FEAST of  OUR LADY OF SPRINGS- "Igreja de Senhora da Brotas -Anjediv
 Islands" Binaga, Karwar
 India.--------------------------------------------------- 

The Feast of Our Lady of Springs, "Nossa Senhora da Brotas" will be 
celebrated on Sunday, 2nd February, 2003 at Anjediv Island off Karwar 
Port India. There will be a concelebrated High Mass, at the Church, at 
11.a.m. A part of the roof has collapsed and is partly open. There are no 
benches and devotees have to either stand or squat on the floor. 

The Main celebrant will be Fr. Alexio, and other priests,include Fr. 
Britto D Silva, Parish Priest of Our Lady of St Anne's Church, Binaga 
(presently overseeing the affairs of this Church},and Fr. Kurien Therady, 
(who was the driving force to ensure the celebration of the feast with 
great enthusiasm since 1984 till 1993). The devotees from Goa will have 
to proceed by KTC or KSRTC, buses going to Karwar or Mangalore. 

>From Karwar, main bus-stand,they can get into shared autorickshaws! , the 
fare is Rs.15/- to Karwar P i.e before 4.00 p.m. Devotees will make the 
visit at their own risk and the organisors of the Feast take no 
responsibility for any untoward incident in transit. The organisors 
extend their warm invitation to all faithful irrespective of caste, creed 
or religion,to participate in the Feast Mass. 

It may be recalled that this is the first Latin rite Catholic Church 
built in India in 1506 by the Portuguese 158 years before the Taj Mahal 
was built and before St Francis Xavier was born. In October 1961 the 
Portuguese fired on the passenger vessel ss. Sabarmati from this Island 
and this triggered the Liberation of Goa by the Indian armed forces. 
Anjediv Island was liberated by Indian armed forces from Portuguese 
domain and taken over only on 22.12.1961, three days after Goa was 
liberated. Interestingly the Portuguese were not aware that Goa was 
already liberated on 19 December,1961 and they killed seven Indian armed
