KONKANI "MOGIS" LAMBAST GOVT'S TENDENCY: Government's reported move to
grant Rs.10 lakh for the Konkan Marathi Sammelan yesterday drew sharp
reactions from institutions promoting the cause of Konkani language in the
State. The Konkani Bhasha Mandal and Asmitai Pratisthan while strongly
deploring the action of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to okay the grant,
has exhorted all political parties and social organisation in Goa to compel
the government to stop such waste of Goan public funds. "No government of
Goa has the right to waste Goan taxpayers' money on non-Goans' activities,"
they said. (H)

CALL FOR TOUGH METHODS: Reviewing methods of issuing licenses, creating
pathways for pedestrians along the main roads, notifying Zebra crossings
and strict implementation of motor vehicular act were some of the
suggestions made to reduce accidents, at the Consolation Day organised by
the Movement of Amity Towards Roads at Azad Maidan to remember those who
have died in road accidents in Goa. A panel of mothers, which included
Ujwala Tarcar, Patricia Pinto, Vrunda Kantak, Norma Alvares, Victoria
Fernandes, Subhalaxmi Raikar and Auda Viegas, narrated their experiences
with accident victims and called for mass awareness about the causes of

FONTAINHAS FESTIVAL: Paintings, sculpture, pottery, food, performances,
puppets, handicrafts, photographs…all the important ingredients that go
into making any art festival a resounding success, have been integrated in
the ongoing Fontainhas Festival of the Arts in Panjim. Today's live
performance begin at 7.00 pm with Baban Marathe's Gazals, at 7.30 pm
Kamleshwar Saksriti Mandal "Lokwadacho Mall", 7.50 pm Chote Rehmat Khan and

DECKED UP FOR KONKAN MARATHI SAMMELAN: Darya Sangam at Kala Academy, the
venue for the eighth Konkan Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, bustled with
activities to give final touches to the Sammelan which begins today
(January 31) evening. The organisers expect more than 5000 people from
Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa to attend this three-day literary meet. (H)
KULAGARS ARE MAN-MADE WONDERS: If kulagars are being tapped for
eco-tourism, it comes as no surprise. The idyllic and harmonious spots with
"green architecture" existed, almost unsung, for generations. Shaped and
nursed into eco-friendly units with bare hands but by fertile brains, these

FRAMING CHARGES AGAINST PI GAONKAR STAYED: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay
High Court has granted a temporary stay on the framing of charges against
Mahesh Gaonkar, Panjim Police Inspector, for offences punishable under
Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes ACT 1989, based on a complaint filed by
D Kenaudekar, a former deputy collector, and his brother saying that they
were "low and schedule caste chambar". (H)
FIRST PARISH CHURCH OF SANCOALE: On February 2, 2003, the annual feast of
Our Lady of Health is celebrated at Sarfondd in Sancoale, where the façade
or frontispiece of the old church of Sancoale can been seven even from the
Agassaim-Cortalim bridge. A few years back a small chapel was built behind
the frontispiece. The first parish church of Sancoale was erected by D

SCAM ROCKS CARPENTER'S ASSOCIATION: The Goa Carpenters' Association,
Benaulim, has decided to seek the legal opinion to proceed in the alleged
misappropriation of funds amounting Rs.1.5 lakh during the previous

MISSING: One Shanti Rodlino, resident of Carmona, went missing since
January 27. (H) Similarly Ms Shamsun Bi Shaikh has been missing from Valpoi
since 29 Jan.
KONKANI-ENGLISH DICTIONARY: A new combined edition of Konkani-English
illustrated dictionary published by Rajhauns Vitaran will be released
shortly. The new edition will be advantageous to the students for its
economy size which will cost Rs.95. (H)
STINK 'BOMB' AT VASCO COP STATION: The woes of the inmates as well as the
public visiting the Vasco Police Station premises seem to be compounded
since the last four days as the foul smell emanating from the overflowing
toilet in the lock-up is simply unbearable. (GT)
TRAVEL WEBSITE IS THE BEST: www.hellotraveltalk.com, a Goan website is the
number one Indian travel and tourism portal, according to statistics
released by Amsterdam-based Nedstat, which found that this website scored
more than 600 'hits' since 6 January. While most of the visitors to the
portal were Indian, the remainder consisted of Americans, Arabs from the
UAE and Saudi Arabia and Europeans from the UK, Germany, Holland and other

WOMAN BOOKED FOR CHEATING: Sharmila Patwardan from Mumbai brought 163
tourists to Goa, enjoyed Goan hospitality for 7 days, at the end of it
tried to leave without paying her bills amounting to Rs.70,000 and ended in
police custody. (GT)
FOREIGNERS RESIDING IN GOA: Presently, the total number of foreigners
residing in Goa, officially, is 2864. According to the police, 1471 are
males, 1289 are females and the remaining are children. They are spread
over different talukas mostly along the coastal belt. (H)
WILL NRI'S ACCEPT? "If Victor Menezes, with whom the Chief Minister,
Manohar Parrikar, is reported to have had very fruitful discussions, were
to arrive in Goa tomorrow and got to the Chief Minister's official
residence the probability is that he will not be able to meet the Chief
Minister at all. The experience of those, who have taken the Chief Minister
at his word and have dropped in to see him, has been horrendous. This is
because the office of the Chief Executive of Goa is badly organised and the

GOA, UK LINKS GO BACK LONGER: Goan migration to Britain could well go back
centuries earlier than previously thought, and a number of British ships
called on Goa from round 1635 and earlier, says a London-based history
researcher, who's digging deep across oceans of records to navigate to the
truth. Cliff Pereira (42) from Wellington in London has been working on
meticulously maintained British maritime records, found that from 1635 to
1639 eight British ships visited Goa, between 1700 and 1784 around 61 East
India Company ships are known to have called at Goa. (Frederick Noronha in

TALK ON JOURNALISM: Peaceful Society has organised a programme in
association with Goa Union of Journalists in which Sunderlal Bahuguna,
noted environmentalist, will be delivering a lecture for the press and

YOUNGEST ZP MEMBER: Any Colaco, 23, is not only a young vibrant girl but
also the youngest elected member for the first Zilla Panchayat in Goa. A
resident of Nuvem, Colaco belongs to Other Backward Classes community and
