It may be recalled that this is the first Latin rite Catholic Church built in India in 1506 by the Portuguese 158 years before the Taj Mahal was built and before St Francis Xavier was born. In October 1961 the Portuguese fired on the passenger vessel ss. Sabarmati from this Island and this triggered the Liberation of Goa by the Indian armed forces. Anjediv Island was liberated by Indian armed forces from Portuguese domain and taken over only on 22.12.1961, three days after Goa was liberated. Interestingly the Portuguese were not aware that Goa was already liberated on 19 December,1961 and they killed seven Indian armed personnel. There is a memoria! l atop the hill the highest point on the Island in memory of the marty -------------------------------------------------------
