GOA TABLEAU IS BEST: Goa tableau, presented at the Republic Day Parade in
New Delhi, depicting harmonious Goan life style by the sea, was adjudged
the best. In all 30 states participated in the parade. Presented by the
department of Information and Publicity, the tableau was designed by well
known Goan artiste, Mr Shushant alias Raja Khedekar. (NT)
FONTAINHAS FESTIVAL IN FULL SWING: It is a totally amazing experience for
the residents of the famed Latin Quarter of Panjim as well as to the
visitors, who are pouring in to witness the fascinating events at the
ongoing, unique Fontainhas Festival of Arts, organised by the Goa Heritage
Action Group in association with the Government of Goa and the Panjim
Municipal Council. For the artists, probably there has been nothing like
this ever before in Goa, as they get their creative work admired and bought
by visitors. Moreover, they get the chance to meet and interact with other
members of their fraternity, not only local but from elsewhere in the
country and the world. There are nearly 34 artists, who have exhibited
their paintings, crafts, art installations, toys, puppets, photographs,
etc, in nearly 18 heritage homes, which have been exposed to the public for
the very first time. The latest gallery to be added is Costa's beautiful
"Velha Goa Galeria", near the Panjim Inn. (See picture at:

YOUTH COMMITS SUICIDE: Suhas Koni Naik (25) from Amona committed suicide by
hanging himself to a cashew tree. The reason behind the suicide was not
known. (NT)
MARGAO WATER PROBLEM: A permanent solution is being worked out by the
Public Works Department, water division, by constructing feeder tanks in
the city to solve the water scarcity here. A massive water tank of 4,000
cubic litres will be constructed on Monte hill to supply uninterrupted
water to the market area for a minimum of eight hours. (GT)
PARSEKAR CONDEMNS MARATHI "LOVERS": While attempting to stay clear from the
sensitive and contentious language issue, BJP President and Mandrem MLA
Laxmikant Parsekar on January 28, flayed those needlessly raising the issue
of Marathi language in the state. In a disguised attack on arch rival
Ramakant Khalap and other Marathi protagonists, Parsekar said, "Some people
have unnecessarily raised the issue of Marathi language only for
self-interest." (H)
KTC DRIVER ASSAULTED: The Verna police on Tuesday registered an offence
against two youths--Elwis and Eliterio--in connection with a case of
assault for assaulting a Kadamba Transport Corporation driver. (NT)
TUEM SARPANCH, DY VOTED OUT: Tuem Sarpanch Vishnu Kerikar and deputy
Sarpanch Chhaya Salgaokar were voted out of office in a no-confidence
motion on Monday. (GT)
SKY-BUS LABORATORY: The Konkan Railway Corporation will set up its
prestigious "Sky-bus Laboratory" in Margao, which will carry out the
design, testing and other modalities before the concept is implemented in
Goa. The proposal has already received a nod from the Union Science and
Technology Department. An amount of Rs.60 crore has been sanctioned for the
laboratory, informed Urban Development Minister, Digambar Kamat on January

BHIVSHET IS VICE CHAIRPERSON: Prakash Bhivshet was elected unopposed
vice-chairperson of the Mapusa municipal council, at a special meeting held
in Mapusa on January 28. (GT)
FOREST DEPT PREFERS TIGERS FOR BONDLA: The Department of Forests, Wildlife
Division, has virtually decided to drop the idea of procuring lions for its
zoo at Bondla and opt for tigers instead. According to the official
sources, the department has been advised by experts to refrain from
procuring lions as it is opined that the climatic conditions in the state
do not provide a conducive environment for them. (H)
PAKUL'S CASE REVERTED: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay high Court has
reverted the case of Francisco Gonsalves (Pakul) of Goa Velha, accused of
burying one Menino Paulo alive in s at the time of the incident. According
to the prosecution, On January 13, 1999, the accused assaulted the deceased
with a spade, dragged him to a nearby field, and then buried him alive. (H)
AITUC'S GOA YATRA: The All India Trade Union Congress will organise a Goa
Yatra shortly to focus on the problems faced by people at the grassroots
level in Goa. The AITUC Goa General Secretary Christopher Fonseca stated
that the aim of the yatra is to hold interaction with common people, visit
villages and understand their problems. (GT)
PIPELINE BURSTS AT VERNA: Water supply will be restricted to Vasco,
including defence establishment and MPT, Verna Industrial Estate and
Loutulim, as the pipeline supplying water to these places burst at Verna on
January 28. (H)
NANORA IDOLS AT STATE MUSEUM: Six idols of religio-historical significance
and belonging to the Shanta Durga temple, Nanora, will shortly find a place
at the State museum. The idols, which are around 400 years old, had been a
part and parcel of the temple since its inception. The temple authorities
decided to replace the idols as the same have been wearing out. (H)
SALINE WATER PANEL: Even as the Tenants Associations along the
Loutulim-Raia-Rachol belt in Salcete have once again moved the authorities
seeking permission for introduction of saline water in khazan lands, the
agriculture Minister, Dayanand Mandrekar, has said that he was not aware of
the existence of any committee empowered to permit the saline waters in. (H)
VELIP LIKELY TO BE GSCB CHAIRMAN: Former Co-operation Minister, Prakash
Velip, is likely to be the chairman of the Goa state co-operative Bank, the
apex financial institution in the State's co-operative sector. (H)
MARTYRS DAY: The Freedom Fighters Association of Goa will be celebrating
"Martyrs Day" on January 30, across the State. MARG has decided to observe
this day as "Consolation Day" for the cause of accident deaths on roads at
Azad Maidan, Panaji. (NT)
SEA VESSELS OPERATING WITHOUT LICENCE: Crafts, boats, vessels such as open
canoes, speed boats, water scooters and other vessels that do not hold
valid licence and are operating with passengers tourists in navigational
channels and inland waterways of Goa and area not permitted for such
activities, will now be booked. (H)
GOAN CONTINGENT FELICITATED: Youth Affairs Minister, Mickky Pacheco,
felicitated the 40-member State Youth contingent which represented at the
Goa at the recently concluded National Youth Festival at
Thiruvannthapuram-Kerala, for excelling at the youth fest. (H)
KONKANI CASSETTE: Xavier Vaz, president of Wilred Leisure Sports Club,
released recently "Udentichem Goem", a Konkani cassette by Bab Joao de Zuari.
