CM PROMISES AID FOR MARATHI ND KONKANI: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on January 31 stated that it would require at least five years in a suitable political atmosphere to resolve the language imbroglio in the state and appealed to the people to preserve the rich culture instead of engaging in controversy. He also assured the gathering, at the inaugural function of the 3-day Eight Konkan Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in Panaji, that the government would grant all possible financial assistance to promote both Konkani and Marathi literature in the State. FONTAINHAS FESTIVAL: As the week-long Fontainhas Festival draws to a close, it is becoming increasingly interesting for the visiting public as well as the participants. Today, the penultimate day, will witness one of the most important performances involving Remo and his famed "The Microwave Papadums" band at 8.30 pm. Pratap Amonkar with Rajani Thakur and Vishnu's Orchestra (Konkani Pop) and Teja Amonkar (Hindi Pomp) will kick off the programme at 7.00 pm, while the band Forefront will take over the proceedings at 9.30 pm.

PARRIKAR TO VISIT SALCETE: For the second time, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will be visiting Salcete, the Congress' traditional bastion and home of many a Congress heavyweights, with his "ganv chalo abhiyan" programme. If it was Velim first, where the CM launched the party programme a month ago, Saturday will see Parrikar touring Navelim constituency, the stronghold of senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister, Luizinho Faleiro. STUDENTS FALL SICK AFTER CONSUMING FOOD PACKETS: A large number of students from different primary schools in Sattari taluka fell ill after consuming the food packets supplied to them under the State government mid-day meal scheme. Nearly 10 students had to undergo treatment at a private hospital and were discharged later. The food packers are being supplied to 105 primary schools in the taluka, having a strength of little over 3000 students. (NT)

TENANT CAN'T CHANGE: The Supreme Court has ruled that a tenant of a residential or business premises can be evicted if he changes the nature of tenancy without the written consent of the landlord. Setting aside an Allahabad High Court order, a division bench comprising Chief Justice of India Justice VN Khare and Justice Ashok Bhan said: where the premises were put to a use for a purpose other than for which it was let out, then written consent of the landlord was a must. CRUDE BOMB IN VASCO: A crude bomb, presumably of Portuguese era, about 1000 pounds (250 kg) in weight and 1.3 metre long, was recovered by the police at Shantinagar, Vasco, on January 31. The bomb was found at the site of the four-lane highway under construction by the Border Road Organisation. (GT)

PROTECT NATURE: "Save Mother Earth for a peaceful and healthy life." These are the words of renowned environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna in his clarion call to the people of Goa while addressing a gathering on January 31 at the Institute Menezes Braganza Hall. Mr Bahuguna was sharing his experiences on his pilgrimage of protecting the environment and particularly the Himalayas and the headwaters of the river Ganges which has been threatened by the construction of the massive Tehri Dam. SOCORRO TUNNEL CROSSING, A NIGHTMARE: For the villagers of Socorro, Bardez, bobd", an open tunnel, has been the main artery and the shortest access road. Since the time it was taken up for "repairs" nearly a year ago, the "bobd" has become one of the main issues affecting the villagers. It has become highly risky and volatile to use the tunnel as the last monsoon saw several landslides following which the road had to be closed for vehicular traffic as well as for pedestrians. (H)

PMC, KHANDEPAR HEADING FOR SHOWDOWN: A confrontation between two elected bodies is on the cards, following the decision by the Ponda Municipal Council to prohibit the Khandepar panchayat from dumping garbage at a plot owned by the PMC in Keriya-Khandepar. (H)

SACORDEM, A HAVEN FOR POACHERS: The Mahavir wildlife sanctuary of Sacordem village in Sanguem taluka has become a haven for poachers. Their favourite target is wild board. SECTION 144: The District Magistrate, North Goa, Panaji, has prohibited the assembly or collection of five or more persons carrying fire-arms or weapons of offence such as lathis, swords, daggers or spears, the use of loudspeakers and the shouting of slogans in any public place, street, road, square, thoroughfare, by-lane or any other open space within 1 km around the new assembly complex at Porvorim. ISRAELI SENTENCED: An Israeli national Yaniv Cohen, who was arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Cell in March 2001 at an Anjuna guesthouse, was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment. Ectasy tablets worth more than Rs.5.5 lakh were seized from him. (GT)
