GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS

PMC HIRES RAG PICKERS: The Panjim Municipal Council has enlisted the help
of city-based rag pickers to clear unwanted plastic waste in return for
monetary rewards and the effort received an overwhelming response with a
total of 95 kilos of plastic being deposited at a single collection counter
on January 21. According to Chief Officer Sanjit Rodrigues, the PMC will
pay Rs.0.25 for 1.5 litre bottles and Rs.0.15 for smaller containers. On a
larger scale the council will pay Rs.6 for every kilo of plastic deposited
at its counters, which will be equipped with compact presses which will
flatten the bottles which will then be shipped to the GSSIA Unit at
Sancoale for recycling. (GT)

motor boats scare away the fish and thereby deprive them of their
livelihood. (NT)
"BELIEVERS" FORCED TO LEAVE MANDREM: A group of 14 young people, who called
themselves Believers and wanted to propagate their cult among the local
folk of Mandrem, had to face the wrath of the local people, who asked for

CHEAP LAND DEALS: The next time you come across a sale deed executed in the
Salcete Sub Registrar's office, do not even imagine that land in urbanized,
rural and the coastal areas of Salcete is available at throw away prices.
For, it is only the office of the registrar, which offers false hope for
cheap land when in reality a square meter of land is quoted in thousands, a
fact pointing to the gross under-valuation of land, causing loss to the
State exchequer. (H)

ore exporter Anil Salgaocar has accused the Parrikar government of pursing

Panaji municipal marked yesterday morning. (GT)
NOT WITH HELMETS ALONE: "Helmets are meant to protect the rider when he is
thrown off his two-wheeler; but why should he be thrown off in the first
place? The Goa police have been shirking their responsibility in enforcing
traffic sense among motorcyclists and scooterists. All they have been doing
is checking their licence somewhere along the main road and imposing fines
on or taking bribes from them." (Edit in NT)

Max Temp: 32.5 deg C, Humidity: 63.0% (Official figures for yesterday)
Weather: Is it so terribly cold out there? The several comments from
Goanetters to my remark on weather yesterday, nearly froze me. I had to
look away, and out of my window, and watch the early morning golden glow of
our Goan sunshine. Such lovely weather…here…in Goa this morning.
