and others. (NT)
CHRISTIANITY EXISTED IN GOA MUCH BEFORE PORTUGUESE: A priest researcher has
now found that Christianity did exist in Goa, much before the arrival of
the Portuguese. Stating this very emphatically, Fr Eremito Rebello of the
Rachol Seminary offered evidence to drive home his point an issue which is
likely to generate a debate among historians. Fr Rebello made his
presentation on "Christian Presence in Goa and the Diocese of Goa", at the
three-day national seminar on Christianity, a project of History of Indian
Science, Philosophy and Culture, New Delhi, organised at the International
Centre, on Tuesday. (H)
KTC TO HIKE FARES: The Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTC) is
proposing to increase its bus fares by 5 paise per kilometer from February
1 in view of the latest hike in the price of diesel. Private bus operators
have also sought a hike in their fares. According to KTC officials, the
corporation incurs an additional financial burden to the tune of Rs 27,000
per day after the latest rise in diesel prices implemented last month and
an additional Rs 1.1 crore due to constant hikes in price of diesel since
July last year. As per the revised bus fares, the corporation is proposing
to increase the rate from Rs 3 to Rs 4 for the first four kilometers, and
from 30 paise to 35 paise for every subsequent kilometer. (H)
POWER FAILURE TRAPS ELDERLY PRIESTS IN A LIFT: A power failure early
Tuesday morning gave some anxious moments for the inmates of the Margao
Clergy Home as four elderly priests were trapped inside the lift in the
premises. The ordeal ended an hour-and-a-half later after the fire services
were summoned to open the door. The foursome Fr Estincello Souza, Fr
Emintario Mascarenhas, Fr Jose Arpoleto Pereira and Fr Minguel Braganza
Godinho boarded the lift on the second floor of the clergy home to come
downstairs on the ground to participate in the 7 am Morning Mass. As usual,
the lift was to halt on the first floor to collect other priests, but it
got stuck on the second floor itself. The reason was one of the three
electrical phases suddenly snapped, rendering the lift unoperative. (H)
BOY CRUSHED TO DEATH: An 8-year-old boy, Girish Hirappa Lamani, died on the
spot when a bus knocked him down at Loutolim market yesterday evening. (GT)
INTER-RELIGIOUS MEET: An inter-religious prayer meeting held at Cuncolim
recently called for unity, peace and brotherhood amongst the people of
different faiths in this multi-religious country. This prayer meeting
centered around the theme "One God, One People, One World, United Let Us
Build a New Community". Organised by the Parish Pastoral Council of Our
Lady of Health Church, Cuncolim, the religious leaders underlined the need
for harmonious relationship amongst various communities, irrespective of
caste and creed. The meeting was attended by the Cuncolim Parish Priest, Fr
Antonio Cota, Muslim Imam Haji Maulana and Hindu priest Shivdekar. (H)
DY SARPANCH HELD: Ambelim deputy Sarpanch Michael Rodrigues has been
arrested by Cuncolim police under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code.
According to police, Succorine Fernandes, Roque D'Souza and Jonathan Dias
had recent filed a complaint against the accused, who allegedly coerced
them into parting with cash amounting to Rs.55,000 on the promise that he
would provide them with a job. (GT)
NEWLY-BORN BABY ABANDONED: A newly born baby was abandoned in the Goa
Medical College Hospital, Bambolim, by her mother on the bed after 4 days
of her birth on January 8. (NT)
KTC TICKET BOOKS ROBBED: Some unknown culprits robbed Kadamba service
ticket books amounting to Rs.10,000 from the Vasco ticket booth near the
Vasco Fish market on January 13. (NT)
PLEA AGAINST COP TURNS COSTLY: Within a week after chief minister Manohar
Parrikar asked Superintendent of Police (North) to enquiry into shoddy
investigation by a police sub inspector attached to the Panjim town police
station, the petitionera youth from Mala, Panjimwas dragged from his house,
by a police constable, eaten, verbally abused in front of his parents and
neighbours and bundled to the police station. (H)
ERRATIC POWER IN PALOLEM: Residents of Palolem and the surrounding areas
have complained of erratic power supply in their surroundings for over a
period of 2 months now. (H)
SHIRODA LACKS PANCHAYAT OFFICIAL: Shiroda panchayat is in an urgent need of
a full time panchayat official for its office. The current person holds an
additional charge of panchayats at Kavle and Bandora and as such he is
unable to devote much time to Shiroda. (GT)
ONLINE ADMISSION LIKELY: The vice chancellor of Goa University, Prof PS
Zacarias, announced that the Goa University would prefer to have an on-line
admission procedure from the next academic year. (NT)
MARATHI LOVERS DEFEND DIRECTOR: Countering the action of Goa Hitrakhan
Manch, Marathi writers and activists on Tuesday defended the station
director of Goa Doordarshan Barve for telecasting the Al India Marathi
Sammelan on Goa DD network on January 10. (H)
FERRY SERVICE DISCONTINUED: The general public are informed that the ferry
services on the Siolim-Chopdem route stands discontinued with effect from
January 15, 2003, as per Government orders. (H)
ELECTED: The general body meeting of the Sirge Tenants' Association,
Curtorim, has elected Caetano Francisco Rodrigues as the new chairman of
managing committee.
Other members are vice-chairman Joaquim Fernandes, secretary Arnaldo
D'Costa, treasurer Miguel Pereira and attorney Daniel Rodrigues. The
Sirge Tenants' Association was in the news recently after allegations were
made against a managing committee member of misappropriation of funds. (H)

Goan Folk Music Festival of competitive nature at various places of Goa

USAPKAR'S PAINTINGS: An exhibition of the paintings and drawings by
well-known painter from Mapusa, Rajendra Usapkar, "The Sound of the Waves"
will be inaugurated at the Gallery Art Chamber in Calangute on January 17
at 7.00 pm.
